Hi all, I am about to buy EVGA X99 Classified 151-HE-E999-KR mbo. I am interested in buying 2-3 gpus for data crunching(no gaming). I have looked into some gpus and selected Gigabyte GeForce GTX 1080 Ti 11GB AORUS and EVGA GeForce GTX 1080 Ti SC2 GAMING. The main criteria is cooling as the gpus will work for 24/7. I am interested in getting two EVGA Sc2 cards and a gigabyte Aorus card   . Since the aorus card is massive in size, so i want to know whether all the three card can fit in the board?? My second question is regarding operating system as i want to install ubuntu, so will the board be compatible with ubuntu 16.0.4 LTS, please.Thank you

All the gpu's will fit fine as long as you install the aorus below the two sc2's.

Out of curiosity why 2 EVGA cards and 1 Gigabyte? Why not 3x EVGA?

I really thought we are way past 3-slot VGAs, but these behemoths coming back with vengeance. All we need now is passive cooled 1080Ti like 6 slot monsters for GTX680. LOL

Anyone remember this GTX680 puppy:

Something to shout about for sure. :D

Good grief!  That's one passive heatsink, that's for sure.

Not as nutty as the fanless, leak free, ultra quiet gaming PC. lol

If you want serious number crunching buy the Nvidia Tesla p100 gpu ($13,000 each!).
They do make cheaper models though.

Thanks for all the answers. @Sajin, So i can go for these three cards in this configuration; in PCIe 1, Aorus being 3 slot card can be plugged in, as it has the biggest gap from the next pcie slot, and rest 2 Evga cards can be plugged in PCIe 04 and 05 slots. right ?

@ypsylon, I would love to have 3 Aorus cards as the cards have excellent reviews on newegg for cooling solution but since the card is massive in size and takes 03 slots so i am sure 03 of those cant fit in the board. Second best option is evga icx(02 slot card) so i chose 02 of those. I hope all these three can fit in.
@jfw06013, i am a poor guy and simply can't afford 13k$ cards :)

Man you'll have issues with any aircooled VGA in last slot. Conflict between heatsink and front I/O cables (and USB2.0 header if used) at the bottom of the board. I wait currently for waterblocks to validate if one slot card can fit in there (last slot), but I was unable to squeeze aircooled 1080FTW in last slot and plug the cables - no way.

1080Ti FE is smaller and there is more space between I/O header and heatsink but still not enough. Technically you can use slot 1, 3 and 5, but then top and middle card will compete for breathe of cool air. I would do everything possible to put Gigabyte card in slot 7, even modding heatsink a bit or using a riser. Man air cooled card sucks so much for space. Especially for number crunching fresh cool air is paramount.

P.S.

I thought that GTX680 will be interesting take on settling the issue why big is too big sometimes.  Still it looks epic - especially on a shelf!

@ypsylon, so whats the use of the last slot anyway ? Since this is my first experience of building a rig so the problem. It means only two cards, irrespective of whether 02 or 03 slot card, can be optimally plugged in the board in slot 1 and slot 04 as these are optimal slots i.e X16, all other are x8 and these slots will ensure enough maximum air flow.

Yep. The slots would be 1, 4, 6.

Despite still serious pain in my leg, to help you make the right choice I've grabbed my iPhone, flashlight, 1080Ti FE, put the case flat and snapped 5 pictures. Scale of the problem is pretty obvious...

Please note that FE cooler is the smallest heatsink possible. 1080FTW was literally touching the header itself.

Please ignore the wrong cabling, I've just grabbed I/O leads and plugged them in whatever order.

@ypsylon Thank you for your consideration and for all the effort to help, i really appreciate.
Here is my build. Can you please look into it. I have decided to go for 2 GPus and may be go to third one EVGA 1080Ti SC2 in future if required but for now i am limiting to 02 gpus. I have selected one Aorus and one EVGA 1080Ti SC2 (both with custom coolers). The main concern is the board and gpus so that they can fit in optimally. Kindly make suggestions in view of your experience. Thank you very much.

Not sure why you won't go with two of the same GPU.  It would be an eye sore and drive me nuts but hey, that's just me. lol

@GTXJackBauer To have some variety :). Actually my main concern is better cooling. By design, i like Aorus card so much and its cooling is excellent, probably the best out there, but the issue is its size as its 03 slot card so i cant put more than one in the board, otherwise i would hv chosen 2 same Aorus. The second best cooling option is Evga SC2 1080Ti so i have chosen that as the second card.BTW, Is there any disadvantage in getting diverse cards as they both have the same chipset 1080 Ti and only difference is cooling ??

Here's an option, although there are no dimensions listed for it.

Yes I know it's 20 pin, but I only did a quick search.

With cards you'll do fine. However I'm with GTX on this one. On same chip I would always pick two identical ones. It would drive me nuts just watching at two different heatsinks. Especially with all that RGB disease infesting PCs faster than Rachni conquering Council Space.

I can't watch too much because I feel tears in my eyes looking at these great prices. If that was possible in EU... 265$ for Classy, 300$ for Xeon  Brand New! How is that possible? Error... does not compute...

Disadvantage of two different cards of course is lack of SLI support (I know not important), you can run into issues with BIOS flashing - basically have to remove one of the cards before proceeding. Otherwise you should be fine.

@Howdy

Nice find. For the price its certainly worth the try.

I should have noted you might run into issues since each GPU comes with its own designated AIB partner's BIOS but I could be wrong.

Again, I would never look at a PC with two different GPUs.  It would make me cringe. lol  I look at PC's like the work of art that they are.

Thanks guys. After considering all your helpful suggestions and other factors, decided to get two EVGA 1080 Ti  SC2 cards. Its a two slot card and evga products have reputation of using high quality components. Only downside is that its out of stocks everywhere and nobody knows when will the next shipment from evga arrive and secondly evga has increased the price from 720 to 750$.

Glad to hear you're going with two matching GPUs.  I think it's a great idea tbh.

I'm sure they'll get stock of those GPUs but not sure when.

As for the price, the reason why it was lower was because it was a preorder discounted price.
