"Going back to driver 306.23 corrects this issue". I had these driver crashes and display lockups with the earlier version of the display driver.

I don't get BSODs. There is really no way to know whether the mobo is at fault, mobo BIOS, graphics driver, whatever. With the current set of software tools and without duplicate parts to swop out, I cannot isolate the problem. I am not going to rma the mobo and rebuild my entire system when there is no indication it is the mobo.

The new graphics card is better. It runs about 10 degrees cooler than the original. The gpu clock and mem clock seem much more responsive to loads and seem to work in concert, which I had not seen before with the old card. I think it is a keeper. I did stress test the new graphics card with OC scanner and after 6 minutes got the familiar display lockup :(.  This was with a new Windows install.

I am now running PCIe 2 and sofar it's ok. I can live with that if I have to.

I guess we can consider this thread solved then.

Another +1. I know RMA'ing a motherboard sucks. I've done it once, but it was worth it. Of course I did it with EVGA, and they advance cross-shipped me the board. To this day I don't know a more helpful company than this one. I'm glad your new card is working better though, sad to see your system isnt at its best :( Good luck with Asus if you do decide, let us know if this story has a happy ending later.

Re:GTX 670 FTW - crashing, seems to be related to pcie x 16 compatibility? 2013/08/18 12:19:32 (permalink)
I just began searching for this topic as I had a similar issue. I bought an ASUS DSX soundcard and was using it in the 2nd PCIE slot on my P8Z77-V / Thunderbolt motherboard. I ran GPU-Z and noticed it showed PCIE 2.0 x16 for my EVGA GTX 670 FTW. Naturally I was curious and somewhat confused, a check in the BIOS revealed it was on Auto selection and would randomly reboot with 3.0 / 2.0 running. There seemed no real reason for it and I eventually removed the soundcard and got the PCI version (no separate power plug needed) but I am buying another GTX 670 to SLI with and I'll report back what I find. I suspect it will again revert from 3.0 to 2.0 for really no reason.

Based on what I've read here it seems the motherboard is just not that bright, the BIOS or something is off. This case is not isolated if I have it happening also. Now when I forced Gen3 then it did seem stable and to run, but I don't know what will happen when I try SLI yet. Wish me luck......

PS This is of course before the revision 2003 BIOS came out so perhaps it's not as finicky?

I just got the SLI config running. Seems stable and no issues with the 3.0 vs 2.0 PCIE

I've been facing the very same issue with my Gigabyte GTX 670 2GB.
After I tried almost everything possible, I've changed to PCI-E GEN2 in BIOS (from AUTO), and pc is working flawlessly.
I guess it some compatibility issue with this card. BTW, I have a new GigaByte X470 AORUS ULTRA GAMING (rev. 1.0) mobo, so it's definitely not some old chipset problem.

P.S I'm working out with Nvidia L2 support team, will try to get some answers from them.

This thread is six years old... I highly doubt the OP still has this issue.

Nevertheless, the issue exists! And I'm the living proof for that..

It sounds like your card just has a noisy 8GT bus, nothing evga or nvidia can do for you.

What do you mean noisy? The issue is replicated with another same GTX 670 card (I've 2 identical).
So seems it is some mobo/chipset compatibility issue..
