The other night I tried updating my BIOS from 2.03 to 2.05 via the Windows batch file. I started by resetting my BIOS to default options, except for enabling the M.Socket3, so that I could launch Windows. An error I got then and continue to get now, unless I run as an Administrator, is an "Incorrect BIOS Image, Please download correct BIOS". I get this error in both Windows and UEFI. I was able to get by this error by running as an administrator, but it appears that it bricked my BIOS on switch 1 as my computer would restart every one second after powering on.

After a little bit of research, I discovered my mobo has a switch for 3 different BIOS. I didn't realize what caused my issue the first time, so I tried the same thing on BIOS 2. Before restarting my computer, the update process resulted in a "Error 317: Hardware sequencing failed. Make sure that you have access to the target flash area!. FTP Operation Failed." Upon restart the mobo would give F2/F9 error codes before failing to post.

After more research, I set my BIOS to 3, swapped the selector to switch 1/2 and tried to update to BIOS 2.03 instead. i had to run both as an admin. BIOS 2 will now power on and display an error '0d' code, with no other activity. BIOS 1 first gave an error "Unable to detect ME disabled", and asked if I wanted to proceed with the flash write operation. Upon doing so, BIOS 1 also gets the '0d' error code and no other activity.

Looking through the latest BIOS Update thread, it appears that several people have also had similar difficulties, and that I may need a new BIOS chip. I'm not sure what else I can try. BIOS 3 is the only switch that works (its set to BIOS Version 1.01 and unable to update). I have read that I may be able to create my own bootable flash utility, but I'm not sure how to go about this on Windows 10. And I would hate to brick BIOS 3.

Unfortunately my mobo warrarenty expired two months ago, and having to purchase a new one would be a big pain in the butt. My PC has a custom dual-loop for watercooling, so a new mobo would require a complete tear down of the system.

    Quick Update.

If I try to update to BIOS 1.03 or 1.04, I no longer get the "Incorrect BIOS Image, Please download correct BIOS" error in Windows. I simply have to run the batch file as an admin, and it updates "successfully". However...

Instead of BIOS 1 and 2 hanging on the '0d' code, both BIOS settings now will restart the computer every one second. Would it damage my motherboard/BIOS if I boot into UEFI with BIOS 3, swap the switch to BIOS 1 or 2, and attempt a BIOS update from UEFI?

Welp. I would of liked to try that with an earlier BIOS like 1.04.

I reinstalled Windows thinking it could be a windows/driver issue, but forgot to move the switch over and now all three are bricked. I feel like a dumbass. 🙄

In any case, I've ordered a z370 Classified K with a new CPU. I'll keep in mind your reply should this ever happen again! Thanks.

Sound almost like you are updating the Bios without first resetting the Bios back to the Default Settings.

I remember setting eveything back to default prior to my first attempt on BIOS 1. Minus enabling M.2 SOCKET3 so that I could launch Windows. BIOS 3 was for sure reset (except M.2 SOCKET3) as I spent several hours trying different solutions and resetting CMOS.

The official 2.05 update has several users who mention the update bricked their mobo's. I'm not upset except for my own ignorance in bricking BIOS 3.

One thing I found interesting was that in using both the Windows and UEFI update, the mobo would not recognize anything above BIOS 1.04 as an acceptable version to update to.

One thing I learned was to Not update the Bios in Windows any Version.
For Motherboards that do not have a process to update the Bios from within the Bios I use a USB Flash DOS Boot Drive.

Live and learn. I'll be doing that from now on, lol.

At least now I'll be tearing down my system and doing a small upgrade to system and the look of the case.
