excerpt from link above in post 1 "All in all, this will probably go in one of three ways: the companies are found guilty and AMD stands to make money; the companies are found not to have been infringing on patents, in which AMD loses money; or the companies enter an agreement for cross patent licensing and maybe some monetary value changing hands between them. It's still too soon to look into any of these outcomes, though. For now, just know that AMD too sets lawsuits against other companies." (end excerpt) If the infringement can be proven, then my Vote for the most likely outcome: cross patent licensing and maybe some monetary value changing hands

LG, MediaTek, VIZIO, and Sigma? you ask me AMD needs allies not enemies Even lost $$ in the last quarter what Tech they have may be covered under prior art and and infringement would be minor consider most are not in a competing product in fact 2 are Monitors/TV's - AMD does not make monitors or TV's Mediatek makes CDR/DVD/blue ray players and sigma makes cameras so what harm is done?? with regard to TV/monitors how does it harm? - like the gpu can't feed it properly and they need AMD tech twice to handle it?.... or TV feed from a device needs some type of frame buffering or basic GPU to run TV menu maybe has similar tech ask me it's weak Weak play for AMD to go patent trolling - sounds desperate in fact they don't make some of the chips inside their tech - and may be a 3rd party GPU manufacturer to blame LG uses arm and ???Mali (GPU) inside the TV it's go after the small dogs that don't have deep pockets to defend not like AMD going after samsung.....imagine that - then samsung throw counterclaims (patents)out and Samsung owning AMD at the end of it

Things that would bring interest to this thread.. what exactly is AMD suing them for infringing.

The '506 patent relates to "a graphics processing architecture that enables a large amount of graphics data to be rendered to a frame buffer". The '133 patent relates to specialized "texture" processing circuitry that is employed by GPUs. Lastly, the '454 patent relates to a "unified shader" hardware architecture for GPUs. you ask me this is a 3rd party gpu issue LG uses PowerVR GPU and LG and ARM have announced a partnership that will see the former’s HDTVs use the latter’s ARM11 MPCore multicore processor and ARM Mali GPUs. Vizio uses Arm v6 Im assuming the blue ray players need an arm core and GPU too (built in menus with browser and netflix, etc) Same would go with camera menus and processing

They need the money to be able to compete with Intel.

Why can't they just not renew the agreement that gives intel access to the AMD 64 patent, that would cripple intel.

It's not usually about the money in these cases. When a company owns a patent for a technology if they fail to enforce a patent they can actually end up loosing the rights to that patent. In order to hold onto the right of the patent they are required by the law to take action when someone they believe is using their patent unlawfully. While sometimes this can result in a monetary gain for the company it can also help secure their rights for the patent for future use.

thing is AMD should be taking on "Imagination and ARM" ie the GPU chip maker ....not 3rd parties companies that bought the chip on good faith

According to the complaint, these patents generally relate to architectures for graphics processing unit (GPU) circuitry. The complaint specifically refers to various televisions and smartphones, specifically, towards the graphics processing systems within those televisions and smartphones - as infringing products. ----------------- patent '506 framebuffers are common place to hold data(taught to all programmers before there were graphic cards) - any data - just because it hold graphic data doesn't make it patentable - so just because you made a cache to hold data like a software frame buffer in hardware that this is patentable( you realize that software uses hardware to make a framebuffer - all you did is find a algorithm that can do it in circuit - and there are many algorithms that can do that - so many ways to implement a hardware framebuffer)..this is dead on sight patent '133 - which can be implemented many ways including by any cpu - unless you can provide circuit designs papers(from them and AMD) to show how identical they are - this is a wash patent '454 and unified shaders - heck why don't u sue Nvidia or every other GPU maker - this would probably come as prior art - considering how shaders came a long time ago before AMD heck why don't we go back - who made the first graphic cards?? http://www.techspot.com/article/650-history-of-the-gpu/ there is enough prior art out there
