I am sure that others have the same questions so thought it would be better to ask on the forum instead of an official ticket to EVGA. - Can we get some clarification on the different versions of the NU Audio Cards?
- NU Audio - The standard audio card, original version.
- NU Audio Pro - New Pro version of the original NU Audio card
- NU Audio Pro 7.1 - New Pro version of the original NU Audio card + the "extra" PCIe card that adds the extra audio channels.
- NU Audio Pro Surround - Only includes the "extra" PCIe card that adds the extra audio channels
- Availability;
- NU Audio - Can be purchased now.
- NU Audio Pro - ?
- Nu Audio Pro 7.1 - Pre orders already sold out. When will this be available again?
- NU Audio Pro Surround - ?
- "NU Audio Officially Certified Headphones List, Click Here"
- This implies that there are headphones that will not work with the audio card? Is there a reason why a pair of headphones with the proper connector would not work with the card? For example Shure Earphones, Sennheiser IEM's, Sensaphonics IEM's, etc.
- Microphones;
- What type of microphones can be used? Anything that will connect to the 3.5mm Mic-in?
- Any plans to create a certified list of microphones?
- What is the difference between the mic-in and line-in ports?
- Does the Pro Support and of the Dolby Digital and or DTS audio formats?
- Assuming that it does not how will this impact the NU Audio Pros ability to function as a Sound Card for a media center setup where these audio formats are commonly found?
- Correct me if I am wrong; In theory as long as the software that is being used for video playback supports Dolby Digital and/or DTS and is properly configured the audio card its self does NOT need to support those audio formats as its not doing the actual decoding, the software such as Plex is doing the decoding. NU Audio Officially Certified Headphones List is pointless. Any headphone/headset that has the right connector will work. Does anyone know if EVGA added Dolby Digital and DTS encoding to the software?

I will hold my comments regarding the Certified Headphones list until someone from EVGA hopefully replies to this thread... I am not entirely sure that the sound card needs to support Dolby Digital or DTS. My thinking is that as long as the software that you are using for video playback supports Dolby Digital or DTS than it would do the actual decoding and the EVGA NU Pro would simply output the audio ideally as a PCM stream. Update: Appears that this article from Plex confirms my theory above regarding Dolby Digital and DTS, https://support.plex.tv/articles/212072167-audio-configuration-guide-plex-media-player/. Basically we dont need the NU Audio Pro to support Dolby Digital or DTS as long as the software that you are using for playback, such as Plex, is doing the decoding for you.

Motherboard have a QVL (Qualified Vendor List) for RAM. That doesn’t mean other ram modules won’t work, that just means the manufacturer was able to get a sample of specific product numbers for RAM and verify they function properly with the bios and software.
The headphone list is the same thing. EVGA was able to get headphones they could test. More than likely, the headphone manufacturer was willing to send over a sample of their product so that it could be verified. Other headphones will work, but the certified list wouldn’t contain their information without EVGA testing the headphones to verify they operate as they state they will.

Updated: 11/20 to include questions regarding Dolby Digital and DTS audio formats
Ok, lots of questions here. 1. NU Audio is our original audio card. It's a stereo-based card, which features an optical output for up to 5.1 channels via Dolby/DTS passthrough. NU Audio Pro 7.1 is made up of our NU Audio Pro and NU Audio Pro Surround cards, just sold in a convenient package. The NU Audio Pro and Pro Surround will be offered separately. The Pro card can work by itself as a stereo-based card with an optical output that functions similarly to the original NU Audio card. The Pro Surround card adds an additional 6 channels to the Pro card and is connected via a mini-DisplayPort cable. However, the Pro Surround card will not function unless connected to the Pro card. The idea here is that if you don't need 7.1 right away or don't plan to use multi-channel analog, you can purchase the Pro card first and later add the Pro Surround card to fill out your system. 2. Pre-orders are back up for the Pro 7.1 cards. Otherwise, availability for the Pro and Pro Surround, along with more 7.1 cards is expected roughly early- to mid-January. This is an estimation, though, as it may take a little longer. 3. MSim is correct that generally any headphone that can be plugged in to one of the audio cards generally is "compatible". However, a lot of EVGA members are not necessarily as familiar with audio as they are many of our other products, so we want to draw attention to a number of headphones on the market that NU Audio owners may want to consider to purchase. I have detailed notes of each card written up, which someday I may have time to post, but not yet. All testing is done in my spare time out of work, which has not been much for a while. Much like our motherboard memory support list, just because a headphone is not on the list does not mean it isn't compatibile; it just hasn't been tested yet. 4. No plans to do mic tests, except where mics are already included with certain headphones. Even then, it's just a matter of some simple testing talking to people on Skype. The Line-In port can support up to 32bit, 384kHz sample rate, whereas the Mic-In supports 24bit, 192kHz sample rate. Generally the Mic-in is designed more to use with talking to someone, as it has mic boost (gain) controls to adjust your voice volume. The Line-In is used more to record from another device. 5. Similar to the original NU Audio, the Pro cards support Dolby/DTS passthrough via an optical S/PDIF port. This means that the card will not encode or decode Dolby/DTS in real-time, but it will allow content that is already encoded in Dolby/DTS to passthrough to your receiver or decoder. In other words, the NU Audio and NU Audio Pro cards will not turn a stereo recording into a simulated 5.1 audio source for Dolby/DTS, but it will allow properly encoded sources to be processed by a receiver or decoder and played as 5.1 surround. Regarding Plex, that's a bit more complicated, so I'm going to take a pass on it with this post. Let me know what you're using for speakers, receiver (if any), and number of channels that you're setting up, and I can answer it much more easily that way.

This seems to be a really good high end card with good specs. But not having Dolby digital encoding is a deal breaker for me. Dolby encoding is not just turning a stereo signal into 5.1. It is usually turning the multi channel output of games, that do not have Dolby encoding licensed into a signal transmittable over SPDIF coax/optical to play the games in surround on your receiver. And the majority of games do not have this ability unfortunately, because of the license costs.
