Just a quick update - Still waiting for delivery of Steve's contribution to the effort. I'm so very thankful for you all because I was running numbers and realizing that even a barebones replacement that I wanted to do with a pseudo upgrade to Ryzen would have been just under $1000 that I just can't afford at the moment.  The curse of busted hardware, for me, means I go window shopping, a lot. *laughs*

So, thank you all, once again, and I'll update you as soon as the situation changes.

I've gotten several PMs asking me what can be done to help get my system standing back up and at the moment it's just a waiting game as HK-Steve's contribution is on it's way.

However, I will say that if you do want to help towards a major upgrade that I want to do, PM me again and I can give you my paypal for donations.  I've decided to build a Ryzen system but really can't justify the cost fully to myself.  But, it's my birthday soon, and I'm currently down a box, so justifications kind of fly out the window.

So, if you've got a few bucks and want to help me defray costs of the new system while we try to stand the old one up long enough for me to back up data and document how my system was put together, please let me know.

I have been informed via text message that the motherboard has indeed arrived! Pending my free time in the next day or two, I hope to have good news by Sunday!

If it turns out you need a new CPU as well (and are still running AM3) I have a X6 1090T Black Edition I'm not using.  Just hit me up.

After a morning of work, I'm down two 4 tb drives and limping the box along.

That's better than I had feared.

My DEEPEST thanks to HK-Steve and notfordman for stepping in and helping a pimp out.

Now, to figure out how to get these drives replaced and then move forward with my upgrade plans. Friggin lack of money . . .

::edit:: Might I add that it feels SOOO much better to see the stats coming in and being backed up on the PROPER system?

Re: Pimp Down! 2017/04/13 05:22:23 (permalink)
At the end of this all, I'm now down a total of 2TB of storage overall, but that is GREATLY preferable and tolerable over the entire system being DOWN and unusable, and mflanaga has graciously helped to make sure that my backup system will have plenty of space for me to use it as the complete backup if this should ever happen again!

Everyone who reached out to me, regardless if I needed to accept or not, you are all rock stars in the folding world. your willingness to sacrifice to help another out like that speaks volumes for your character, so I'm applauding all of you.

I doubt  that I will ever be able to thank any of you enough, but I will keep trying.

Glad you are back up and running, hope my MB, CPU and ram worked for you...

So what was the original failure that started all this mess????

Re: Pimp Down! 2017/04/13 12:05:20 (permalink)
The nearest I can tell is the old PSU just simply gave up, but instead of doing so in a graceful and easy to recover from way, it burped just a little extra voltage into the mobo and those two drives . . . I haven't taken the deep tour of all the caps on the mobo, but once I got in close, I could easily smell that fun ozone smell.  It was an at least 7 year old PSU, and I'm much ashamed to say, a semi generic that was pulled from a third party build because it was currently WORKING at the time, so that was ultimately shame on me for not replacing it.

The most likely culprit is dirty power due to brownout, but thanks to my wife's creative work, we also have a new UPS in line to smooth the power feed to the system as well as blocking any surges, which is the best we can do without a major overhaul to get a power conditioning system put on the house mains.
