First of all I want everyone to know that I LOVE this EVGA card and the support I have received from EVGA!
At about 1160 and 2320 rpms, with 2320 being twice 1160, I am experiencing a resonance in the EVGA ACX 3.0 cooler on my EVGA GeForce GTX 1080 SC GAMING ACX 3.0. I find it quite annoying and have already had one card replaced by EVGA, but the second one has the same problem. You might need to turn the volume up to hear it clearly, but listen for the specific pitch, which is the same at both rpms. The stock fan curve reaches the 1160 rpm when the temperature is 76 degrees or so. When playing games that use the GPU heavily this temperature is reached fairly easily, so the sound is fairly constant. I fixed my problem by creating a custom fan curve in MSI Afterburner. When the fan% reaches 36% it jumps to 42%, as the 39% speed is approximately 1160 rpm. I can hear the sound briefly as it ramps up or down between the two. Has anyone else experienced this? I don't think it is coil whine, as the only condition that needs to be met to hear the sound is fan rpm. I put a video on YouTube with the same title as this post. Being this is my first post here I can't provide a link, but the URL is youtube.com/watch?v=j7eQpv9gnQQ.

The noise doesn't have any affect on performance, as I was able to achieve a 23,994 3DMark Fire Strike Graphics Score using the latest Nvidia 368.51 hotfix driver, in my Intel Core i5-4460 Processor computer. 3dmark.com/fs/9095933 I overclocked the already overclocked card using a +70 Core Clock and +700 Memory Clock, and it is very stable at those speeds.

Defected. I've built several machines with the SC cards and they don't experience this. You can keep the GPU and its possible it will get better over time. honestly , with that much money invested I'd request another RMA. Your not alone...There are several people on OCN with the same issue with the EVGA SC experiencing this. -If it was me after 2 bad cards.. I'd just go with another brand. Evga has good customer service but down right flaky gpu's.

I went to OCN and did a search and found posts about coil whine but not the problem I am listing. If you have any specific links I would really appreciate them. The RMA process is a bit of a hassle, but it would be worth it if I knew I would get one without this sound. It still might have something to do with my computer, but I don't know what! As you can tell in the video it isn't very loud, but I find it quite annoying, and with my fan curve I only hear it for a split second when it zooms past the rpm range that creates the sound. The person I spoke with at EVGA today said that my returned card was tested for my specific problem and nothing was found. Besides this sound it is VERY quiet. I am using an Acer Predator XB271HU G-Sync monitor, so am able to run at 1440p, 165 Hz refresh rate, and have an excellent experience.

I'm experiencing the same thing with my GTX 1070 SC. At 40% / 80% fan speed, which translates to approx. 1160 / 2320 rpm, my card starts humming really loudly. It's much more prominent than the actual fan noise. At 39% and 41% the hum is reduced significantly and at 38% and 42% it is completely gone. It seems to me like there's some kind of resonance within the cooler itself that is only triggered by a specific air pressure / velocity. It almost sounds like blowing a beer bottle.

The last time I talked to a support person at EVGA, the person asked me to post this problem so we can see if others are having the same problem. So, please contact their 24 hour technical support at 1-888-881-3842 option 1, and tell them of your problem to see what they can do. The support is excellent, but they haven't been able to reproduce the problem on my first returned card.

ACX 2.0 did this too. My 980 Ti FTW makes the same noise around 30 then 60 or 70 percent I forget exactly. Most of the EVGA cards do this. I can't speak for any other brand as I've only ever owned evga

