EVGA rep reached out personally and remedied the issue. Thank you EVGA for easing my worries!
 
Original story: My step-up period ended recently but I locked myself in with the 1080ti FE with the knowledge that I can easily change the model to another one before it ships....I really want to change it to this model but EVGA is not budging. I can fully understand that had I missed the 90 day window...I didn't miss it...I'm locked in with a step-up as of yesterday but with the wrong model. I've been checking every few days in hopes for an alternative version over the past three months and the DAY AFTER they release a new version. I'm seriously so bummed right now.

    I got owned too except i already sent my 1070 sc2 for the space heater 1080 ti FE... 24 hours later they add the 1080 ti black and EVGA said im screwed bad luck try again next time.. lol my first step up and i get burnt yeah dont go with EVGA their support is the only thing they have otherwise come on they have 3 different versions of all cards

    Just had the thing delivered. Still would have been within my Step-up.
     
    Anyone want to buy a noisy, hot, 1080Ti FE - barely used? (No, don't worry, I know nobody does.)
    It's all about timing, I guess. Though the folks who lucked out will probably attribute it to skill.

    That is rough luck. If I was in your shoes, I would try the hybrid cooler or perhaps sell it on craigslist for a small loss and upgrade.

    Received confirmation email this AM that the switch from 1080 Ti FE to the 1080 Ti Black has been processed (after I paid the price difference between the two).  Just in the nick of time, they received my returned card this afternoon.

    I just wanted to let everybody know that I contacted support as per the post above by EVGATech_ChrisB.
     
    This is the response I received:
    "I'm sorry, but we're unable to change the card to the Black Edition. We only added it to the list due to stock levels of the Founders Edition being low, and will have more in stock soon. "
