Hello all.

i was hoping someone might of had experience of this, an have solution, or even just general advice.

When i leave my pc idle, and only then, i got a BSOD event that triggers the pc to restart. if i turn off automatic restart on system failure i just come back to a black screen.
This happens for me on any nvidia driver past 391.01 ( Nvidia support told me to try this one ) makes me think they are aware of an issue with drivers past this point.

They tried to get me to run a notmyfault command, this just causes a blue screen as soon as i hit enter to run the program.

i have used whocrashed to identify the Nvidia driver as the cause, and blue screen view to see its a kmode exception.
It now has got to the point they are trying to get me to re-seat the gpu and check for dust. These drivers and this card have does this with my current motherboard a asus maximus 10 hero, 2 gigabyte gaming 7's with 8700k, and it did it with my crosshair 6 hero and 1700x. ( when i switched from 1700x to 8700k i had unrelated issues with gigabyte mobo's and had to return to my amd board and cpu for a while hence the multiple systems i have found this issue with ) This also means the problem has endured through multiple fresh windows installs.

Nvidia have also suggested i try using the pc without precision x, but this is the only program that can control my fans properly i think? finding it difficult to have precision x uninstalled for to long without needing to use my pc properly.

i have seen some reports that this kmode exception is a fault in Nvidia's drivers conflicting with monitoring programs, but i feel like they are skirting the issue.

monitoring programs i have running are HWinfo, an precision x

i have ran disk checks, run multiple all night memory tests which show no fault.

Current system specs:

16gb corsair vengeance lpx 3200
Evga 1080ti ftw3 latest precision x at time of posting 6.2.7 currently on driver 398.36
Latest windows build all upto date at time of posting.
Evga 650w psu
256gb ssd 2tb hdd.

Any insight would be much appreciated

That has been an issue for some people relatively recently.

Uninstall LED Sync and Precision XOC and restart your PC..Then delete the Precision XOC and LED Sync folders located in the Program Files (x86)\EVGA folder..Then install an older version of Precision XOC (6.2.3 or slightly older)..Roll from there and see if it matters or not.

I would also uninstall HWinfo for the time being.

Well going back to precision X version 6.2.3 and removing HWinfo has so far, appeared to fix the issue. pretty weird. not exactly how i want my pc, but i can live with it for now. ( not sure which is the issue or if its the Nvidia driver that is at fault) might test further in the future.

Thanks for the advice @bob16314 this had been driving me crazy for a while now.

Will update this if the issue comes back.

AIDA64 will also cause this issue on many systems.  Yes, indeed it is the KMODE exception.

Work around? I don't use monitor sleep. This happens if the system has been idle. Typically I go do something,  come back hit a key or move the mouse and instant BSOD. The screen or system isn't asleep, it's just idling on the desktop. It's been from a couple of minutes to, a couple of hours. The time varies.

Same issue here on my sc2. returned the card to amazon and got a 1080ti ftw3 coming. Sadly I see it doesn’t matter the model and it just happens. Have tried 2 other cards (Strix 1080ti and msi gaming x with no issue)

Evga has been having a rough time this generation, the whole vrm/thermal pad fire issue, the hybrid kits bricking cards and the countless issues with specific cards.
I’m 3/3 when it comes to issues with their cards this gen, perhaps unlucky? :)
[1x evga 1080, 2x 1080ti sc2’s]
Returned all and purchased a 1080ti ftw3, the fact I have to cross my fingers for a working card is sad but here’s to hoping the ftw3 works.

(I haven’t even had a chance to try overclocking any of their cards they all seemed to have issues at default settings)
