EVGA SuperNOVA 850 GT (part# 220-GT-0850-Y1)
The fan spins every 2 min with this unit, regardless of load, sleep, etc. It just spins up every 1-2 minutes for 30sec to 45sec constantly.
It is by far the noisiest part of this build.
The system/MB temps never reach above 35c idle, yet this PSU will fire up it's fan as I mentioned every couple of minutes like clockwork.

I built this system to be quiet over performance, yet this PSU now is ruining the entire experience of having a XL case and low RPM fans.
Is it possible this is faulty and needs an RMA? Or is this a feature of the Eco Mode after a year or use? This is a new occurrance, it did not do this the 1st year.
Any help or recomendations desperately encouraged!

    (excerpt EVGA Spec)
"Auto ECO Mode to ensure silent operation under low to medium loads with no configuration necessary"

So, the questions that I think of:

---> dust bunnies build up over the last year inside of PSU - causing more heat buildup?

---> How have you monitored CPU & GPU activity (software used?) to see if you PC is actually idle?

---> If you have a kill-a-watt device or UPS with a digital readout -- What is the PSU load at the time the PSU fan activates?

    ---> Room Temp?

---> Fan speeds that your idle PC uses?  (is heat building inside of the case, because the case fans go Off or are set too low)

---> Is your Rig pulling enough power "when you think its idle" to heat up the PSU?

---> Is the PSU working correctly because some trip point is being exceeded?

---> Has a sensor/ circuit gone/going bad & the PSU fan should not be triggered to come on? ( I do not know the triggers for Auto ECO MODE)

Is it possible this is faulty and needs an RMA?

Yes, possible; however, run through the questions above to check your PC

I havent been able to determine if there are any issues that would  trigger the Eco Mode.
I have run HWINFO and logged the system when the issue occurs, but have been unable to determine what is triggering it. Is there documentation on what exactally the Eco Mode feature makes calls to to trigger the fan?

    • The system is clean and free of dust
    • The system is installed in a Fractal Torrent XL case, CPU/MB temps never reach above 35c idle. Case/CPU fans run currently at 10% unless MB/CPU temps climb above 40c in a fan curve on MB BIOS.
    • I have removed all extra SSDs, GPUs to eliminate a potential power issue, however the issue continues, even when the system is "idle" with no open applications.
I have CSV files of HWINFO available, but I don't believe I can attach them here.

    Hail and well met!

Could this be an issue with top mounted PSU units and the Eco Mode? If temps that are not being recoded by the MB are hitting the intake fan mounted in the down position at the top of the case, could it be that the Eco Mode is firing upo because of the mounting location?

Would mounting the fan in the "up" position possibly help?

    Hail and well met!

As mentioned above, I do not know the trigger for the PSU fan to come On; could be just Temp or could be Temp & Load.

---> EVGA literature mention both Temp & load.

Many PSU designs, I believe it was just a temperature threshold that triggers activating the PSU cooling fans

    Based on your answers:
I think you need to start a conversation with EVGA support - possible RMA
