Do you want to switch an EVGA motherboard for an MSI one? Wow!. I've had lot's of motherboards, including ASUS, MSI, ECS etc, and the best and less problematic motherboard I've had has been my current E760, I'll be buying this brand till I have a reason not to do it anymore (and I buy them from Uruguay). I thinks it's an incredible mobo, and the ONLY problem I've seen on bios releases has been the difference in vcore for stability on my 24/7 setups.... So far I think the best bios releases for 920's are 44, and 74... Regards...

You say that because probably you have not tried any of the new boards from Asus or MSI (Rampage III Extreme and Big Bang XPower). Both are superb motherboard and in my opinion, at least Asus,(the MSI one, i am going to get this week to try, so until then i have no comment) did a pretty good job this time with the Rampage III Extreme. Also they are doing something what the community have been asking to do while ago, more customer participation, and this time, Asus are listening us.

Yes, i have an Asus Rampage III Extreme, EVGA Classified E759 and MSI XPower on the way. Finally someone had to get a better product then the Classified, this one has been in the top for too long time... until EVGA release the new Classy...

Well, I've read a lot of complaints about R3X, and maybe for 980x is the best motherboard (not sure), but not for the entire S1366 series of processors... and a LOT of people think for 920 and that kind of chips, classifieds are still the best by far... being also a superb mobo for 980's too. MSI... no comments... Eclipse is one of the worst motherboards I've ever seen and tried, don't know about xPower... but MSI is a very irregular brand, and coming from 2 P7N Diamonds burned, 2 VGA's, can't say any good about it (you can check on XS thread). Sorry my english. Regards.

Hey,

Being a first time builder, I don't have a whole lot of experience with different boards.  I only bring up MSI's Xpower (Big bang) because that was the other board I was considering for a bit more money.  As I mentioned, I went with EVGA due to the amount of good reviews on Newegg and mostly because of the warranty. And obviously, it was almost 100$ cheaper.

Don't get me wrong - I've been able to overclock and all that quite well, and my scores seem right on with benchmarks.  I'm happy with this board, for the most part.

The cons:  The double boot issue bothers me, the VREG is always hot with a ton of fans, the heat-sinks are poorly designed for aftermarket heatsinks, and my overclock never seems to want to sync with Windows for some reason.  I'll have it up to 3.8 and Windows system manager will show 3.6, and so will all my benchmarks.  CPU-Z/E-leet shows me the right numbers - so - I suppose 'as long as it works' philosophy hits home here.  It's just, I'd hoped a board this refined, with so much time on the market, should have these issues ironed out by now.

MSI has some quality components.  I recently got my girlfriend a laptop, and it's such a deal for the price it's sick!  The X-power looks great, if it were cheaper, I'm guessing I'd have thrown in for that bad boy instead.  Thing is, it's not exactly in the same field as the E-758-A1.  It's newer and has newer features such as USB 3.0, etc.  Not sure it'd be -fair- to compare the two.

When it comes down to to it, if it weren't for the double boot, I probably wouldn't be reflecting on my decision to go with the 758.

@kpablo-  I also have the R3E, for high bclk without the use of SlowMode my board is garbage. I think if you have a higher multiplier the board could do well, but for Bloomfield 920's or 930's, if you do some research and read through the R3E threads you will see a LOT of people are stuck at 215 and some 220, which IMO is garbage for a 400.0 board. For Gulftown (unlocked chip) the board does very well.

I think most will agree that the Classified is probably the best board for Bloomfield oc and high bclk. The older generation boards are still best for Bloomfield chips, newer are designed more for Gulftown. I have a Gigabyte UD7 that destroys my REX3 for max oc and high bclk without having to use SlowMode.

@  Alexjs, I am at 4.3ghz on the R3E and Windows shows 4.1ghz, thats not a board issue.3Dmark 06 and some other programs also read the wrong speed, they read about 200mhz slower than the actual speed because they see the CPU Multiplier at 20 and not 21.

This is just whether Turbo Mode is being taken into account or not.

Re:EVGA X58 Motherboards - BIOS 74 Released 2010/09/07 17:31:07 (permalink)
In most cases I'm going to try like hell to dumb this EVGA brand motherboard and go for an Asus Asus Rampage III Extreme Motherboard. EVGA has done nothing to fix alot of issues with this board and it's still buggy. Somethings were not meant to be and motherboards isn't EVGA's strongest selling point in my option. I've always loved their video cards but even Asus has come along ways with some of their newer cards and designs which makes them even more interesting to check out and buy from. This is what I love to see. All these tech companies competing for your business.  The bottom line is if your going to sell this board at the mark up price you want then at least make it stable and functional which it clearly isn't to date with each bios release that comes out. Why focus on micro-code and 980x fixes when there's alot more problems needing more attention and focus on.

