I'm currently playing the games I like on my 1080p using my 780 Ti and it works fine for me, but I know it's time to upgrade. This summer I'm going to build a new system, including a new monitor, and was wondering about which new GPU I should get.

I'm not ready to jump into 4K yet, so I have my eye on something like a 34", Ultra-Wide, 1440p, IPS type of panel with a high refresh rate.

The two cards I'm thinking about are the EVGA GTX 1070 FTW2 Gaming iCX RGB ($470.00) and the EVGA GTX 1080 FTW2 Gaming iCX RGB ($590.00). [I'm going to do a RGB build and both EVGA cards meet the bill].

I really like the idea of low power consumption, but then again, I also like planning for the future. Any and all thoughts welcomed.

I'm sure will see GTX 1080Ti FTW2 Classified kingpin v2 black edition by this summer. I would go for it over a regular GTX1080.

I would do some research on what games support ultra-wide monitors and the pros an cons.

If you are looking at an Ultra Wide 1440p, you would likely want to run a 1080 rather than a 1070, we find that 1070 is a great card for 1440p 16x9, but once you go to Ultra-wide 1440p, especially at high refresh rate you would likely like the higher performance of a 1080

Thanks. I've been checking out some games I bought but have yet to play. I've been busy closing our family estate and moving out of the old house. When I'm moved into my new apartment, and things are settled, I'm going to be building my new system. The two games I'm waiting to play are Doom and Mankind Divided which both offer ultrawide support. One interesting thing I learned is that Half-Life 2 also offers ultrawide support, imagine that...one of my favorite games...can't wait to play it again on my new rig.

It does look like a 1070 will run a 1440p ultrawide although it will require in-game tweaks to hit that 60fps avg. mark. With the 1080 only costing $120 more than the 1070 it's kind of a no brainer. I still have a lot of time to make up my mind and see what else is coming out.

Thats going to be a good time to buy a GPU. AMD's new GPU should be out by then. You are going to have more choices for sure. The new flagship looks like its between the GTX 1080 and GTX 1080Ti in performance.
