780i Sli  (132-ck-nf78)

Currently running an INtell Q6600 - Kentsfield - but I think my chip is fried  - need to swap it out.  I've had a suggestion for a Q9550

What do others think?

a)  What's the best bang for the buck in the 755 class right now
b)  Am I going to have to reload the OS - I want to avoide that - any issues with just doing a CPU swap?

Thanks guys

The Q9550 is only $179.99 at Microcenter.

I'm not near a microcenter and they don't sell it online :(  but will find it somewhere

Can I just do a swap - will I need to do anything else to my rig to get it to accept the newe chip?

Theoretically no, but you'll have to watch the voltages in the bios just to be sure.

    System: 7820X - MSI X299 Carbon AC - G.Skill 32Gb TridentZ 3200 - EVGA 1080 Ti - 500 Gb Samsung 970 EVO , 2Tb Crucial MX500, 2Tb, 3Tb, 4Tb Seagate - Seasonic 1000W Prime - Creative Sound Blaster Z - Windows 10 Pro 64 - Phanteks Enthoo Primo - Edifier S530D - Acer Predator XB271HU (1440p)

    Watercooling loop: Heatkiller CPU - EK 1080 Ti - Swiftech MCP 655 with EK X-Top v2 - XSPC reservoir - Alphacool 480 x2

The Q9550 is the best for your money, but you can get a qx9650 extreme for about $370 on ebay, or if you want to go all out there is a QX9770 listed for $600.

Clear the CMOS before install. On first boot, go into Bios and load Default settings to be safe. Do not have to reinstall OS.

Sorry to hear on the Q6600 mine has been good to me for a long time.

Sometimes I come across old 780i motherboards on auction sites. That is the only way you'll find one.

AMD Ryzen 9 7950X,  Corsair Mp700 Pro M.2, 64GB Corsair Dominator Titanium DDR5  X670E Steel Legend, MSI RTX 4090 Associate Code: H5U80QBH6BH0AXF. I am NOT an employee of EVGA
