My warranty just ended 3-4 months the ago for my 4 TB Seagate HDD. It lasted just over three years. Yesterday, Windows 10 was booting and after the logo disappeared, the screen said there weren't any monitor connections. Next, I tap the power button (not hold) so it goes into shutdown. It restarts and goes into Windows normally. Now, I hear the platters wind down some time later and wind up when it's in heavier use. No HDD errors.

Lastly, I need to find a replacement. I'd like to get a Pro Desktop solution this time.

I read reviews and both WD and Seagate have their fair share of reliability issues. However, their Pro Desktop solutions appear to be far more reliable.

It's my Programs drive and it's still clone-able.

Suggestions?

get a Western Digital Red if you want long term, they arn't the fastest but they are reliable. But even then I'd suggest getting 2 so you can also back up your data, possibly set it up as Raid-1.

How about WD Gold? They're data centre drives but I'm looking into whether they're as fast as Black's and aren't too loud.

It'll be for programs including games.

    Seagate Barracuda 4 TB.

I'm thinking of either a WD Gold or WD Black.

The WD Gold has the same dB as the WD Black's. The Gold's are as fast as the Black's but with extra technologies for quality purposes and are helium filled. They also have 2 million hours MTBF.

Edit: Actually, the 8 TB Gold's and higher are helium sealed.

I decided to exchange the Gold for the Black.

Reasons: tests show quicker game loading times, similar technologies offered as the Gold, same mfg warranty: 5 years, still great reliability.

Good choice - I've had great reliability out of my 2TB WD Black and HGST Ultrastar drives in my server that runs 24/7.

What is with the Black drives and a slight tick sound at the same time at around the same interval? The first drive I got was like that and now the second has it. It occurs when idle even without any data on the disk.

After research, it is common and its cause is due to Preventive Wear Leveling. The user below has the same drive as I do: WD4004FXWX (WD 4TB Black with 128 MB cache).

    https://community.wd.com/...-wd-black-4tb/183096/3

"Hi everybody. I had a great talk with someone in Level 3 tech support who explained what's going on.

Apparently the sound I'm hearing is PWL - "Preventive Wear Leveling". It's a periodic head sweep to distribute lubricant and prevent wear in a particular place if lubricant were to build up in one spot. On many older models, this would happen maybe once a minute. But on some builds it's maybe every 5 seconds. My drives are WD4004FXWX 4TB Black drives.

    Hope this helps."

Would you say the Preventive Wear Leveling feature is loud enough to be a factor in a (relatively) quiet build?

those seagate 4tb drives die like clock work right around the 4year mark, with out fail. i have some WD blacks that are 10 years old and still run great, just depends on how much they are used. if you want fast then its either ssd or 10k rpm sas data center drives, but they are quite pricey

I have a pair of 4TB WD Blacks, which are almost 4 years old.  I couldn't be happier.  After a Seagate failure (factory installed) in my wife's computer, she was upgraded to a WD Black several years ago, with similar happiness level.  (Her metric is simple: everything works = good)
