I have a 790i SLI that was working well when the liquid cooling went out (no leak, pump stopped). It obviously was causing overheating but would stay on and boot correctly before overheating.

I bought a Cooler Master Hyper 212 Plus and of course that means I had to take the motherboard out to put the backing plate on.  Did that and getting a FF code (never gets past FF).

I checked the power connections (big and 8 pin), took out the battery, pushed on the BIOS chip, changed out the memory (only one plugged in now), took off the cooler and re-seated the CPU and the motherboard is now out with only the power connected on a wood table and still posts FF only.  I also noted that the memory pwr light is yellow and the CPU hot light is instantly red. Stby pwer is blue and main pwr is green.

Any ideas beyond getting a new motherboard/cpu?

FF is normal if it appears after POST.  But it is not normal to go the FF instantly and never go to anything else.  The POST starts with FF and ends with FF and if it displays no other numbers/letters in between, that is a bad sign.

...and the CPU hot light is instantly red.

Does it have a cooler on the CPU when this happens, or does this happen when you run bare-bones with no cooler?  If you have a cooler installed and you see a red processor hot light instantly, I would think your CPU is dead.  I got an instant red processor hot light on my 780i once when I ruined a CPU.

Hello and Welcome to the EVGA Forums

Let try remove all USB devices plugs and re seat CPU again properly! Make sure CPU Cooler fan plug is right position not off set 4 Pins! Do reset default CMOS Jumper move jumper to 1 and 2 then remove batteries let rest for 10mins and after 10 mins try insert batteries and move back pin jumper to 2 and 3 to normal boot up! Don't put back all USB plugs but do use plug keyboard only as you need access to BIOS setting! Try test boot up if system is on but stop at FF do try press and hold power button for few sec til it will force reset!!
I have this problem and hope it should work for your!!
Please post us back how getting on

EDIT> Sorry to Forget to tell you make sure remove PSU from the wall before doing above!!!

    Try doing the following:

    1) Unplug your PSU. Hold down the PC start button for 10 seconds.
    2) Remove the MB battery, and keep it out for 10 minutes.
    3) Reinstall your battery.
    4) Clear your CMOS.
    5) Plug the PSU back in.
    6) Boot into your BIOS, and select Optimize BIOS Settings, then save, and exit your BIOS.

I took it out of the case and had absolutely nothing plugged in except the power, one stick of memory and tried with the cooler on and off (I checked the CPU, never really got super hot, just warm - but since it is still trying to do the first step of POST, the CPU shouldn't be working at all). Even tried with the CPU out and got the same result - instant FF and nothing more.

I am thinking that means the MOBO is dead (and since it is old, time for a new mobo and CPU).

Tried all of that early on. BTW, once I put it all back together (mobo in, all power hooked up, cooler on, no cards or USB inserted) it still just does FF.

thanks to all for the ideas.

might have borked the cpu. did it ever shut off when the pump went bad? provided the cpu thermal protection is is enabled in the bios it should not have burnt up.
do you have another 775 cpu you can try, even a celeron or p4 just to test the board. you can also find some 775 cpu's in the market place.

Thanks all - agree it is likely the MOBO but agree it could be the CPU. Either way, I have gone to a new MOBO and CPU since both are so old and certainly no easy fix.  Thanks again - great inputs!