So the question of the day here is this: does the sound resonance still happen if you remove the side cover of the computer? If you're talking about a resonance, it's possible this is a particular fan speed corresponding with the natural helmholz resonance of your particular computer case. Removing the side would almost certainly alter the behavior. If that's so then it's just an attribute of your case due to its volume and whatnot, not a defect in the card. If you've already tried two cards, I'd say this is almost certainly the case. What are the odds that two random EVGA cards would both happen to have the same obscure problem where they only make increased fan noises at the exact same very specific frequency, or its harmonics?
Since you know what fan RPM you're seeing this resonance with, you might try an experiment where you download a tone generator on your phone or whatever and see if you can replicate a resonance inside your case with that same frequency generated by a different means. Divide the RPM by 60 to get the frequency.
I used to own a VW bug whose (aftermarket) sunroof was broken by a vandal. While driving around town at a very specific speed the air rushing over the hole in the roof of the car would generate an extremely strong resonance that was so powerful it was actually physically disorienting. I completely cured that problem (before patching the hole in the roof) by taping a little "shark fin" wedge of cardboard right at the front edge of the hole that stuck up into the airflow going over the hole and disrupted it. The resonance completely disappeared.
You've probably noticed similar things in any car if you're driving down the highway and someone opens just one window a crack - at a certain speed you'll get a powerful resonance, which goes away completely by simply opening another window in the car by a crack. At any rate, if this is a helmholz resonance issue there are many ways you could handle it. One you've already discovered, which is just to use a custom fan curve that bypasses that particular frequency altogether. Another would be to disrupt the resonance by altering one of the physical attributes that result in it. Removing the side of the case just proves the point, but there are probably things you could do to open up the case that don't involve removing the side. It might be something as simple as removing some of the little metal slats from the case that seal the PCI card slot openings next to unused PCI slots.

Further to my previous comment: consider speaker boxes for stereo gear. Speaker boxes are specifically designed to strengthen, weaken, or remain neutral in various frequencies, depending on how the designer would like that speaker to sound. This is done by various means, but the volume of the box and its dimensions are the most important. I think it's likely in this case that the particular volume and dimensions of the OP's case happen to result in a natural air resonance frequency that coincides either with the frequency of the fans at the particular speed the OP has noticed, or else one of its harmonics.

In my case ( ) the card isn't installed in a case yet. I finish my builds only after thoroughly testing all the components. A friend of mine ordered a 1070 ACX 3.0 as well and it whines exactly like mine, at the same frequencies / fan speeds. Slightly slowing down the fan with a finger immediately eliminates the hum / whine so I recon it's not an electrical resonance from the PWM-circuitry. Right now I'm convinced it's a resonance inside the fan itself, it seems like it's vibrating within its frame / suspension / bearing. I'll continue my investigations and keep you guys updated.

Just got my 1080 today with acx3.0 and have the same noise, its like you say "blowing in to a beer bottle" . At first I thought it sounded like the card was resonating like something was loose but after checking over it all seemed well. Anyway like you say anything between 37-42% and 78-82% makes the noise . Very strange

It is probably the heat sink fins vibrating and causing that noise. Probably on a section that has shorter length fins.

Hello, I can confirm the issue on my 1070 ACX 3.0 SC. Sadly, I don't believe that a RMA will change anything. This is probably due to the conception of the cooler itself. I have been using a custom fan curve for weeks now, and can confirm that this is probably the best possible workaround atm.

I never experienced this issue. However, I never ran the custom fan curves. I put mine in manual and run at 90% (still very quiet). Cooler is better (and no chance of ear bleeding with ACX 3.0!)

Of course you are not concerned. The issue is only at 40% RPM (and 80% RPM logically, but my custom fan curve never reaches this speed).

Have the same problem. First i had a 1070 SC but returned it to get a new one for the GoW4 deal. With my first card i never noticed this, but with the new card i instantly heard this noise at my first time playing a game. I returned this card too. Now i have a 1080 SC with the same problem. This sucks because i don't know how common this is. My first card was fine and now 2 cards with this annoying fan sound. Oh and it's only the left fan that produces the noise. What's the news with this problem? RMA worthy? Known problem with a small number of cards?

The noise is a known issue with a small number of ACX cards. If you can't stand the noise, buy a hybrid kit or RMA. I would highly recommend the hybrid kit. Temps are amazing with it.

