For a long while I was running a GTX 780 Ti and a GTX 680 added in as the slow little brother for GPU projects. The 780 Ti had issues after a power outage about a year ago. It limped along for another 6 to 8 months crunching away but none of the video out ports would work at all. It finally died about three months ago and I suspended doing any GPU projects since the GTX 680 wasn't worth the effort all by itself. At that time I even considered stopping Distributed Computing all together. But I had a goal for my CPU so I kept chugging along with it and would make a final decision when I hit my goal.

Well I hit my goal but I keep going since there was a new project dealing with Childhood cancer and I wasn't going to let that pass me by. Then about a month ago I came into some extra money. Its a long story involving a bank employee that messed up and it took an investigation by the state bank regulatory agency to fix. But I ended up with a bank I will never ever do business with again and $750 in my pocket that I didn't have access to for about a year. So I invested in a GTX 1070 and updated from my ancient 19" 1920x1080 TN monitor to a Acer 27" 2560x1440 IPS monitor. The 1070 is outputting around 2 million points a day on Collatz so far. That is more than my 780 Ti and the 680 ever did combined. I would love to see what the 1070 can do with GPU Grid but the lack of work from that project has made it impossible to find out.

So yeah, I'm semi back into the swing of things.

Glad to hear about your GPU upgrade and it's great to see you here.  I've seen your crunching stats still moving and hoped everything was well.

Cool story! And a great ending. I remember a short while ago you posted you did not feel that crunching was justified or at a minimum you had your doubts.
There are some really worthwhile projects and I am glad to see you back!!

    Welcome back Khali!
I also just got a 1070 and tried GPU Grid and decided not to wait for work units because of needing to see what the card could do. I'll get back to it soon. In most respects the 1070 seems to be on a par with, or just under the 980ti. Uses less power too. Not exactly apples to apples but the 980ti (system) draws about 300 watts folding and the 1070 (system) about 235 watts, for very similar results. Enjoy the card, I know I am.

Nice card! Really sorry to read that unfortunate situation with the bank. Glad you got that behind you!

Right now if your want the most bang for your buck I think the 1070 is the sweet spot. I looked at the 1080 and just could not justify paying some where around $250 to $300 more for 25% to 30% more performance. With the announcement of the 1080 Ti that situation changed a bit by bringing down the price of the 1080 a little. But I still think the "bang for the buck" award still goes to the 1070.

The bank issue is just a small symptom of what the last year has been like. Trying to get my fathers estate sorted out has been a nightmare. The court lost the original copy of my fathers will. Then lost two more copies we supplied to them. Not to mention losing two checks we gave them to pay the court costs. It took hand delivering the last copy of the will and check and getting a signed receipt from the clerk of courts to solve the issue. When I inquired in who was going to pay for getting certified copies made of the will and paying for the costs of stopping payment on the two lost checks those useless bureaucrats in the county court house just looked at me with a blank look. So yeah, I'm not real thrilled with "bureaucrats", be they in government or private business, at this point. I've made it a point to hold them accountable when they screw up and try to weasel out of being held responsible for their actions.

I agree with your conclusion that the 1070 is the best bang for the buck.  I bought one last fall to be ready for the last folding contest.  After that I was planning to run GPUgrid and was disappointed to see the lack of work.  Does anyone know of any other BOINC medical/biological projects available now that use GPUs?

I'm not sure but I'll visit the active projects home pages and look. Ever since POEM went down it's been slim pickings.

GpuGrid is the last GPU Bio-med project standing on Boinc at this point. The only other option is folding. I swore I wouldn't go back to folding after the way a lot of people were treated on their forums. So I been running Collatz and looking at Prime Grid, Asteroids, or even Seti.

+1 what Khali said. http://boinc.drugdiscoveryathome.com lists GPUs in their project discription, but only has CPU and ARM applications at this time. Folding may be the only other GPU bio/med option right now.

GPUGrid has some work now. For those that want to give their new cards a go at it, my 1070 was doing 1 short runs in 85 minutes and only running 50% gpu power. I added the second wu and it bumped up to 70% power and they take 130 minutes.
