Hi all, I bought for christmas an Evga 650 GQ for my new PC and I got some question due to a strange noise (coil whine?):

- I was using the power supply with ECO mode ON, and after some weeks of use, when I put the PC ON, it sounds like a coil whine, but if you wait some time (+/- 10 mins), the "tempo" of that sound got lower until it stops; so, due to get safe, I left he ECO mode OFF.

- After some days of using the power supply with ECO mode OFF, when I put the PC ON, the fan goes at high rpm (much noise!) but when it reaches like 10-15 mins it goes at normal rpm (relax!); I readed in internet forums that this could come from motherboard energy supply efficiency options, but I only deactivated the USB power supply when the PC is OFF.

So, this is normal? there isn´t a Evga software for control fan rpm?, I need to try other house plug to test but I coudnt have a cable across the room.

Thx in advance!.

Info:
- Motherboard: Gigabyte gaming k3
- Graphic card: Geforce GTX 1050 Ti (Gigabyte bench)
- Processor: i5 6600k
- RAM: G.skill DDR4 3200 (O.C. done for reach that 3200!)

Hello flop123 and welcome to the Forums!

There is no way to manually control the fan speed of the 650 GQ besides switching ECO mode on/off. This is handled automatically based on load/temps.

A couple of things you can do to find the source of coil whine are:

    1. Test the product in another system or test the current system with another power supply unit. This can be the cause of the sound which can manifest itself through the graphics card or power supply.

    2. If you are using a UPS (battery backup) or power strip try plugging directly into the wall outlet to see if this may resolve the issue.

Keep in mind that coil whine does not effect performance or damage the unit in any way.

If you have a moment, please rate my service. We appreciate the feedback!

Hi, The graphics card isn´t the issue (tested), I´ll rec the sound and upload it soon; need to try other plug too.
Actually I don´t have another power supply for test, I´ll try to get one too to test.

    Thx in advance.

Hi, sorry for respond so late, I tryed different electrical wall connections, under voltage the RAM, deactivate the motherboard fan´s limits advices and the "decorate" led too, well, the only thing that I didnt try is to disconnect an old Hard disk.

Anyway, this looks strange, because it only happens at start up the pc/boot and with the ECO mode ON during 10 mins.

I noticed too that if after that 10 mins when the sound dissapears, If I shut down the pc, and wait (or not) some time, and re-power on the pc, the sound doesnt appear , looks like if some component need to get temperature or a capacitor is chargin?¿?¿?¿? and only if the ECO mode is ON ¿?¿? so strange .

Ops, I couldn´t get another power supply for test the PC components...

    Well this is the record:
Take in mind that when the time pass the tempo of the sound goes down until it stops (said like 10 mins)

Could this to influence in the issue? (it´s a gigabyte app, some options comes in the BIOS too).
I think it´s like power saving/sleep modes configs:

Tested: Nope, doesnt matter that config. I disconnected all hardware except the OS SSD and the sounds continue.

Ok, I made a new record with the entire duration of the sound (13 mins), I didn´t disconnected the CPU fan (it´s the continuous 'bzzzz'), but you can easily check the tempo during the process (good sound example at minuts: 1:00 - 4:00 - 9:00 - 12:00).

Is this a coil whine? im not really sure :

Anyway sorry for insisting, is just the little afraid of get a broken new PC .

    Thx in advance.

If the coil whine bothers you, request a RMA.
