WOW... I am very interested to see where that guard goes.  Man... that looks incredible so far!

I am still away on orders until 11th of June... so it will have to be sometime after that.

Yeah that is a beautiful piece of Damascus.

If you have another damascus blank or two I'd be happy to purchase them from you. I have thoroughly enjoyed getting back into this. So much so I purchased a 4x36 bench top belt sander. Once I get more comfortable grinding in the blade profile, I plan to make a set of Damascus kitchen knives.

Problem is this is a rabbit hole, now I want some leather tools to make a sheath.

HAHA!! That's awesome! I like your knife so far. That etching is really cool looking. I think this was Nateman's intentions with this project, I'm glad it worked. Bad Nateman!

Yes, I am a horrible influence on this forum :)

Bruno, I can make as many Damascus billets as you desire.  How big would you want them for kitchen knives?  I do have the pattern for a kitchen knife, I could probably sell as a kit if you want.

this one was differential quenched, and I didn't temper it, so that the blade was as hard as possible for edge retention.  But care must be used to not chip the edge.

This is the only kind I know how to make. Somehow I don't think it would stand up to the ones you're proposing making.

Dang,

I sanded down the grips and epoxied them onto the blade after roughing it and the scales with 36 grit.

drilled the rivet holes in one side and then put on the other side and clamped it last night.

This morning I carefully sanded the handle down until it was perfect. Countersunk the holes for the rivets, and proceeded to put them in.

I knew...I just knew I should have gone with some screw in types. One of the rivets shifted when driving them together and cracked one of the sides in two places. For now I am going to finish the wood and fill in the crack with poly and hope it doesn't eventually break off. If it does, I'll chisel off the damaged side, hammer out the rivets, and go to corbyn screws.

Waiting on the oil to soak in a bit longer, then I have to coat it again, Suffice to say, the wood looks nothing short of utterly beautiful. I just wish it hadn't cracked on me.

As a side note, I dont like these rivets, the one in the silver guard snapped and popped out just from the shock of driving the others together.

Haven't even intentionally sharpened the blade yet, but it already split open an index finger. Fun times!

Cracks filled in with epoxy and unless you know where to look you would never know they were there.

The only one that is noticeable looks like it is just part of the pattern.

I am coating it with poly now, but it's drying ungodly slow. Hopefully tomorrow morning I can handle it without leaving marks.

For those of you interested parties, here is the knife that inspired me. I have used this knife in almost every outdoor activity for the past 12+ years. It shows wear, but oh if this knife could talk. I look forward to retiring this one and moving to my new personally made one this year.

Pictures!

First of all, this thing actually balanced out almost perfectly.

I still have some more layers of poly to put on this to fill a few other small divots there I caught something on the wood or dropped it.

Ill sharpen it soon and it will be ready to go to the field!

Man that turned out nice!! How long is the blade? Dumb question, is the dip in the blade for thumb? And will you miss the hook on your old reliable? So many questions....

I rarely used the gut hook, i thought about putting it in this new one but decided against it. If it feels missing later I can always add it down the road. It's just so akward to sharpen well.

Dip in blade, idk what the original intention was probably just astetics, but I use it as a place to put my other hand for more downward pressure when I am opening a breastplate on a deer.

I'll have to measure but rough spline length is something like four inches.

I might replace the guard cause it got scuffed up a bit during grip shaping.

I don't know how... but that blade came out so very "san mai".  how the Damascus looks like its a layer.  Not sure why that didn't happen on mine.  I think its awesome as hell.

You have really out-done yourself.  I am so proud to see you dust off your old tools and get back into a passion that you love!  Now lets see what Scarlett can cook up.

I think its neat how you and I know have matching blades, in terms of the same billet made your knife and mine.  I honestly like yours better.  The guard is the icing on the cake.

Re: Calling out my fellow EVGA Craftsmen!! EVGA forum contest hosted by yours truly! 2017/05/24 06:02:48 (permalink)
I actually think I know how that happened...

I made a huge Damascus billet then wanted to try some san mai with said Damascus, so I broke up the Damascus billet into several parts.

One was just Damascus where I made that knife from (pictured earlier that I made as a gift).  Two, had a center layer of 15N20 High nickle steel with Damascus as the outer layers of the sandwich (your billet), and the third was Damascus in the center with the 15N20 as the outer layers.  That 3rd billet I did first and it didn't turn out how I planned, so your billet just sat there.  They were supposed to be a matching set of kitchen knives, but they weren't big enough.

Glad some use came of the billet.

I'll need to get some measurements, but I would like you to make another billet for me that is large enough that I can make a copy of the browning shock n awe tomahawk.

http://www.browning.com/p...ck-n-awe-tomahawk.html

I think this made out of the same type of material with a beautiful wood grip would be a pretty easy and awesome next project.

I'll look at the sizes draw it out decide if I want to go bigger or smaller and give you some dimensions in an email tomorrow.

Once you have those just shoot me a price for your time and materials.

So you will need it roughly forged into shape correct?  I have been thinking of making a tomahawk for a while now.

Roughly, if it didn't need to be so thick, I would have you just make a large sheet for me and I could cut out several knives in addition to the tomahawk.

I made a sheath for my damascus one I just finished. I dont wanna show it cause it looks like a 6th grade 4h project. Leather is not my medium...

I will be putting the handle on the competition knife this week if it will stop raining long enough to dry up the yard.

This was the first (and so far only) leather sheath I have ever made.  Realize the first time you touch anything, it won't be the nicest you have ever done.  Keep at it and your skills will improve.

Btw, I am finally back home so now we can talk about that tomahawk.

Scarlett's billet is ready.

Certainly got the hang of drawing out material widthwise now.  Plenty big for a chopper.

Great looking knife Bruno. That turned out really well all the way around. I must agree with you on the rivets though, I hate rivets too. I will almost never use them for anything cause they never hold up and always work themselves loose eventually. See, your gut told you what to do and you your brain came in and over thought it and you went rivet. Trust that gut instinct brotha!!
