Hey all I'm loving the Ti so far but I've noticed more coil whine than usual whilst folding? I know all high-performance cards exhibit whine whether or not our ears can hear it. But it seems like I have a unit that has more whine than I'm used to, or noticed with my regular 1080, Titan (GK110), or 680 under the same loads. My usual "burn in" for GPU consists of benchmarking and folding for a week to check for instability etc and with the Ti I can hear the whine above the fan on 70% and all of my case fan and room fan as well. For gaming its fine and only heard on the occasional non FPS limited loading screen, but as an occasional folder that has his machine within ear shot I just wanted to know for reference if anyone else experiences this.

Ok so it just seems the power delivery is cranked up and these Ti's are just vocal about their work, nothing to worry about just seems to be characteristic of the series.

Wait, are you all saying coil whine is common on the ti? I have not experienced it on my 1080 ftw and ftw2. Should I expect it on the 1080 ti? Is it more common on reference boards? is that it? Edit: Ignore me. I've had good luck with gpus so far. Plus I can just return it if its too crazy.

That and the power supply can play a big role in components coil whine.
Some cards do have inherent coil while, others have it induced by a low power, old, and/or cheap power supply that has bad/worsening DC ripple supression.

I can sometimes hear it in my headset. Clearly it interferes with the audio components on the MB. Can sometimes hear it with fans low too but I have a Carbide 400Q case and it's pretty quiet.

Could be your Corsair HX850W PSU. No, but then I have Old Ears. I have never had a Graphics Card with Coil Whine. Well at least the last 22 Cards from the GTX 660Ti through the GTX 1080Ti All EVGA Cards.

I've noticed it changes depending on the WU since the GPU is constantly at ~1840 Ghz full boost and it seems to have gotten less noticeable since I posted about it. The powerdraw at full load sans monitor is only 460ish watts so I shouldnt be working the PSU hard either. I may try another PSU in my older PC but its a corsair 750w so probably not much difference there. This is the first GPU I've had more than ambient coil noise but its only whilst folding so not a big deal and nothing I would RMA over

Can coil whine have different sounds,as the load changes or a hardware change such as a different PSU?

Easiest way for me to discern the noise is to make a change in precisionX, when you click "apply" the whine stops for a split second while the settings are updated on the card.

Scarlet-Tech Mine sounds like a very quiet taser going off in the other room, and it is right next to me, lol. It is very faint, but noticeable.
So you guys are just going to keep your cards? I just got my 3rd 1080ti kingpin, and it has coil whine also. First one had terrible whine, rma, 2nd one coil whine and 2/3 display ports didnt work, now this 3rd card has coil whine also.. Since the first card I upgraded my corsair rm850 psu to a evga 1000w t2, so i dont know if i can get a better psu.. Most annoying thing is, before getting a kingpin card, I had my hands on a zotac amp extreme, asus strix, evga sc and evga ftw3, none of which had any coil whine, even with my older corsair psu.. Kinda disappointed my card whines, I paid a premium for the kingpin card, thinking it will be built with the highest quality components, and it whines.. I can hear it while in my sound isolation case under my desk, pretty annoying.. Im really concerned, since the new case im building wont be sound isolated, so it will be more noticeable.

In rare cases the motherboard can cause the GPU to whine as well. But in your case I'm thinking it might be the GPU as other GPUs have been fine. I'm on my 3rd card with coil whine and 2nd PSU. So next thing I'm changing out is the motherboard. Coil whine is beyond annoying, I'm so over it. GL

I think statistics show that most 1080ti's will have some coil whine, and I legitimately believe that anybody claiming they don't have any just can't hear it for any number of reasons.

If it was so quiet that I couldn't hear it I wouldn't care but when you can hear it through fans and even game volume coming through desktop speakers then that's way too much, at least for me.

I had two 1080FTWs, the original 1080FTW and the stepped up 1080FTW2 iCX - both had coil whine. Luckily the step-up 1080ti SC Black has no coil whine at 100% load.

Wow, that's a pretty high rate for it. Glad you got one without it in the end though. If after changing my PSU and mobo it still turns out to be the card, I'm just going to continually RMA it. The amount of time, money and stress this is causing me...