Can confirm I have had this problems with 2, EVGA gtx 1080 ftws, first card was gen1 that had to be rma'd for a different reason secound one was brand new with the thermal pads and new vbios on it. Both cards resonate at the same fan speeds, very annoying. resonance starts @ 30% and 60% fan speed and dissipates at about 5% over or under

Getting this as well between 30-40% on 1080 SC. Has been like this since day 1 for me. Using custom fan curve to circumvent but it is certainly annoying that it can still be briefly heard as the fan goes through the RPM range. As well I would prefer to actually be able to use the 30% range to keep fan noise down rather than have to blow by it up to 40%. That whirring beer bottle noise is incredibly annoying and offputting Edit: other than this the cooler is great and I really like it. No other cons about the card or cooler

I did the Hybrid kit thing also, very quite now. Not much of a gamer but do watch allot of Blu rays. With MadVR this heats the card up to around 110 degF.. With the water cooler I'm at around 92 degF... The fan was loud before going the water route. Now I'm glad I did the EVGA Hybrid Kit. What's a hundred buck between friends...... EVGA SC 1080.

Add me to the list, 1070SC and have the resonant whine/howl at 36-41% fan speed. So annoying!!! I am also using the custom fan curve, and yes it is annoying when it passes through that range briefly, and can be lessened a bit by setting a hysteresis of 5 degrees. Now, what about a solution? I was thinking about how the Noctuas advertise about their little winglets and such to control micro vortices etc. which makes them quieter. I had the idea of adding some little winglets to the fan blades with small strips of blu-tac/stickytac to try and offset some of the turbulence. No luck so far but I am trying different patterns of blu-tac. Next step would be to start adding tac to some strategic places on the heatsink fins in case its not the fans, but that requires removing the whole shroud and I've got no clue how to do that yet and probably need to spend some time researching it. At least we know it's a "normal defect" and don't have to go through RMA, that alone is a lot of de-stress for me

Ok so I just found out about the thermal pad kit and will definitely need to be doing that which involves removing the heatsink, so I guess when the heatsink is off I will try to experiment with some acoustical mods.

I would like to remove the heatsink+fans assembly and run it on its own on a test bench to experiment with turbulence modification to the heatsink while the fans are running at their problematic rpm. If the problem is not caused by heatsink turbulence, then I will be looking at either fan blade turbulence (adding small wicker/gurney to the blades with sticky tac) or motor bearing whine. If it's the motor bearing, maybe try different types of thickness lubricants, assuming there is a removable rubber grommet on the other side of the fan hub. I have some thick clear silicon lubricant, slightly thinner vaseline, some motor oil of various viscosity, general purpose oil and some ultra watery clear mineral oil.

Just did the thermal pad mod, but didn't have a PWM controller to look at the fan issue unfortunately (there are ones on ebay like [link removed by forum - apparently I can't post links yet] , but delivery was too slow for me to wait). If your motherboard's chassis fan is PWM and goes low enough in the 35-40% fan speed range then you could just that instead and set min and max to whatever speed you want to drive the ACX3.0 at for acoustic bench testing/acoustic mods. I'm not sure about the ACX3.0 fan connector though, it's 4 pin PWM but seems to have a different shape to it. Not sure it will fit in the mobo header. For now I can't really be bothered trying to fix it as the custom fan curve with 5C hysteresis works pretty well. It's like a 90% fix imo. If you tune the curve just right you will almost never hear it. The ACX3.0 at a fan speed of 42% is actually very quiet on my unit and I'll probably end up locking it to that anyway. I have many other outstanding sound related issues to deal with like a noisy HDD and case fan hum. Building a quiet PC is much harder than I had anticipated. I got a Fractal R5 and Noctua fans, and it's still nowhere near quiet unfortunately, so even if the ACX3.0 was fixed it still wouldn't be quiet.
