Hy There :) I´m going up to build up a new rig and so i decided to take what i have - my evga - sr2 . it stood nearly 3 years arround in the original box(bought it when it show up on market) and now i decided to make it run. What i have now : Case: Aerocool StrikeX ST (black) Mainboard: Evga-SR2 (already mounted) My Plans for shopping: 4x GTX 295 (coop) - 2 x Quad SLI - price is arround 130€ (new) in ebay 24Gb Ram - not sure if these ones will work with the sr-2 (this ones: ) 2x Used Quad Xeons ( 3,33Ghz ) 1x PSU .. think that the thermaltake 1200w will be not enough for such rig, maybe the evga supernova psu (1500w) should do the work. My question is - what do you think -> big fail with the graphic cars , ... i owned them years ago as they came out as the first graphic card with 2 gpu´s , and i was really happy (had them in Quad sli) Nice greets from Austria Sascha :)
Mainboard: Evga SR-2 (Bios A54) CPU: 2xIntel Xeon X5660 Cooling: 2 x Scythe Mugen 4 Heatsinks Ram: 6 x 4GB G.Skill Ripjaws 1600Mhz (Tripple) Graphics: 4 x Evga 295GTX Coop (8 GPU)!PSU: Lepa 1600 Watt PSU Case: Aerocool Strike X ST Black Cool:Air=12xScythe Slipstream Slim2000rpm,.. Win7 64Bit

I would rather run one nice gpu than 4. Sometimes the software doesn't make use of the extra gpus. For that price you could get an ati 7990 and if you ever wanted more you could add another one. I have one in my sr2 and its a beast. I bought it when it first came out and paid over 700 for it. Theyre cheaper now. Also the neat part about that specific gpu is you can run any 7900 series gpu in crossfire with it. I haven't tried it and havent had the need. With my cpus at 3.0ghz l5520 cpus stock 2.26 and that card there isnt a game I haven't been able to run on the highest settings. I actually bought the first nvidia dual gpu card available on the market. It was a 7950gx2 liquid cooled it and had my fun. Went to an ati 4870x2 dual gpu now im with the 7990. 6gb vram 950mhz gpus it's ridiculous how fast technology is evolving. Let us know what you go with. Also I have a 1050 ultra power supply and I dont have a single hiccup power wise.

Hmm i thought about the 295 because they are really "cheap" now, yes the dont have ddr5 and they dont have ultimate memory like the titans with 6gb oO, but the quad sli i used years ago on my evga 790i ftw was enourmos. every game on highest settings. But i thought more about 3d animations - inventor, 3dsmax and such things - dont know if they all use cuda technologie. 4 gtx295 would cost as much as one "up to date graphic card" for example the 770gtx,.. could expand with 2,.. but i think the old 295 would do their job as well :). Dont know if anybody here used 4 of them, i just have seen single gpu´s in 4way sli, but 2 quad sli graphic cards on the sr-2 hmm ? But im going to do some researches about your mentioned card :), i must say, nvidia cards were my favourites today

I'm sure it can be done. I've seen all sorts of insane graphic setups on these boards. I've always been a fan of nvidia but i've trudged off to ati. yeah the radeon 7990 is pretty insane. I like it, and it actually stays cool believe it or not. That's the card in my picture i was stunned when i got it. I thought my previous 4870x2 was big. it even comes with a stand to hold it up in your case but mine seems to be fine without it. btw idk how but i guess i have two accounts. the previous one i use through my phone. but also look at the direct x of the model you plan on running. the newer cards are running direct x 11. I'm not too sure how many games use direct x 11 but it's future proofing you for some time until 12 comes out.

I found that with my system getting tighter than 8-8-8-21 made things unstable at 1600mhz (200fsb). I've had good luck with the gskill ripjaws at 9-9-9-24 4gb 1600mhz, and they don't cost much, I paid $86 for 4 sticks last x-mas off ebay. My board is also unhappy above 1.66vdimm. If you can, buy a X56** cpu as they have much better memory controllers. I had a blackhawk ultra case, inside it is nearly identical to the aerocool. You can fit a nice 140mm by 2 or 3 rad up there on top. If you do buy a powersupply, keep in mind how freakin long the power cables need to be to reach all the way up to the cdrom bays, and the top vrm 8pin/6pin area. In the end I sold the blackhawk and sr2 to my brother and built a new on with a PC-D8000 case because of the cabling issue, and lack of area for mounting rads. I noticed the biggest differnce in my system was getting the Acera and SSDs for boot. Daily working, game load times, CAD, all so much faster. Just somthing simple like 5x 64gb C300 like I have will give you over 650mb/s off ich10r

