Soooooo looks like if I believe all I read on these forums now my evga X58 SLI Classified 141-BL-E760-A1 (Rev 1:1) will take a Westwere Xeon X Series.
 
I have 3 avail here to choose from so which one will be best :-)

Just got offered a X5672 for basically half the price of the other 2 ... so it's got to be the go eh?

Thanks yes after posting my brain freeze cleared and I realised this was only a quad core ... sigh ... was typing just before bed and was overtired ... Will try to secure the X5660 today thou the X5680 guy has basically dropped his price to match so I'm just tossing up what to do ... I know the X5660 is more common and overclocked by more people but the X5680 is a lot more grunt as stock, so if I am able to get it up to 4.2 is should by rights have a little more core grunt? (torque) as I don't have to push it so much to reach the same overclock?

Well got my X5680 yesterday and wacked it in last night.

Have to say impressed so far with it ... followed the basic's of what I have read and have it stable @ 4314.

Benched my i7 930 @ 4.2 in CINEBENCH before removing so I had a better idea of just where it was sitting when the new chip went in.

My i7 930 @ 4.2 = 534 score
the X5680 @ 4.3 - 980 score!!!

Wow that impressed me no end.

It is as stable as with current settings, and a VCore of 1.305.

Tried going up to 4413 (25x176) but it bluescreened after a hour so went to bed to try another day.

There are heaps of area's in the bios that confuse me no end but I am sure with a bit of playing around just locking some stuff down will have it stable at 4413.

Loving it so far ... PC has a whole new lease on life ... My FPS in iRacing (my sim of choice) we move stable and I was way up by I reckon on average 50fps so I'm up over 180fps which is massive for me.

Sooooooooo can some one give me a list of what I should set things as a start to make the 4400 move stable ... Temps seem fine and pretty balanced across the cores ... I just want to know whether like my i7 930 a good dose of volts and setting these manually will settle it in :-)

Just wish there was a way of printing the bios settings in Windows so I could post them all for your welcomed and needed comments.

Well ... Spent a few hours tweaking a little over the weekend.
 
Now have the X5680 stable @ 4.413 running 1.34V
 
Can get it to boot comfortably into windows and happy @4.5 @4.55 but crashing during testing.
 
Temps are fine, I do not see it getting over 70 with full load and the temps are level across the board.
 
I think it is a ram issue that is crashing the system.
 
As mentioned before running a Evga X58 SLI Classified ... And running 12GB Corsair Dominator-GT 2000MHz DDR3.
This is 6 x 2G ... Ram is 2x sets of triple.
 
Rig detects 10GB in bios (12GB in CPUz) and for the mountains of reading over the weekend it seems EVGA boards have a issue all 6 slots.
 
I have tested all in slot 1, and all in 6G mode, but as soon as I get all installed one of the slots stops detecting.
 
So I will try a few more tests tonight as read a few voltage suggestions on the VTT which I am according to all I have read I may not be pushing the volts enough (suggestions range from +150 - +300) currently I am at +100 and looking at my old I7 I ran it at +250 then so that maybe the issue.
 
Ether way I am still happy as with the current settings ether way as I am solid @4413 and get 965 on benching compared to 563 on my old chip.
 
I am considering new ram but it is hard to get Triple kits now, I have read Dual ram will be 30% slower than triples so wondering whether if I get 3x individual 8G DDR3 1866Mhz (GSkill or Kingston) whether that would work better than Dual or the 6 slots I currently run.
 
Ram at the moment are sitting at 1750Mhz so it would be inside the spec of the ram :-)
 
I know I could sell mine for good money still as they are awesome and I have all the packaging and fan etc.
 
So yeah think I need to fix my ram issue to stabilise @4.5. Would love to get 1000 bench so advice welcomed :-)

What are your temps when running prime95 or Intel burn test? What are you using for cooling?
What memory are you using, what is it rated for and what are you running it at?
PSU make and rating? Just wondering, these systems when overclocked and with GPU overclocked can draw more power than you may think.
The base VTT voltage on the Classified is 1.2v, so +150mv is 1.35v I would not go over that. I would try to stay at 1.3 or under if I could.1.35 with CPU voltage as well
I always set CPU and memory timing, voltage, uncore and BCLK manually, no on auto.
I run uncore at 2x memory speed or just one click under. You may have to go a little lower if you are trying to get real high memory clocks.
Keep memory speed and timings lose until you see where your CPU tops out so you do not cause issues you think is the CPU.
 

