Hi, I have performed a step-up in the past, and have seen a few other posts about the step-up cost calculation (one such example here: https: //forums.evga.com/Which-price-is-used-for-the-Stepup-difference-that-I-have-to-pay-m2805750.aspx) - it seems that I can't post the link, so please remove the space between the colon (:) and first slash (/) From what I have seen, the cost calculation goes like this: (Step-Up Card Cost) - (Price Paid for Original card) = Cost of Step-up And based on the above formula, if the price paid for the original/lower tier card is MORE than the price of the card which one wishes to step-up to, then rather than credit or refund the difference to the customer, the step-up cost becomes $0 (because "Cost of Step-up" cannot be negative) Example: Stepping up to a 3090 FTW ($1889 on EVGA website) from a 3090 XC3 Ultra (Price paid was greater than $1894). Rather than crediting the difference of $5 to the customer, the difference is brought to $0, so effectively, the step-up cost is $0 I had recalled that one of the main benefits of EVGA was that the step up program allowed users to purchase an EVGA product from an authorized retailer without having to worry about an inflated cost as that inflated cost could be used towards a step-up product Please let me know if I'm mistaken or if the step-up program has changed in some way (specifically for the calculation of step up cost)

It is not the price you paid, but the MSRP of the card you bought that is factored. Taxes, shipping, and other mark ups are not counted as credit to your new card. Myself and another user went through this when I stepped up my card a couple of months ago. The system allows you to enter any price you want, but when you get to step 2 and they review your uploaded receipt, they adjust that price to the MSRP of the card when it was bought.

I asked the same thing in the german forum, because the german step up page differs from the english page. They recently added this to it: https://www.evga.com/support/stepup/
- If the purchase price paid on your invoice (less any discounts) exceeds the MSRP of your product when you submit for a Step-Up, then the Price Paid for Product will be adjusted to match the product’s current MSRP.
And btw, it's also not mentioned on the english step up page for eu: eu.evga.com/support/stepup/ So, yes, they changed it in some way and they changed it really sneaky. Yes, you will have to pay a lot for that step up. The only case where your paid price will be used for the calculation is if you paid less than the MSRP for the product.

Thanks for the replies. The step-up program definitely isn't as attractive as it used to be

The crazy prices charged makes it a lot less attractive if you bought the card above msrp. I have a friend who bought a 3060 with plans to step up the card, but because he paid 600 plus for the 3060 it was well above the 340 MSRP so he would lose another 200 plus on the step up. It is a faster way to get a 3090 at retail, the 3080 FTW3 step up queue is still jammed up since it's the best bang for the buck.

I asked the same thing in the german forum, because the german step up page differs from the english page. They recently added this to it:

I Just checked the step-up conditions on the link you provided and this sentence is NOT there. So maybe they removed it again (because they were receiving a lot of flak about it maybe?). Ok, it is not in the official rules of both www.evga.com and eu.evga.com ====== But it is in the FAQ on https://www.evga.com/support/stepup/:Why did my price paid get changed during the approval process? - After reviewing the price paid on your invoice, the Step-Up department will adjust pricing based on your invoice.
- If there was a rebate for your product, the Step-Up department will adjust pricing to reflect rebates.
- If the purchase price paid on your invoice (less any discounts) exceeds the MSRP of your product when you submit for a Step-Up, then the Price Paid for Product will be adjusted to match the product’s current MSRP.
- Step-Up eligible products purchased through a Bundle or DIY are discounted based on the percentage off the MSRP to the Bundle or DIY price. Each item within the Bundle or DIY must be calculated using the same fixed percentage off the MSRP for every item.
========== But is is NOT in the EU terms [font="'helvetica neue', arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 22px"]Why did my price paid get changed during the approval process? One of three reasons: - After reviewing the price paid on your invoice, the Step-Up department will adjust pricing based on your invoice.
- If there was a rebate for your product, the Step-Up department will adjust pricing to reflect rebates.
- Step-Up eligible products purchased through a Bundle or DIY are discounted based on the percentage off the MSRP to the Bundle or DIY price. Each item within the Bundle or DIY is calculated using the same fixed percentage off the MSRP for every item.

I don’t speak for EVGA, but this is my understanding: If you find a mom and pop retailer that wants to scalp and make money, a user could buy a 3060 (just an example card) for $1500, and then exchange the 3060 for a 3080ti. Why is that bad? Because EVGA probably sold the 3060 at below MSRP to a distributor, and the distributor sold it to the retailer for a more than they paid EVGA, and then retailer charged a premium as well, so EVGA would be losing everything over MSRP to a mom and pop shop… that’s not just bad business, that is stupid business. The only ones benefiting would be the retailer and distributor, while EVGA and the customer are getting ripped off severely. That will never work, so don’t pay over MSRP unless you can afford to lose the extra costs from your own pocket. Taxes was another change, since EVGA was eating the cost of taxes, and finally put that cost back on the step up program, so now the total cost is charged appropriately to the buyer. Losing money is bad business. Don’t expect EVGA to eat the cost over MSRP to make the step up program more attractive, because they would go out of business, and no one will want that.

If I used a 20% off coupon to purchase my soon to be stepped up card, do I lose that 20% off coupon since I purchased it for 20% below MSRP? and then I'm buying a step up card at full MSRP?
