Please forgive me if this comes across as a stupid question.  I know very little about networking and any help would be greatly appreciated.

Here is my situation:  I had a stand alone WIFI router.  I am not all that happy with it since it seems to have to be re booted more often than I feel it should be.  I upgraded my TWC internet service and they gave me a new cable router that has Wi-Fi built into it.  It works pretty well but the range is a bit limited.  I am adding an addition onto my house that will be a garage/workshop with a new master bedroom suite above it.  I cant receive the WIFI signal in the new addition. My home will be about 4000 sq. ft. when it is all finished.

So I tried to hook up the old WIFI router in another part of the house to cover the new addition but it doesn't seem to work.  It says that it is connected but I can't access the internet with it.  I have tested it with both my phone and my laptop.

So what am I missing?
Can I have two WIFI routers on the same network? If so, How do I configure it?

How do I access the second router's interface? Does a setting need to be changed? If I type in 192.168.0.1 I get the TWC router.  What do I type to access the secondary router's interface?  It is not showing up in the network map so I can't see it's IP address.

Can I just get a WIFI extender to work with the TWC router and if so, any recommendations?

I am not home in front of the routers at the moment.  I will provide model numbers when I can.

Thanking you all in advance.

    This what I use  >>  http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833122483

Takes a min to setup and works pretty good.  I connected it to my cable modem and have it plugged in to an outlet on the opposite end of the house where my modems signal didn't quite reach.  Been using it for about 2 yrs now.

I have 2 of these super easy set set up follow instructions (I found using my phone easiest) Anyway an extender I think would work.

You can have 2 or more WiFi access points on the same network. But you must configure them with different IPs and different names, and deactivate DHCP. You also need an Ethernet switch/router.

Wifi routers are often set at 192.168.0.1. Two devices cannot have the same IP ! IPs and WiFi network names must not conflict each other.

Connect the first one only, and configure it as access point (IP, name, channel, etc., look for options in browser interface). For example 192.168.0.1, and WiFi1. Disconnect it. Connect the second one. Configure it. For example 192.168.0.2, and WiFi2. Now, you can connect your two WiFi access points to your switch.

You must disable DHCP on your access points ! DHCP must be activated on the modem/switch/router only.

You must configure 2 networks on your WiFi devices, so they will connect to the best signal, depending on the location you move them.

This is what I did at home, and it works like a charm : modem/router/4-port switch with DHCP, 2x 8-port switches and 2x WiFi access points (total 34 devices at home, 50% throught WiFi !). DHCP is activated only on the primary switch router, and used with IP reservation (the best way to use DHCP, and to avoid unwanted connections to my network).

why make it simple when it can be complicated ????

Don't forget that on windows 7 and up you have to have a windows password to log in to your desktop or the connection will fail. If you have roaming sensitivity on the device connecting to the access point, set it to highest and it will auto search for the best connection and connect it for you as you move.

No. A desktop password is *not* needed, even with Win10. Verify it by just creating a local account without password : you *can* access your network, and settings are machine related, not user related. Desktop passwords are needed for shared resources access control and remote desktop.

    Yes. It's a cool feature.
