Hi All,

In 2010 JeffreyHam helped me diagnose and fix a memory timing issue with my computer that was causing random hard resets.  He was able to help me get a machine that frustrated me greatly running smoothly.

Recently I had the smart idea to upgrade that same machine (from 32bit Vista) to the new Windows 8 RC x64, as well as install new memory and a fresh hard drive. I swapped out my old 2x2GB Patriot PDC34G1333LLK  DDR3 RAM with a pair of 2x4GB G.Skill Sniper F3-10666CL9D-8GBSR. The new memory was stable in Vista 32bit but only half was recognized (4gb). Windows 8 RC x64 recognizes all 8GB of course but unfortunately the machine freezes up every now and then and is generally unstable again.

I have been browsing this forum and others looking for a solution but have come up blank. I tried playing around with my timings and increasing the voltage to the memory but haven't been able to get the computer stable again. Any chance anyone has any ideas of what I could try next? Thanks in advance.

Have you tried the memory voltage at 1.65 or higher?
This is my 790i FTW. I'm not running SLI though:

Not sure, but  you are running a really old version of Bios.  You said you are on P06, well, I believe the current version is P10.  It includes P07, P08, P09, and P10.  I think this will make a difference.  To me it looks like you are trying to get it running smoothe on Stock settings.  If not, try to get it smoothe on stock before overclocking.  You can get the P10 Bios in the EVGA Download center.

You are running BIOS version P06....which is pretty old.  You may want to flash your BIOS.  Additionally, there is no guarantee that 4GB RAM modules will run on the 790i series boards.  Some run it well....some don't.  As I am sure that you are aware, the board "officially" supports 2GB RAM modules per slot.  I would install the 8GB modules in the black slots, and manually set the timings and voltage to the manufacturer's recommended settings.  If adjusting the timings and voltage up and down within a few settings of what the manufacture suggests does not work, it may be that your memory controller will not run 4GB modules of what you have purchased.

Yep, mine are in the black slots. This link was a bit of a help for me: http://forums.evga.com/tm.aspx?m=127243&high=wanna+run+8gb

Thanks for the responses. I have read that thread about running 8GB on the 790i Ultra and it is helpful. I moved my sticks to the black slots after reading those posts.

I had not tried going above 1.6V prior to my post since the manufacturers rated voltage was 1.5V for these sticks however I did try 1.65V just a minute ago and it still froze up after a few minutes.

I am going to flash my BIOS and see if that has any effect on the issue. I am not sure what effect it could have but it is worth a shot.

If it doesn't fix the problem, I will probably just buy the two memory sticks you linked rscott and see if I have better luck with them.

I will let you guys know how it turns out!

You will have to run the memory voltage over the rated spec to get it to work on your board.

don't worry, it won't hurt the ram

I don't think that the 790i will play well with the RAM you bought. Very few people have been able to get low-voltage RAM to run dependably on the 790 series motherboards. I had trouble with 1.6 V ram, and you are trying to run 1.5 V RAM. That RAM is made for the newest chipsets (Sandy Bridge/Ivy Bridge/AMD AM3).

Check out this thread that I posted in (JeffreyHam was involved at the beginning of the thread, as well)

I personally used Patriot PSD34G16002H, which are rated at 1.7 V. Currently, they are deactivated on Newegg.
There was also a Kingston model KHX1600C9D3K2/8GX which was reported to work very well. They are rated at 1.65 V, which means that they should be able to be used with the newest chipsets if you ever upgraded. You should return the ones you bought and purchase these instead.
    KHX1600C9D3K2/8GX
Currently $34.99 for 8 GB after mail-in rebate (49.99 regularly).
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820104173
There were some who were able to run 2 of those kits, for a total of 16 GB, but while incredibly awesome, this is not necessary and difficult to accomplish, from what they said. You had to flash the MB with an XFX brand BIOS instead of the EVGA BIOS.

Return the RAM you bought, if possible, and buy the Kingston KHX1600C9D3K2/8GX.

Try setting the "Maximum Payload Size" to "1024" or "512" in the BIOS under PnP/PCI Configuration.  edit: Try messing around with the values and see how it works out for you.  I did have a couple freezes, but this seems to have greatly helped.  I dropped it to 512 for now on my system, to see if I can eliminate them entirely.

This worked wonders for me and seemed to fix my freezing.  My theory is that modern GPUs combined with modern SSDs combined with Microsoft's Windows 790i ultra storage controller drivers are causing the PCI express lane to overload and freeze up.

This did slightly lower my SSD performance, but only in benchmarks, I don't really notice any difference during use, except for the fact it no longer hangs and needs to be rebooted!

For years and years I tried everything; RAM, BIOS settings, replacing components and this seemed to finally fix (or greatly help) the issue.  Obviously make sure your voltages and timings check out as well, or that can cause stability issues.

    Good luck!

I realize many of these are old, it doesn’t matter, they still show up on a google search and this info would have helped me immensely. Everyone is focused on the bios template, which as far as I see, doesn’t even have that setting in it. So many people have/had freezing, this could help. This mobo with a qx9650 or 9770 is still a pretty fast pc.

No, I am not using SLI. I was having freezes and I searched for 790i ultra freezing or something like that.

The jmicron controller on the 790i ultra uses the pci-e lane I have read as well btw.

I'm actually having a similar issue with my mobo as well related to freezing also, and actually my next test was going to be the memory. I took it off of the built in profile settings and resorted to automatic mode.

Good luck, if that doesn’t work you may have to go manual for voltages and timings.
