well we are splitting the current over twice the ammount of cabling so I would definately assume it is effective. As for safety, there is nothing wrong apart from if you were to solder the wrong connections. They will take it back as long as returned to "as new". James

Well, technically it should be both safe and effective. You just have to make absolutely sure that you solder to the correct pins on the back side of the ATX connector and that you do not bridge any pins or cross-wire anything. The effective part comes from the fact that you are now distributing the power supply to come from an additional +12V lane (three +12V lanes, instead of standard two provided by the ATX connector). The only variable that remains is can the board traces properly handle the added current. Peter said way back that they have been beefed up to handle it so the only thing to do here is to take a leap of faith and trust his statement. atfrico @ Dejanh, Let my assistant handle that for ya..... It never hurts to send a PM u know. I emailed Jacob to get some info from him. I will ask him this as well. Molex can supply only one additional +12V lane. Modding with a PCI-E connector I think could supply two additional +12V lanes. One should be enough however.

The pic with a brief explanation of the MOD is located on the first post of this thread. Soldering seems simple. All you need to do is get the solder gun, even a small one should do, to solder the cables to the board. If i remember correctly, you get the metal stick, place it on the cable and board and let the gun melt the stick till you have a good portion of metal melted on the place you want to solder. Let it dry a bit till is done. You can always practice with a spare of cables and a piece of metal sheet.

recon 7185 @ dejahn, have the board traces on the SLI3 been beefed up as well to handle the additional current? Not sure how different the actual traces are between regular x58's and classifieds I would not know really. EVGA engineering would though. Try firing off an email to Jacob or somebody else higher up and they should be able to rout your question to the right place. On another note, I see evga_marketing lurking around

You don't say It might be my assistant's beauty that brought him here . @Falcon, Agreed, that would be easier, but to find the right one is the kicker since heat is involved. I have never tried those before if should be interesting if someone tries it and give us the 411 on how they perform.

I'm really curious what the official stance on this will be...just hopefully not "this is isolated and only in certain circumstances". Most that run 1KW+ PSUs would fall into that "isolated" category.

This is exactly why I don't want to try this myself. Like I stated earlier, many of you have the knowledge, skills, and abilities to handle something like this. I don't unless I have someone walk me through it. The company needs to give us an official stance on this subject an stop beating around the bush here. The longer it takes the more I get upset. I want EVGA to step up here and give us an official answer now!

The colours are not important.. He used red because he had some red wire.. Both are 12v pads on the board and they are going into 1 12v molex pin. As previously said, it probably would be better to use a pcie 6pin since there are 3 12v wires going to the connector as opposed to one.

Because the red wire runs at 5v and the yellow runs 12v, therefore because we need 2 12v wires we must run the both to the yellow wire's pin.. Hope that makes sense :) James

I agree. I don't want any Ghetto mod sticking off the side of my expensive 759 nor my expensive 760s. This looks absolutely horrendous. I can probably find a way to hide it, but I shouldn't have to. Especially something that I have to make myself and didn't officially come from the company.

I don't think its cool how people are quick to stab EVGA in the back when this is clearly a problem with not just there board. I mean if you put a Pratt & Whitney F100 jet engine (480) on a Ferrari (Motherboard) and then get mad at Ferrari for something failing or falling off at 600MPH is just ludicrous.
This is not stabbing EVGA in the back. This is about receiving what we paid for and that is a mobo that is 3 way sli compatible with PCIe 2.0 certified GPUs. The GTX 480 is PCIe 2.0 certified, and the 760 and other Mobos without the additional power plugs are not 100% safe running them in 3 way sli which the 760 is sold to do. Is the Pratt and Whitney jet engine certified to be run in a Ferrari ? It is clearly not. However, the GTX 480 is certified for use in the 760 by virtue of the PCIe 2.0 Specification. These Specifications (PCIe and usb), socket types (cpu), etc...are the safeguard for components to run together cohesively, efficiently, and safely. That is the whole purpose of standards being agreed to by manufacturers. Unfortunately for EVGA and other manufacturers the excuse of they didnt know the GPUs would do that, doesn't wash. EVGA and others made both the Mobos and the GTX 480 or at the very least had intimate knowledge of the workings and requirements the GPUs and Mobos. The overclocking tools for the end user was also made by EVGA and the other manufacturers. In this case I just dont see a firewall of plausible ignorance. Somehow the Specification system failed. This failure not the responsibility of the end user. I dont want a step up or a replacement board. I like my current board. I dont want usb3 or sata 6 or 4 way sli, because I didnt pay for those features, But I do want 3 way sli with PCIe 2.0 Spec. cards which includes GTX 480 because that is the feature I paid for. All I ask for is fix my board to prevent failure or guarantee full replacement of all damaged components in the event of board failure. Stabbing EVGA in the back? nope. Just want what I paid for.

Well I don't have the Classified board but I do have 2 758 boards that I just checked and both have very hot 24 pin connections. On my first board I have 2 ATI 4890's and am on my third power supply, all Corsair 1000. The second board has 2 Nvidia 470's overclocked and DAMN is the connector hot! That pc has a Enermax 1200 power supply. It maybe my imagination but the connector looks slightly deformed. After reading all 13 pages I'm very nervous as both pc's are on pretty much 24/7 with my kids at home. I sure hope that EVGA will provide us with more info as how to handle this problem. I don't have a problem doing the mod but don't want to lose my warranty,

No way will I do this mod. You simply should NOT have to do something like that in order to get your MB to work properly. If this issue is not "isolated" after all and it happens to me, I'll RMA the board, RMA my power supply, and then promptly sell the board and switch to an Asus MB with the extra power connection. Once is more than enough for a problem like this to happen.

Do not wait until it happens to you, now I am down to a couple hard drives, cpu, and ram trying to figure out what is cooked... trust me you do not want to be in my shoes right now... get a replacement board be it EVGA or ASUS if you get ASUS make sure your ram is on the compatability list.

OK. So why do you not blame the graphics card makers for making cards that didn't perform to existing standards? The boards were already out there, the 480's were not.. same logic.

Hellcat714 I don't think its cool how people are quick to stab EVGA in the back when this is clearly a problem with not just there board.

I do m8. In this case the manufacturer of the GPUs and the Mobos are the same. If for example if a person used Asus Mobo and Asus GPUs then Asus could only blame themselves. Same for the other manufacturers. The way I see it is Asus takes the hit from the consumer. Asus hits Asus. Finally Asus hits Nvidea or ATI. I used Asus as the example because I dont want to be seen as picking on EVGA. I could have chosen MSI, Gigabyte, etc... aswell.