@jdub69 i have found your graphic card -> you´re a nerd :D - they cost around 700€ oO - but its an insane card !
@micahiggs -> ok thats good to hear - im going to look after that, as you said in such big deep cases its wisely to take a look at the length of the cables too :).

air cooling to get to those specs will be very hard. i know air cooling has advacned siginificantly but water cooling can't beat it. please post pics. as far as the cpus go if you want you can get two intel xeon 5639 6 cores. but they are only at 2.13 but since you're overclocking them that would be perfect. i would go with them if i were you because you can always upgrade when they prices drop which they will in 6 months i'm very sure. trust me you can get a pair for 150 easy. you could proably bump them up to a reasonable clock on air probably close to 3ghz. i have my l5520's at 3.2ghz and when i run prime 95 for an hour my cpu socket temp hits 70. the cpu die and the socket temperature are different. my cpu's actual die temp only hit 62c watercooling does a magnificent job but i wish there was something they could make to draw all the heat from the back plates. if they could the cpu socket temperature would significanly drop. i have to slide on asus chpiset fans one above cpu0 and one below cpu1. it actually helped a lot and decreased the temperature 4-5c. you can still get them but i had so many asus boards that i was able to come up with two and they fit fine on the fins on the chipset. i have the WORST liquid cooling besides those enclosed units. problem is that i have a p500 pump from thermal take and i read they're complete garbage. since the flow rate is so slow it takes time for the water to circulate but i just ordered a new reservoir and a vp655 pump from alphacool that produces up to 1500 l/h. big improvement over my claimed 500 but i'm sure now it's only around 2 to 300. i've had it since i was 15 or 16 years old and it still works and now i'm 23. i'm paranoid about it going and i definitely don't want it to go bad on this rig. this cooling system served me well though. i built over 10 computers with the liquid cooling (Case was Kandalf LCS) and the last one was an asus rampage III extreme with i7 930 and i had that cpu to 4.2ghz. stable ran prime95 and a couple of other stress testing programs. problem with this cooling loop now is that theres two cpus and i need a higher flow rate. comes here friday can't want to drop my temps down. i'm hoping 10c that's alot but going from 500l/h to 1500 should do the trick with my 360mm radiator. but definitely look up the 5639 xeon i'm about to get two for mine as well.

can't wait to see the setup. When i get my six cores and i get my new pump and reservoir setup and overclock the hell out of this thing i want to benchmark it. I know i don't have 4 titans running in sli but i'm curious to see how it performs. Long time ago, believe it or not i was obsessed with benchmarking and a computer i had built was under a record holder. i mean considering i was 18 and pretty much spent all of my cash on my computer i thought that was pretty sweet. of course now i'm sure people are scoring crazy crazy stuff with all this awesome hardware out. hope you get that exchange sorted out soon.

You do realize that 4xGTX295 combined will get annihilated by a single GTX660 at about 1/4 of the power consumption and 1/4 noise, right? A single big fan on the side panel will be much, much quieter and shift more air than 9 smaller fans. Make sure you put dust filters on the side, or every heatsink will get clogged with dust very quickly even in a reasonably clean environment. You haven't got a snowflake's chance in hell with getting past 4GHz properly stably with X5650s - you will find that past about 180MHz bclk the frequencies start to get very unstable, and no voltage tweak will do anything to stabilize it. At this point, you might find things start to get slightly slower rather than faster as you keep bumping up the clock, right up to the point where it starts erroring out. Past 1333MHz RAM speed, you will start to lose DIMMs - the last bank on each CPU won't get detected at POST. At 166 bclk you can compensate for that by reducing the RAM multiplier to 1066 to get the RAM to 1333 with 166 bclk. Past that you would need to get to 220 bclk (no chance) to get your RAM to 1333 (800 setting on multiplier). In other words, past 166 bclk you will start losing RAM performance, either through losing banks or reducing the RAM clock speed. Make sure you get dual-ranked registered RAM modules, or what you manage to achieve will likely be even less thank this.

Sounds like someone just had a bad run with there SR2. I have 3xSR2's and all run above 195 bclk without any instability. Two of the 3 can run 200 BCLK without frequency spikes under full load 24/7 365.

