I am using a Z170 Classy K and Windows 7 64 Bit Pro OEM I heard that there was a problem that caused the "Windows Update" search to take a really long time. But I also heard that there was a update that you can manually install to stop this problem. Does anyone know the update? Also is it safe to install this update first before all the others?

If memory serves I believe this can be solved somewhat by using Internet Explorer: In IE try: http://catalog.update.microsoft.com/v7/site/home.aspx

Also change DNS to 8.8.8.8 / 8.8.4.4 from Google. Without it will take ages.

iVVChewy9141VVi So since I don't use intel Bluetooth driver from reading I will install KB 3020369 then 3172605. Am I reading this right. Also I can do this on a fresh install without having to install anything else no internet no nothing?
After the fresh Win7 install, I disabled Windows update. Then I installed the chipset drivers, then graphics drivers. Then I installed KB3020369. Then I enabled Windows auto update again, but only to check for updates and let me decide on which to update. From there I installed all the security updates & SP1. I didn't install any optional updates until I had gone through any remaining "important" updates and installed the one's I felt were needed. I never ended up needing KB3172605. Just installing 3020369 made all the updates pretty fast. Shortly after every reboot between installing updates, I was notified again of more updates ready for download/install.

I saved both those KB's to my desktop, but only ended up installing 0369 and my updating searches were running fast. I don't think having SP1 already installed should affect anything. You did have the chipset driver installed first though?

I have yet to build my computer I am just making your I understand this problem before I build that's all. I want to make sure my steps are correct and I have them on a USB Drive ready to go. I guess I'm nervous of breaking something or this wont work. I also heard to disconnect the Ethernet cable to install to cause less issues.

Ok. You can unplug your ethernet cable if you want, but during the Win7 install, you'll be asked whether or not you want Windows to update automatically (don't recall exact verbage), I select no. Once the OS is installed, I go into Windows update right away to verify it's disabled. Then proceed to installing the chipset and graphics drivers and how I described in my post above.

FYI you must have SP1 installed before you install the KB above or try to run Windows Updates. Best to install SP1 and not do it through Windows Updates. Windows 8.1 and Server 2012R2 does the something, I just start it at night and check it in the AM.

I did not install SP1 until after chipset, graphics and then KB3020369, then I let Windows look for updates and installed security updates and SP1. Worked flawlessly for me. And even now, update searches are fast (a few minutes) after booting into Win7.

Wrestled with the update issue for some months..Had installed SP1 and the Convenience rollup package from the Microshaft Update Catalog and a few other things and was still stuck on Checking for Updates..Pretty much gave up on it 'till now..Decided to scope out the link from bdary..Then went to Control Panel -> Programs and Features -> View Installed Updates and had every one mentioned except KB3172605..Installed KB3172605, rebooted, ran Windows Update again and BAM, it only took about 5 minutes to Check for Updates..Maybe not for everybody but KB3172605 did it for me..Thanks for that link, bdary, none of the many other sites I've scoured seemed to mentioned that one..All good now!..YAY!

I think we have like 4 or 6 Thread about this same Windows 7 Install Problem. Maybe a Great Mod can put a sticky up and put it all in the right order for other to follow. We well have Windows 7 users here on the Forum for at least 2 more years (IMHO)

You understand it completely wrong. When performing update check, change DNS to Google before you start the process. Update check will never find anything unless you pick Google DNSes. Not a single W7 update check I've done in past 24 months worked without Google DNS. Latest version of WU client + Google DNS work 100% for me. Convenience Rollup is often more miss than hit. On my last W7 install it basically did nothing, because after connecting with WU I had about 400 patches to download... with CR installed.