So cards yes motherboards never again......

again ppl

The problem with ppl and boards
You only get boards options when u run into limitation of bios for the cpu/ram u have and that also u need a good picked X58 chipsets

Problem with most ppl and their ****ing.
Is the limitation is not the hardware they have but themselves.

No of ppl who go around forums preaching their limitation of their hardware limitation .
example when x58 was launched with i7..

Ppl started some rubbish about uncore +1 etc and u cant do 2000mhz ram because of uncore etc.
Then this idiot starts guides which noobies follow them to a hardcore level. Even when they see other ppl doing 4.4-4.6ghz bclk 210-220 at dram 2100mhz - 2200mhz.. they still think this was luck.

Again you can change boards and compare them.
Ultimately its more yourself as a limitation rather than hardware.

Fanboys and ignorant people will never realize & accept that most boards ( be it a Classified E760, be it a MSI Big Bang X58 Xpower, be it a Foxconn Flaming Blade GTI ) will clock your CPU & RAM on air very similarly if not identically ( you will hit the same maximum stable frequency up 'n' down ).

About the guys with LSI RAID Controllers having issues ( don't jump on me if I mention something that has been said before, I didn't read the previous pages, I barely have the time to complete this post ) did you guys set the Maximum Payload Size to 4096 bytes and assigned a designated IRQ for your RAID card ( like 10 ) ?

Ok, I just have a question.  I have the Classified X58 MB. I have never flashed my bios before. Do I really have to do this if there (IMHO) is nothing wrong with my board now?  Does this improve the performance in any way? And, yeah, it  makes me very nervous  just thinking about doing it. Never done it before..   Sounds easy, but could be costly, yes???

No you don't have to update your BIOS AJ, and no, you're not missing any kind of real-life performance at all.

Apparently I only need VT to run a 64 bit Virtual Machine in windows 7. Have the 32 running without VT.

That's pretty arrogant! Doesn't help anybody or anything! I hate fanboys...:-D Even if they are for the company I myself like.

Although I don't necessarily agree with cstk's logic, he does bring up one thing I can go with:

"Again you can change boards and compare them"

I know that some people don't have the luxary to have direct experience with several different boards/companies/CPUs, etc to be able to make their own personal choices on what is good and what isn't, but that is the only solid way to base an opinion.

I have a 758 v2.0 and have had no problems whatsoever with the board.  But, that's just my personal experience.  Just like the fact that two of the same videocards don't necessarily reach the same max OC settings, no two pieces of hardware will EVER be the same, no matter how identical they manufacture it.  I know problems are frustrating, I had a laptop that was horrible and almost never worked even after several repairs, but the company itself had great reviews.  All we can do is troubleshoot and RMA, the life of building computers, lol.

So, it being a fanboy a bad thing?  As long as the person is happy, who cares? lol.

Also, let's not get into "Well, there are so many reports of issues".  How many exactly?  What percentage of that is the overall sales of that model of board, or of EVGAs boards in general?  Or how about a radio of good/bad?  Without those answers, there is no way to accurately guess whether a problem is "widespread" or not.  All you can say is "Well, I see it a lot of the forums", like the 3.99GB for example.

I still love you all!

I've been using the 74 bios for a while now. I only switched to it because I was troubleshooting some bad ram a few months back. Everything has been solid since I pinpointed the bad ram.

Anyway, I have had this MB for over 6 months and it's been pretty solid and I do like EVGA.
BUT, the double-pump with Virtualization on is just about enough for me to not recommend or buy another board from them down the road. It's not because the board is bad or of bad quality, but 6 months (for me) is ridiculous to have this issue when other companies don't have the issue. I don't even reboot my PC anymore, I shut it down, wait then power it up because I'm afraid my HDD is going to get fried. I need VT for work, I can't help it! It's a function of the CPU and this needs to be fixed before the next bios! Put the hardcore OCer's needs on hold for 1 freaking BIOS update with the voltage and core tweaks and fix this GD problem!

It would be nice if a newer bios was made with better memory performance for the e759.For me all bios after 59 have been crap.

When will the BIOS 75 be released to enable SpeedStep and Turbo on BIOS reset by default?  When I reset BIOS in current version SpeedStep is disabled while Turbo is enabled.  One was released for the FTW3 board but when will it be released for other X58 boards?