Temps - Basically getting 70 across the board under 100% load. Monitoring inside my iRacing sim I get to 50 max. Idle low 30.
Memory - 12GB Corsair Dominator-GT 2000MHz DDR3 - 6x 2G 2x Triple Kits - Currently sitting at 1700Mhz with clock settings.
               So inside ram spec but as above I think its the X58 issue with 6 slots holding me back.
               Sooooo will Dual preform ok or is it a noticeable amount slower? or Option 2 was getting 3x same brand, speed etc
               of 8G chip as triple kits are few and far between now.
 
I think my CPU volts are ok I'm at 1.34 at the moment and get the same crash @ 1.35 ... I will check what my other setting are tonight when I try and sort this dam ram out ... pain in the arse it not detecting everything,

I just real the board drops 30% if in dual mode? ... Sounds extreme :-) Yeah I do not believe it.
I have AMD server with opteron CPUs that can run in single,dual, triple and quad channel. I do not see a great deal of difference once dual or better was running.
Maybe I was not saturating the bandwith that I did have? I really am not sure.
Where I have seen a difference for what ever reason is single rank vs dual rank memory. Single rank was 10% slower on the primegrid WUs.
 
The 10 of 12gb thing. When you lowered the ram speed, did you lower uncor speed?
Also in the QPI settings, I set it at the lowest setting to start, not slow mode, just the lowest setting. It gets boosted when you OC
 
Never did ask, what is it you do with your computer that would demand that much speed/bandwith and so on?
 
PS: I see your posts on the other forum (Lots of good info there) But if you're going to join a BOINC or folding team.

Think I will keep an eye on a couple of hot spec DDR3 Dual kits on auction over here then as they are prices really well ... as I doubt the drop ion performance will be that notable.
 
Yep dropped speeds on ram, have also gone right back to stock, reseated all, etc and still it only ever see a max of 10GB. So it's dropping a slot which is a right pain.
 
Have been a great lover of EVGA stuff since I built my first every rig, always had their video cards, and M/B even through here in NZ the motherboards especially are pretty dam expensive. But I built this rig new back in 2010 with twin Evga 480's and its only recently I have gotten the urge to push it a little more.
 
It has a new EVGA 980 GTX in it as well and I can tell you the FPS have increased since doing the CPU upgrade.
 
I'm a avid sim racer mate, so I spend way to much money on my hobby and I'm a muso as well so have used my rig for quite a bit of recording in the past... now its just gaming :-)  

I have some reservations regarding the xeons. I have the classified E759 board (I believe). I'm running the 920 @ 3.8 since its inception, I've been looking at the i7 970s on eBay. They're 6 cores and can achieve 4.2-4.4 well from what I read. Why wouldn't you rather get this chip vs the Xeon? I also heard that Xeon are not compatible with my ram? Triple channel corsair at 1600. I think I read the most Xeon can do is 1333 on triple channel?

hi, sorry for my english, will the w3680 fit on a x58 3 way sli classified (141 BL E761 A1) I have the i7 920 and want to upgrade x5680 or w3680 (same price) but on the official support list there is no w3680 for x58 motherboard...

Might be a lil late to post this but I'm running Asus v2 deluxe 18gb ram and a x5660 and at 4ghz benches 915 r15 cinebench. Still a great cpu and games very well. Gets around 960 at 4.2 but is more than my cooler can handle for long. Also that's with everything auto except the baseclock. Games excellent. Uses all cores on most of my games call of duty Wwii gets up to about 50 percent cpu usage when loading but runs the game mostly around 20 percent. Still a great chip especially for 20 bucks on eBay. Paid lil over 200 for mobo but came with the ram and an i7 920 Would be nice to have sata 3 tho