@ gordan79Your maybe right: One new age graphic card would maybe in some cases outperform 4 gtx (2 x Quad Sli´s) - BUT its just one, and a single gpu :) , 2 of them would cost as twice as mine 4. I know the gtx 295, had 2 of them in my first build before, and the performance is great - yeah the suck power as hell, but in my case it doesnt matter. And why i choosed 9 fans instead of one big -> the rpm´s -> , and the mounting position. A big fan would place in the middle of the sidedoor, .. the graphic cards arent placed in the middle of the board, so the main airflow would only "touch" them. With 9 of them, i have at least 4 hitting the graphic cards directly :). So thats why i decided for 9 :D. Loudness isnt a matter, sr-2 is a server board :), and servers are normaly more louder. And if i have 4 Gtx i give up the route of "silent pc´s" :) - i think you could admit that ^^.

@TheWolf I have had 3 SR-2s and they all behave very closely to what I described. I suspect the difference isn't in the motherboards but in how thoroughly we test, what tools we use, and what our criteria for "stable" is. Did you OCCT it for 24 hours with small, large and linpack tests each? Did you then re-test with something like suitably sized randomly generated files on tmpfs with multi-threaded hashing tests on Linux? @Code Dynamics I dare say you should compare against a single modern GPU vs. your 8. A single new GPU will give you better performance than your 8 old ones, not to mention 8x less power draw and heat generation. And since a GTX680 (at least 50% faster than your 8 GPUs combined assuming 100% SLI scaling, which you won't get) can be had for < £200 on eBay and a GTX660 for substantially less, I dare say it would have been cheaper than 4x GTX295s. I just don't see the logic behind what you're doing, unless a part of your plan is to use the machine as a room heater over the winter.

@gordan, Yes newer technologie is better than the older one :) but i want to go on with this setup. After its working and i get some benches :) i could step up to another setup anyway :) My goal was 2 Quad Sli´s - and the 680 isnt able for quad setups ;). maybe one better than old quads but thats not my plan ! Im sure i could get power out of it - not only heat for the winter ;). When im benching i will post my results :).

2xGTX295 = quad SLI. I'm not sure what you propose to achieve with dual-quad SLI - I'm not convinced you will be able to even drive 2 monitors in a single app with quad-SLI on each. It just seems... odd. You could always get some PCIe x16 ribbon cables and get another 3 GTX295s in there (you'd have to figure out where to suspend them inside the case) if you really wanted to go to for maximum OTT. I was actually pondering a 7xGTX690 setup for some number-crunching simulation work, but getting a PSU that can handle that, a case that can house it, and a cooling system that can handle that kind of heat dissipation is non-trivial.

@gordan, i have 4 of them -> 4xgtx295 = 2 x 2 Quad SLI ;) im not soo bad at math´s if you think so If you dont like my setup you could ignore it and call me an odd pc enthusiast the best what you can do, because im not going to make changes for that setup,i started, just because someone says its "odd/hopeless" - im a electric-technician, car mechanic, and software developer - and headache is my adrenalin to become better in things i do . you made your builds and learned from it, so be so kind and let others learn it by their own way without put someone down. In my opinion: Simple working plug and play systems - well if i like that i would buy LEGO - and not a customized machine :), where i choose the components of it, and also headache that maybe comes with it :) Nice greets from austria Sascha

Not really a veteran, just someone that likes a challenge and folds for team EVGA. Folding is a great stress test for the PC and is important to finding cures for many of todays illnesses. Here is one of my first post/ threads about my experinces with my 1st SR2. I've had 5 SR2's, 2 had problems and were returned. I still have the 3 and there all still in use to fold 24/7.

Assuming one of those boards is still the one you got from me I can vouch for 200bclk. I never had any problems unless trying to go above 200. And it folded 24/7 bigadv units when I had it. Amazing boards to own and play with. I miss it dearly. But I know it's done more good where it's at than what I could have done with it.
Yeap still have your beloved A1 SR2 and the ECP V3. The other 2 are A2 rev boards, Its still a great folder and overclocker. Thanks for passing it on to me.

That's great the extra multiplier will get you 1 step closer to the OC your looking for. Nothing like getting a extra muti for the same price!

Yeah wolf is right, these boards are stable with the right settings. He helped me out alot with mine and its running great at 195bclck. Whenever i try to go higher i have sound issues with the board so i just leave it there. Sheesh those heatsinks look hella hard to mount. My watercooling was sooooo easy to setup. I just used the other back brackets supplied with the motherboard and used the hardware that came with both of my alphacool waterblocks. it was really simple to setup. I keep trying to post pics but i keep getting errors! I don't have the pics uploaded anywhere so i'm trying to upload them from my computer. I resized the images and everything.... I ordered a blue/clear side panel for my case to show it off a bit, should be getting it this week. I also got my ps3 controller working via bluetooth so now i can enjoy all my games wirelessly. Also put my wheels on my case and it makes it a breeze to work on. i can rotate the case with one finger. You really can't go wrong with this board, it's such a beast.
