Im hoping to join the step up program if there is a good enough difference. I wouldn't mind having having two extra gigs of vram as well. But if there isnt a big difference, i might as well stay with the 3080.

sorry,, SLI is all but dead for gaming purposes ,etc... Everyone pretty much just stopped even trying to optimize for it/ code it anymore... Unfortunately.
That's unfortunate as I suspect that going forward the newer GPU will always be very expensive. Linking older gpus was sometimes a decent "poor man's upgrade" (when it could be done).

I am definitely going to be in queue to get one if possible but I do wonder if it will be worth whatever bump in performance over the 3080. If it is $200 more MSRP and it does 10% better than a 3080 then you are paying almost 30% more for 10% more performance. Considering the gap between the 3090 and 3080 isn't that big I am wondering where the 3080ti will lie.
Thing is, if you haven't been able to get a 3080 (or even a 3060ti) even at $1000 it is still half of the price one can realistically find then these days. My hope is that the mining restrictions will open it up a bit for gamers.

I was reading up on stuff supposedly they don't support nv link yet imp hopping these bad boys get drivers for it tho. I mean i dont need to but if i ever did decide i need that much power for editing and some future art projects.

DX12 supports implicit multi-GPU, which means that devs can code their game to treat all attached GPUs as a single resource pool at the API level. This is different for DX11 and lower, which required specific SLI profiles that would tell individual games how to utilize multiple GPUs at the GPU driver level. I-mGPU would be much lower level to the game's code, but was actually more work to implement for devs, as they'd have to re-write their engines to support the DX12 feature with maybe some input from Microsoft; SLI and Crossfire were always a collaborative effort between devs and GPU manufacturers where the devs could lean on NVIDIA or AMD. I'm still very salty about the death of multi-GPU support. I went into Maxwell assuming that future DX12 support would be much more robust that the heyday of SLI. It went the complete opposite direction and now multiple GPUs are only good for benchmarking and heavy compute tasks.

Generally speaking the 3090 is only 10% faster than the 3080 for gaming. Given the obvious assumption of the 3080 Ti landing in between the 3080 and 3090 for price and performance, there isn't much of a window to target. I am interested to see how the benchmarks shake out when the time comes as well as the price. Above all, crossing fingers and toes for a higher level of stock at launch but I fear that is likely not going to be the case.

Oh boy SLI... In 2021 it seems kind of laughable really. Honestly, I even doubt you alone could get two cards. Those photos of the leaked MSI card look sick(if they're real), I'd be surprised if bots didn't buy them all out.
