Wondering if anyone's built a Z270 FTW K in a Fractal Design R5 case?  The case has a rim around the motherboard and the side facing USB 3.0 headers don't have enough room to plug in the USB 3.0 cable to the front panel. Just looking for advice on how to resolve this (perhaps an adapter?) as I don't want to have two dead USB 3.0 ports on the front of my new PC.

Thanks for any advice.

Thanks Cool GTX for the quick reply.  I've been looking at those online but the images don't show the plugs very well and it looks like the key wouldn't fit my case connector. I guess I will have to try one and see. Thanks.

Edit I had the wrong adapter.  To use this, you'd  have to clip one pin as the USB uses 19 and one is blocked.

Would you not need to remove the current ones that are on the MB, de-soldering that is.

Ah...blast...there's ones that plug into the existing at 90 degree so you can plug the case connector in vertically.

I would need to have a female to male right angle. I saw the male to male but that won't work. HeavyHemi, I don't see a link to that male to female right angle adapter you show. I haven't been able to find that one.  Can you send me a link?

ahh. Nevermind. I found it. Different search terms work wonders!

Thanks for the reply Cool GTX.   That may also work. I went ahead and ordered the right angle MF adapter shown in HeavyHemi's post. Shipping and Handling was ONLY 10 times more than the price!  But if it works it's worth it!  I know I'll have to clip one of the pins but hopefully it will work as the rest are just straight through connections to change the angle.  <crosses fingers>

If this was not USB-3 there are also ribbon cable press on headers .

I am thinking of using the R5 also.  Did you get a fix, and if so could you link the part.  Let us know how it worked.  Thanks.

Unfortunately what I got didn't work. I ordered this right-angle connector:
I just got it today and when I tried to check it against the USB 3.0 plug on my case the right angle connector was significantly wider and the pins spaced further apart so they wouldn't fit. It didn't say USB 3.0 so I should've been more careful.  In any case I'm back to the drawing board and 12 bucks poorer.

If I do find something to fit I'll post it here though it may take a couple weeks to get it since Amazon and NewEgg don't seem to have anything in stock.

I just wanted to follow up and let you all know that I found a solution.  I had to wait a few days for it to come into stock but the shipping cost and time to deliver was much better than the first part I ordered. It took about 5 days to arrive vs. 2.5 weeks for the first part.

The forum keeps making my pasted link disappear for some reason. To get it to show up I removed the https header:   modmymods.com/usb-3-0-20-pin-internal-header-adapter-cable-low-profile-connector-cab024.html

I connected the ribbon cable to USB 3.0 header 3/4 rather than  1/2 simply because the power supply was in the way and I didn't want to have to remove it. It works fine though and I shouldn't need the other header.

Thanks again for all your advice.

Thanks for the fix.  Off-topic: what cooling system are you using, and if fan cooler, what model?

drwhitley... I'm using a Noctua DH-15 air cooler with the two 140mm fans that came in the box. It has consistently high ratings as an air cooler and I didn't want to bother with liquid cooling.  It's very big though. Fits in the Fractal Design R5 case just fine but if you use it be careful not to use high profile memory DIMMS. I used Corsair LPX models which I believe are 32mm high or thereabouts.  They fit just fine under the radiator fins.

Noctua has a lower profile model (NH-D15S)  that has offset radiator fins to allow higher DIMMS but it only has one fan and I felt the extra fan was worth the size. It is a huge cooler though. made it hard to plug in the CPU power connector so if you have the option and can plug that in before you mount the motherboard your life would be simpler. I couldn't because I was still using my power supply in my old machine at the time.

Thanks for your quick reply.  I originally ordered the Cryorig R1 Ultimate and it would not clear the MB heat sink.  I have since ordered the Cryorig H7 (prior to your reply) as it seems (by product spec's) to clear all obstacles and should provide for a modest over-clock and good esthetic appeal (black and white build).  If it does not work as expected I will definitely go for the Noctua. As for the case and 3.0 USB clearance problems; I cut out a 1x3 inch hole in my case and use a grommet of the same size (again, prior to your reply as I am impatient). I do not like EVGA using the horizontal connectors for their 3.0 USB, supplemental PCI, and fan headers at the bottom of their MBoard.  I was hoping to use BIOS to control fans, but because of connection orientation I will be using case fan control for all but CPU fan cooler.  I hope EVGA or case manufacturers take notice and make adjustments in their products in the future, otherwise I may choose other MB manufacturers even though EVGA has great product support.
