I waterblock my video cards and when something comes along that's 50% faster I upgrade and put the old card on ebay. 10 years... I still have an old S3 2MB video card that came with my Pentium desktop. I still have my old 8800GTX.... Somewhere... OK Ten years in insane, just NO.

Dunno. I have a GTX 480 FTW Hydrocopper that still works today. It just doesn't get cold enough to justify using it. I also had a Titan Black Hydro that blew up ~3 months outside its 2-year warranty.

If someone is going to spend near $1k on a GPU, it's nice to have the 10 year insurance. But it probably doesn't make sense for a $300 card, that money could just buy a better performing model instead. For my EVGA 1080 Ti hydrocopper it cost $30 to upgrade to a 5 year warranty, and another $30 to upgrade that to 10 years... given the cost of the card that seems a fair value to me. But for an EVGA 3090 hydro that costs nearly $2k, it seems a freaking steal.

But in 10 years, what is going to have an equivalent performance to a 3090 hydro?   They don't give you something with an equivalent value, they give you something with an equivalent performance.  The hydro part won't even be a consideration to EVGA.  In 10 years, you aren't going to want to exchange for a card with the same performance of a 10-year-old card.  It's a wash at that point.  I can't see anything greater than 5 years being valuable for a video card exchange option.

A 10-year-old video card is essentially worthless.  Exchanging something which is now worthless on the used card market due to poor performance, for something else of "equal performance" means that you are getting something which is worthless; what's the point?  Who would even hassle with the RMA procedure?  I don't do the warranty thing, but if I did, 5 years would be my max choice.

The difference for that 5 extra years is still $30 though, is it not? There's no shortage of people that post in these forums that had a GPU die 1-3 months outside warranty, so what's the odds it dies at 5 years and a few months? For $30 you get the peace of mind that it doesn't matter, and even the cheapest equivalent performance card is going to be worth more than $30 anyhow.

As for usefulness, there's a lot of uses for a budget GPU. I have a 750 Ti doing a lot of grunt work hosting a bunch of VMs on another rig, and I had to throw an even older GPU into my father's desktop since his GPU fan failed but it doesn't have an IGP.

If you know you are going to run that gpu into the ground for a decade then yes. If you upgrade every generation, two or three then no.

I purchased the 10 yr. for my 2080 XC2 Ultra, 2 years and still going...

I will say I have a lot of Lifetime Warranty Hardware from EVGA, I RMA'd a 10 yr. old GTX285 FTW, and got a new card.
So Yeah, it's worth it. Still have 2 of them original from 2009. Did a lot of folding, and benchmarking, and playing DayZ. and Crysis.
were originally a 3-Way SLI config. still running 2-way in a EVGA 780i lifetime warranty.

My GTX780 FTW died beyond warranty. and sadly did not purchase the 10yr.
I abused that card with 3000+ hours of gaming, and benchmarking, and other stuff. over 1000 hours of BETA DayZ
It died while playing "Star Citizen BETA" which I believe is what killed it 2 years ago.

My son killed 2 8800GTS 512s from excessive use, several years old. Lifetime Warranty, but failed to register in time.

Of all the EVGA cards and boards I have purchased can't even count them, only 4 cards have died over 15 year period. , but for good reason, really well used.

I forgot to purchase it for my X99 motherboard, but it's 6 years old now. 4 more years, and won't be worth it... Daily driver..

My 780TI died last summer and, while I was thinking of getting an upgrade, it was still running modern games solidly (not on Ultra, obvs).
If I had purchased the warranty, I could at least of had a replacement to use while waiting for the 3080 to drop.  Convinced me to buy the 10 year on my wife's new 3070.

Re: Opinions: Is the 10 year warranty worth it? 2021/06/07 16:14:14 (permalink)
Having read over this ongoing thread (my trade-up and extended warranty option ends today), I eventually came to the conclusion that I should get the 10-year on my RTX 3060.  As others have said, it really depends on what you plan to do with your GPU a few years down the road.

For myself, the RTX 3060 12GB isn't a high-end card but it does OK now on my 1440p monitor.  A few years from now, I'll be replacing the GTX 960 2GB in my media center computer on a 4K TV with this GPU.  It'll be an old GPU by then sure, but the 3060 is a significant upgrade from a 960.

So to me the 10-year for $40 makes sense.  If it should die 7 years from now, chance are anything that EVGA sends me will be better than what I have now for performance.  If you have a 70 or 80 series card you'd likely want to buy something newer by then anyway to keep up with the latest games (and not lose as much value on your purchase) nor settle for a 60 series replacement 7yr from now.  For me, I already have a 60 series.

Good Luck

It might be worth it for the 30 series cards since a handful of them reported issues with the capacitors on the boards.

10 years seem overkill. 5 is a good middle ground and sounds about right for an upgrade cycle.

3 years is more than enough. That's about how often I upgrade.

Normally, I think no warranty is worth the cost.

But, given the shortage of available cards, the warranty is more than just a repair or replace. It offsets an availability problem. So, the question I would ask myself is how long do I think the shortage of available cards will be a problem. I think no more than a five year warranty is worth it.

I would say 5 year warranty is plenty. In 10 years like most other people said you are likely going to want an excuse to upgrade unless you know for a fact you will be keeping the card long term. Personally i would stick w 5
