So... I recently bought an untested sr-2 with no chipset/vrm cooler on it (it was a bit cheaper because of this). I intend on running it with one cpu for now, probably a x5675 not sure yet. I have a few questions.

1:Will my Be Quiet Dark Rock Pro 3 work on this board?
2:What are my options with the chipset/vrm cooling? Is there any substitute heatsinks I can use or is there any way I could get the stock ones somewhere? Watercooling isn't an option for me because I don't have the kind of money for all the equipment (I bought some other pc stuff before this and the board just happened to show up, I couldn't pass up on this chance so I'm out of spare cash for now) lol.

Anyways it's going to take about 2 weeks for the board to ship so I'm just looking for some opinions while I wait. I have no idea if the board even works so I need to figure out the cooling situation before I can even test it. Thanks for your input!

Hi Rustler_One and welcome to the EVGA forums!

I'm just chiming in for the question about your CPU cooler, the Dark Rock Pro 3, I took a look at the manual and it does support socket 1366 so yay for that one! Just in case you  need the more info: https://www.bequiet.com/en/download/products

As for the chipset/VRM heatsink, I would either look for another SR-2 being sold for parts or just get creative with some after market heatsinks and fans. Perhaps someone else can make suggestions there.

Thanks for the reply! Nice to know that the Dark Rock Pro 3 will probably fit. As for the heatsinks, do you think it would be worth a shot contacting EVGA to see if they have one/would sell me one?

Well, as a customer support tech for EVGA, I can confirm that we do not send out such parts unfortunately and I don't think we have any of those boards available anyway.

Sure thing! I'll post pics when I get it, I live in Vancouver B.C. Canada and the board is going to ship from NY so it's going to take about a week maybe more to get here sadly. lol
This build is probably going to take a few months though.

Now the bad news, one of the vrm chips for cpu 0 is shot... which isn't surprising considering I bought this for $100 USD. Although, I intended to run 1 cpu for a while, could I still just use cpu 1?

Think it would be wise to question EVGA tech support about that.

Yeah, I contacted them and they weren't to sure about it which I guess makes sense since it would be kind of hard to tell. Once I figure out what to do with the cooling we'll know for sure.

Also I might be getting a cpu and ram later this week so the last thing is the board cooling.

What's mods rigs? Is it something where you post your setup? Sorry I'm still pretty new to the forum lol.

Huh, that's interesting. I guess if I get the SR-2 working I'll post something there, I still have no idea if it will work though. There's a good chance it wont. The only EVGA part I have right now is a 750w g2 psu, too bad they don't make Ryzen boards .

Alright, update for anyone that was interested in this project. I was able to find some heatsinks that would probably work for the NB, SB, and the 2 nf200, but I can't find anything suitable for the vrms. So it looks like a custom loop is the only option which means I'm going to need to spend like $300 on watercooling parts... and that's not including the block for the board... it's something I wanted to do in the future anyways so I guess that's fine. I'm not sure how much the blocks for the board would cost but I'm guessing at least over $150, so that will be on hold for a while, possibly somewhere in the first half of next year. On a better note, I got an X5660 and 12gb of ram for a decent price last month and a x58 board about a week ago, currently using this as my main system. At least I have more ram now, 8gb was not enough on my previous system and good ddr4 is still pretty damn expensive.

Update 2: The price of watercooling parts went up a good bit here in the last few months so I decided to go ahead and get a bunch of separate heatsinks to test the board. It turns on, nothing burned while it was getting power (made sure not to plug in the cpu power for slot 0). Didn't post and gave me code FF which could be because there's no cpu in slot 0. I also found a shop near me that might be able to repair the vrm as long as the traces aren't completely destroyed, I'll be going there later this week probably. Anyways, here's a few pics of probably one of the most ghetto SR-2 in the world! Sorry for the small/low res pics, it's because of the 500kb limit for pics. lol

Final Update: Well bad news. Took it to the shop yesterday and they took the dead vrm chip off, they said it can't be fixed because there's too much damage. Some of the contacts on the board are burned off. That sucks, but I'm not surprised. It was cheap-ish after all. Maybe I'll buy a working one towards the end of next year or something because I do still want one. lol

The semi good news is that the board *might* work with the burnt MOSFET removed. You can try... :D

I would naturally advise caution, though. You can see if it’ll work by plugging in the 24 and 8 pins to the board and nothing else. Try to turn it on. It *should* stay on if I remember correctly from when I had this with another board in the past. If your PSU turns on and off immediately, there is still a short and your PSU is kicking into OVP/OCP.

I did try it again, did the same thing it did last time. Turns on normally and stays on, it went through post codes and landed on FF.

Sure has been a while, but I guess I couldn't escape the fact that I wanted one, so I did end up buying a working sr2 this time. Got the board about a month ago. Got 2 x5650, 6x8gb ddr3 ecc, and some spare coolers over the last few weeks from a friend of mine. The old (left) and the new (right), will take a pic of the test setup later today probably. But yeah, here it is lol.

Oh yeah, saw that earlier and I did leave a response on the thread. But yeah, his work is great and I'm highly considering one if I have enough lol. May not get another chance for a while so maybe I should. And here's the pic of the test setup. Again, those coolers were free spares so yeah, they don't perform half bad for how old they are actually. lol

You can set the fanspeed to 38 or 36 for the noicy mobofan, much better for your ears.
dont go under 36-38 fan will be off.
I have this setting on my 2 overclocked SR-2, still working after 10 years.

I've also had an SR-2 for half a year and fight with it all the time. Sometimes it's really fun and sometimes I could throw it out the window. Now I'm about to get 96GB Ram to run - unfortunately very frustrating if you have overclock as well.

Did you ever end up getting one of those blocks, if you take off the http part it should let you post the rest.  I'd get 2 for mine if so since my EK one cracked and my other is air cooled.

Got a bit busy with life and other things, so this was delayed a long while. My chipset fan was actually worn out, so I ordered a new fan at some point, took about a month just for that lol. Managed to find a case, Rosewill Blackhawk Ultra for $85, which was lucky. One of my x5650 had some issues, so I replaced them with x5675s. Now all seems fine and I have it built up, pic below. Next thing to get is a better gpu, sold my 980ti for money towards my next gpu while I use this 280x for now. Have a few other parts to sell which should bring me close. But yeah, more or less complete now.
