Hello all.
Been awhile since I was building any systems... a looong while. I have been pricing out a system to see if I can stretch the cash, as I am currently on a MSI GT80 Titan from their first release a few years ago. While it's a great laptop, my only desktop is the one I built years ago when the GTX400 series was new.
I was looking at specs and memory support recently to compare boards, and noticed a few things that I am unsure about. When I was looking at the list of memory support, it only shows 16gb total support for Corsair Dominator Platinum 3200Mhz, while G.Skill memory is listed as supported at higher than 16gb at 3200 and as the only brand on the list that goes up to (not above) 3600. Is this accurate? Also it appears that with the size of 1080's that the two cards in an SLI set-up would be directly next to each other with one fan trying to blow directly on the back of the other card, given what I've gathered from the specs on which slots are x16/x8. Does this pose an issue with heat on traditional fan cooled GPU's, and is this fairly standard now across the industry? I seem to remember being able to spread out the GPU's at least a slot before in SLI set-ups to provide better airflow.
Right now I am looking at doing roughly this set-up:
Intel i7-7700k 4.2
Corsair H60
EVGA Z270 Classified K
32GB Corsair Dominator Platinum DDR4 3200Mhz
2x EVGA GTX 1080 TI
Samsung 960 EVO m.2 SSD 1TB
WD Black 2TB HDD
Creative Labs Sound Blaster Zx 24-bit 192 KHz Sound Card
Corsair HX1000i Power Supply
LG Blu-Ray Writer
LG 27UD68-P 27.0" 3840x2160 60Hz Monitor
Corsair K70 RGB Rapidfire Keyboard
Corsair Scimitar Mouse
Astro A50 Headset
I am really unsure of a case yet, but I'd be getting a Full Tower to make sure there is little chance of issues with any of the components. (On that note, I'm planning on going with some black/chrome look inside the case where possible with blue lighting where possible on fans and whatnot, and a white/blue case. If any of you know of a great looking case with hidden drive bay fronts and windowed opening/fans to the left side if you are looking at the front, that fits the bill, I'd more than appreciate the nod in the right direction.)
If there are any glaring issues anyone notices with compatibility or shared slots that would be an issue, or any major problems with a particular component, please feel free to let me know. This obviously will cost a good amount, and I'd rather not overlook anything. Only problem I had with my last desktop build was that the EVGA board would get to a certain spot in the boot process and "double boot" (get to that point and restart before even booting fully), but that was minor.
Thanks all.
