Hey All,
Just wondering if there is any harm in trying an 2699 v4 ( or 2696 v4 ) in my x99 classified? I understand it's not in the supported list but I see some other E5 v3's are supported. Please advise.

Sorry, I should have phrased my question differently. Is there any of knowing if the BIOS supports the V4? As in, code exists in the BIOS that will allow them to work. I understand the V4 xeons aren't on the supported listed, meaning they've been thoroughly tested for compatibility.  I guess what I'm really asking if there is even a point in trying it? I have an unopened x99 classified. Should I just sell it and get a workstation board instead (ASUS or ASrock) and avoid a headache? I don't believe EVGA has an workstation boards currently ( which really hurts my feelings being an SR2 and SRX owner ).

I don't see that it could hurt anything trying it out, but in your case, with your board still boxed up, I would give EVGA tech support a call and verify it first before unboxing.

I've updated to the latest BIOS and I'm happy to report that my 2696 v4 ( 2699 V4 OEM ) works just fine in my x99 classified. Got a fresh win 10 pro install working without issue so far.

That's great news and that is one beefy chip.  22-Cores/44-Threads of madness.  I can only wish. lol

I'm also glad it worked out for me, too! I've been depressed since my SR2 and then SRX died. Now I had double the performance of my old rig in a single socket system! EVGA ftw ;)

Thank you for letting us know that you were able to run the 2696 in your X99, and I'm happy to hear it worked out for you.

excellent news R_cyph. Thanks for updating your topic.  Very generous of you. Seems like a good community here.

I've asked this question in general terms elsewhere on this board, but didn't see you posting there.  So I doubt you will come across my question. Have you tried running with ECC memory? I understand from the other topic that unregistered memory may work, while registered memory is unlikely to work.

If you are running ECC memory, could you please provide me the type/specs?

I need to get a workstation up and running quickly to start a project for a client, and time is running short. Unfortunately I don't have the space in my house, or the budget, to have two systems.  I would like to know how yours is working out for you as a game/entertainment platform as well.

Now if only that chip wasn't 5000+ dollars in Canada :) . Almost half the price in the US!  Worth ordering from the US maybe for 22 cores / threads if the software I am using will take advantage of that many.  Still verifying with the software company.
    Cheers

The memory controller is built into the processor, only the Xeon line-up has support for ECC memory. As for firmware support on EVGA's end... they don't have a huge list for RAM support like MSI and Asus do. I know MSI's X99 boards support ECC RAM, as long as your using a Xeon processor that is.

    Thank you RainStryke.

Information that you just provided is what leads me to ask R_cyph if he has tested any ECC memory on this EVGA board. I suspect he may have since he is running an officially unsupported Xeon CPU.  He may be the demographic who uses, and might have tested, ECC memory since he possibly already had it on hand if he uses his computer for computing and scientific applications.

For myself, it would be a fairly expensive venture to test since I don't already have ECC memory.

So yes, we are looking outside what EVGA officially supports unfortunately.  I like the EVGA board both for its simplicity (not too many bells and whistles that can add to problems), what looks like decent audio, and for their fairly well documented customer service.  The board pretty much has what I need without extras that I don't have much use for.

    Regards,
    Dave

It sounds like you are looking for a cheap way to source a server.

I'd snag a pair of chips like this and run them on this server board.
