I've had this 980 ti for about a year now (it's almost 3 years old), and while playing 'The Division 2' I heard a pop and looked over and the graphics card had caught on fire for a few seconds.
I was doing nothing out of the ordinary, and this card has been stable for me playing this game and many others since I got it.

What could cause it to catch on fire?
Is this an EVGA fault?? In only a few minutes of looking I've seen numerous cases where EVGA cards have caught fire...

Thankfully I was sitting right next to my tower and was able to quickly remove the side panel, blow it out and power down before any serious damage was done to anything else. Glad this didn't happen while I was sleeping or something.

I disassembled the card to see what caught and to get some pictures for reference:

In the times I have seen video cards catch fire a majority of those cases were when dust collected in large amounts near the PCB resulting in the dust catching fire. If you properly registered the GTX 980 check the EVGA website to see if you are still within warranty.

I bought the card second hand, so I have no idea if the card was registered. Aside from that, the card is/was pretty clean. I clean my PC regularly once a month.

It was also a VRM that ignited not a PCB

See the Original and Secondhand Warranty FAQ with the link to the Warranty page..The suffix in an EVGA product's part number indicates the warranty length, such as -KR, which means it has a 3-year warranty.

If the card is no longer in warranty I believe there is nothing that can be done.

    Yeah, sounds like it's toast.

From all that I've been reading, regardless if this is still in warranty or not, which I won't be able to find out until tomorrow. The 980 Ti SC+ and FTW models were prone to catching fire due to a manufacturer defect and EVGA knew/knows about this issue. So their customer support will be hearing from me directly.

    ~Thanks for your help.

Yeah, they were kinda prone to catching fire..But I wouldn't bother Customer Support, they knew that a long time ago..Nothing can/will be done about it unless by chance it has some warranty remaining.

Woahhh, I have an EVGA 980 TI and I've been playing absurd hours of COD:MW where the GPU is constantly pegged at 100% utilization for extended periods of time. Hope this doesn't happen here.

The 1080ti’s were released in March 2017, and the 980ti was out for almost a full 2 years prior to that, so there is a chance the card is significantly old than 3 years old.

If you bought the card used, the original registration wouldn’t matter much.

Usually a resistor fails. This has been noted on all series of cards that it does happen. You need to contact EVGA directly for sure. With how long it has been and the age of the card topped off with not being the original owner, I am not sure what they can do.
