This will be my first ever Gsync monitor. Would I need to reinstall my drivers? Or when plugging in the monitor. It will automatically detect the new Gsync monitor? My understanding. I enable it with in the control panel. Set games to vsync off and off I go? Everything should work?

Hello,

the Geforce drivers should pick up the fact that you have connected a gsync display however I would uninstall the drivers and then connect the display then re-install the drivers for good measure.

Also, I am not sure where in the world so much misinformation comes out on vsync and gsync but they are supposed to be used together. They are not exclusive technologies and you will still see frame tearing if the fps goes beyond the refresh rate of the display.

It was enabled for my automatically right away. I didn't need to reinstall any drivers or change any settings.

Sounds good. How about the default Hz setting? I read it defaults to 60Hz when first setting it up and you must manually put it to 144Hz?

When adjusting your resolution, you have the option to select the refresh rate. If your monitor is 144hz, change the resolution setting to whichever resolution you wish to use, with the refresh rate being 144hz.

Yeah sorry I forgot to mention that, by default that is 60Hz and as David above me said you just have to change that in the control panel in the Change Resolution section.

Re: Dell S2716DG Gsync monitor in coming with questions 2016/07/13 19:03:38 (permalink)
So here we go. Received unit a few hours ago and got it all set up. Knock on wood. I believe I received a Jesus unit and I hope it stays that way. No stuck or dead pixels, no buzzing, hdcp compliant and a very recent build. Revision A03 built in May 2016. Once setup and calibrated. I fired up The Witcher 3 and my jaw hit the floor. Stunning, glorious etc etc. Wow just WOW! Gsync is absolutely amazing and worth every penny.

Smooth as butter. Coming from my previous Dell U2415 IPS panel. I can certainly notice color shift. I can deal with it though. Its really not that bad and all about how you sit or look up etc. I certainly will not miss the IPS glow. Blacks are blacks. Its nice. Out of the box. The gamma was horrendous. No surprise here and well documented. After calibration. Comparing the results and seeing the before and after.

It was a dramatic difference. I cant stress that enough. Its very close to my IPS monitor now. TN has come a longggggggg way. WOW! To say how pleased I am with this beauty is a understatement! Calibration was done by Colormunki Display. I would only suggest using my profile if you have a A03 version panel. A01 and A02 could be really different. I am not sure. You are still free to try it out if you like regardless of version!

Targets

2.2 gamma, D65, 120cm brightness

Calibration done using factory defaults. Put those on first. Factory brightness was blazing at a whopping 304cm!

Results

Brightness 21 which put it at 118cm. 22 brightness put it at 121cm. Leave contrast alone at factory level. Its fine and does not need adjustment.

ICC profile attached. Follow this article to activate it with in Windows. https://pcmonitors.info/articles/using-icc-profiles-in-windows/

Mike406,

Just a thought. I know you mentioned buzzing. For giggles. Did you disable the audio and set it to zero? That is 2 of the first things I done. Along with disabling deep sleep.

**EDIT**

Brightness and ICC profile updated with new numbers and link

Glad to hear you didn't have these issues. Perhaps May has even more things fixed not sure. I guess I am just that unlucky. Maybe I'll order another one and see what I get. And yeah I did have Deep sleep off and I just tried turning the volume all the way down still buzzes.

I think you really just got unlucky. When you get a good one. Its a gem. I seriously doubt and hope the next one you get wont be bad.

ICC profile updated with new brightness numbers as well. Initially when first getting it and calibrating. I had lights on in my room. It was picking slightly more light. Factory reading went from initially 304cm to 298cm now with all lights off. Which in turn changed the brightness levels very slightly when re calibrating.

Okay. So I am confused. People say leave control panel defaults alone. Which Nvidia has the default for Vsync on when using G-Sync. Then turn off vsync always inside the games? But, it sounds like you are saying keep vsync on in games as well?!?! I wish Nvidia would be more clear about this and explain. Or its just going over my head......

The way I have mine setup is G-Sync - ON, Vsync - ON (in Nvidia Cpanel), and Vsync - OFF (in games).  From what I understand setting it up this way lets Nvidia control panel worry about Vsync and it only enables it if the game exceeds your monitor's refresh rate.  So from 30fps-144fps it uses G-Sync but above 144 it disables g-sync and turns on v-sync (to avoid tearing).  Basically they should call it frame rate cap instead of V-Sync (in the control panel setting).

Ah yes now I see the light. That is exactly how I have mine setup right now. Thank you! I kinda wish Nvidia just made it a bit more clear for g-sync noobs like me. Just say always disable vsync in games and off you go.

nVidia be clear - YEAH RIGHT!  It would also be nice if nVidia was clear that when you have TWO of these monitors hooked up that your video card won't downclock to low idle like it should.  Been trying to figure out why my system all of a sudden started idling at 40c instead of the usual 28-30c - figuring I had a loop issue then noticing my card "idling" at 900+mhz!   Only way I could get it to downclock was set one monitor to 60Hz and the other to 120Hz at the desktop.

Yep Wacky is correct with how the VSync option works with GSync. With VSync off, GSync will stop working once game FPS passes the monitor's refresh rate and re-introduce screen tearing. It is merely a personal preference with if you wish to cap the FPS with traditional VSync if the game does exceed 144 FPS or not. I have VSync ON so that I will always be tear free.
