It seems to me that there is one common thing to all of you. Black Screen happens when card lowers its clocks - this means lower voltage as well. Can you try to set up higher voltages for 2D mode; in riva tuner or msi afterburner or even better to mod BIOS ?

@bydun: as leonhart said check voltages in BIOS. If you got same out of range reading on 12V rail in BIOS as well - than your PSU is bad.

I think that voltage regulation on graphic card is bad - long shot. It would be nice to fix voltage for all the modes to be the same as for 3D mode. Just to prove if it is the cause of the problem.

use MSI Afterburner - for software mod. open options dialog and enable voltage changing and check force constant voltage for all modes in same dialog. than adjust voltage slider and click apply. This will give you constant voltage for all modes. the other option is to save bios from GPU-z, edit it with nibitor - set same voltages for all modes, save it under some other name and flash it with nvFlash. Second option is more robust but requires 1. gpu-z 2. nibitor 3. nvflash - run it from DOS - yes it means make bootable DOS CD or DOS USB stick hth M

depends on how cold they actually get, i have a Linksys AG241 that has failed caps, which would only act up during winter on really cold nights. of course i would hope on hardware that expensive the caps would be solid states atleast.

This may or may not apply to you guys' problem (I'm on an old 680i, BTW, with a 470 & 260), but it's worth mentioning, just in case. I was having similar instability issues recently, only it usually just froze up on the desktop, no black screens. I played around quite a bit with voltage settings in the BIOS, & one thing that really helped was giving the Northbridge a little boost. I think I was also overvolting my RAM just a bit, & backed it off from 2.0V to 1.9V, like on the label. ;) It was tricky figuring out what to change, cause it was like 95% stable, but just froze up for no reason every once in awhile, wether being stressed or not.

Well my solution worked for my Windows Welcome Freezing GTX 470. It has been over 2 months now. First do a fresh install of Windows 7. Install the latest nvidia drivers. Restart. After that restart your computer and get the screen where it says "Windows Repair". I forgot the key to this (it might be F8 - not sure). After that it will go through the detecting crap phase, after that has not found anything it will ask you to restore. Restore to whatever the latest date is, you will only have one. After it is done, it should work, it has for me. I don't know if this will work 100%, but for someone who has RMAed already and had the same problem with two cards (Windows Welcome Screen). I don't know what a system restore does to the computer, if it glitches out the drivers or who knows, but so far 2 months no problems. Before I couldn't even get in, now I can do everything like it is normal. The only thing I am afraid of doing is trying this with the latest drivers, as if the problem arises again I won't be able to access my computer and finish my work. If anyone has success in this, please post, if not, then I guess I was just extremely lucky.

I think it's totally a hardware issue because if the driver cause the BS frozen, something will be write into the system log, but after restart windows only told that the system wasn't shutdown normally, nothing else.

I still doubt it's a hardware issue.... many users have RMA'd their card and they still got the same issues. maybe everyone should attach the error log ..

My log is posted on Nvidia forums, another user there said the error codes point to a video driver issue. http://forums.nvidia.com/.dex.php?showtopic=183945 It is not a hardware defect and yea i RMA one card (but got it send back because no issue in the retailers test system, they tested it only for a short time though) and i bought a second 470 and both still do it from time to time. It doesn't really interrupt my PC use and i use both cards in SLI now but its still annoying to get the freeze every few days.
