Anyone got any suggestions on motherboards?

My current board is likely faulty, exhibiting some strange issues and none of the hardware like the CPU/ GPU/ Ram/ SSD/ PSU seem to be broken.
I'm running the 6th gen i7 6700k, but I'm looking to just go to Z270. I'm figuring if I'm switching anyways, I might as well upgrade.
To my understanding my Skylake i7 will be completely compatible with a Z270 motherboard and should be plug and play and have no compatibility issues right?

Currently my budget is around $250, I think my budget is high enough, I don't realistically see myself needing to go much higher.

I'm debating the ASUS Maximus IX Hero Z270. Although I'm a little bit hesitant to go with ASUS again since my current board may have arrived a lemon. Apparently with ASUS... you either have a terribly painful experience or a wonderful one with no inbetween.
My original brands I was debating between was ASUS, MSI and Gigabyte. I've removed Gigabyte from the list as I've heard lots of hit or miss stories with them, either coming with DIMM slots that don't work, or being simply DOA.

Thanks for the help! :)

Specs I'll be running:
-i7 6700k
-EVGA 1080 FTW (Possibly 1080ti if I can step up)
-2x8GB Gskill TridentZ 3200
-EVGA 750W G2
-Samsung 850 EVO 250GB
-Corsair H100i v2 w/ 2x Noctua NF F12
-4x Noctua NF S12A
-Corsair 400C

ASUS Maximus IX Hero Z270 is on sale for $215 right now on newegg.  I'm happy with it, but it hasn't been a month yet. MSI Gaming M7 Z270 looks nice and had good onboard audio too.

I wonder if prices will drop after March 2nd when AMD new CPU is released.

I'd say give gigabyte a try. I'm currently using a gigabyte board without any issues.

All the Z270 boards are still new, A bit afraid of buying new tech since some problems happen after a few months but I also kinda don't want to pay the same price for Z170.
But no complaints with your Hero so far?

I'll take a look at the MSI one too! Thanks! I noticed the Hero went on sale too, It went on sale maybe a day after I was looking at it. Although only $15 :(

Which Gigabyte board are you using? I know they make good boards, but from what i've heard it either works beautifully or it has some problems :(
Knowing with my terrible luck with components, I really want to get a reliable working board out of the box. I even got a faulty ASUS somehow

I'm not running a Z270 board. This is the board I'm using.

Ah gotcha I see! X99 chipset.

You own multiple computers right...? Are you using all Gigabyte boards?

Gotcha I see. I'll take another look at Gigabyte then.

But i'm probably choosing between the ASUS Maximus IX Hero, MSI Z270 Gaming M7 or possibly one of the Gigabyte AORUS boards around the 200-250 mark.
You'd choose the Gigabyte out of the 3?

No issues at all with my ASUS Z270 HERO. I built a PC for a family member last year using ASUS Z170 HERO, no issues at all with it. Have you tried updating to latest bios for your motherboard?

Here was my short list before choosing to go with ASUS ROG Maximus IX Hero Z270.
    MSI Gaming M7 Z270
    GIGABYTE Aorus GA-Z270X-Gaming 7
ASUS ROG Maximus IX Hero Z270

Some people were reporting issues when trying to install audio software on MSI Gaming M7 Z270, back when i was researching it.

GIGABYTE default bios was having issues with cpu voltage going too high causing high temps. They probably fixed that with bios update by now (users could manually set it).

ASUS Z270 HERO, for some reason windows10  keeps forcing the system to install older intel lan driver. Also it only has one USB 2.0 header if that matters to you at all.

If you look hard enough, you can find issues or complaints from customers on any Z270 mobo.

Re: Suggestions on a new motherboard? 2017/02/28 22:42:35 (permalink)
Id say those 3 would be the ones I'm choosing from exactly, It seems like ASUS has a better reputation and they have better/ more features. Motherboard is always the hardest part to pick.

I heard about the Gigabyte giving too much CPU voltage, I was talking with a guy about this earlier today. He said that apparently Gigabyte fixed those issues right before launch.

With the ASUS I was actually hearing people having problems with the audio drivers not installing properly or something of that sort. But Windows 10 forcing an older lan driver to install, does that happen to everyone? Can you override it somehow or something? Or does it really not affect performance much and it doesn't matter?

And as to my motherboard, yes I've updated BIOS already. I've reinstalled the OS a few times as well. Just running into some strange nonsensical problems.
But i've been discussing this with a few people on facebook for the past two months or so, we're essentially reaching the conclusion at this point that the board is likely faulty if the other components are fine.
But some of the issues include:
-Fastboot not working when XMP is turned on, shutdown's get logged as an improper shutdown and says fastboot did not work. Results in slow boots/ shutdowns.
-Yesterday, got a freeze in BIOS when I was configuring fan curve, had to use Ctrl Alt Del to reboot.
-Today reinstalling OS (I've done it a few times already) after finishing installation, it prompted a restart. For whatever reason it just turned off the screen, screen lost connection. Had to force shut down. Tried reinstalling, had to try a few times to get into setup. First few times restarting the computer with install media plugged in, pressing Del, wouldn't get me into BIOS, shows black screen. After trying a few times I got into BIOS, changed boot order, save and continue, black screen.
That was the main weird thing, I've reinstalled the OS a bunch of times, I know how to do it. It was a new install media on a formatted USB too.
-Reinstalling GPU drivers causes Battlefield 1 to essentially malfunction. After reinstalling, upgrading or downgrading i'll get a severely increased CPU usage, which causes a bottleneck and in turn causes decreases in GPU usage. Game runs fine up until the point where DDU is used to clean drivers and reinstall. No clue why it does that, it's done that on a 1070 FTW and a 1080 FTW, definitely not the GPU. Done it through clean installs too.

And just some other weird problems, don't make much sense.

    CPU: i7 6700k
    GPU: EVGA GTX 1080 FTW
    Motherboard: ASUS Z170-Pro
    Ram: (2x8GB) 16GB Gskill TridentZ @3200mhz
    PSU: EVGA 750W G2
Storage: 250GB Samsung SSD, 1TB Seagate HDD 240GB Mushkin SSD
    Cooling: 4x 120mm Noctua NF-S12A, 1x 140mm Corsair, Corsair H55 water cooler w/ 2x Corsair 120mm fans.

One thing i wish ASUS bios had was simple mode for novice users to find the settings.
