Hi. Let me explain the situation first. The stock radiator fan is noisy. I don't like noisy.
Ok, as most of us (I guess), I swapped the fan and connected it to my MB. The problem is that I never managed to set it to work with the GPU temperature, I've not found any software that lets me do it; ones let me select the GPU temperature but I can't select the chassis connector, others it's the opposite. Asus things I guess. I've been using it related to the CPU temperature, but nowadays I've been playing a lot of games that are much more demanding of GPU power than CPU, and I had to change the fan spin to MAX if I didn't want the GPU to get over 80º. I've swapped back to the stock fan and I've purchased a Noctua NF-A12x25 3 pin fan. It arrived yesterday and I tried it connected to the GPU, but it doesn't spin. It works flawlessly if I connect it to the MB instead.

So, any idea of why it doesn't spin? For the record, my MB is an Asus Strix Z270-I Gaming, a Mini-ITX motherboard, so I don't have many options.

Where did you connect the fan to on the GPU?

I dont have your exact 1080Ti, but I do have the 1080Ti FTW3 fitted with the Hybrid 'kit'. The kit removes the 3 fans and leaves fan header 1 empty (which was the core fan if I remember rightly). With a small adapter I run the rad fan from the empty core header and use Precision X to run a custom core/rad fan curve. All works very well and tidy.

I did nothing fancy, just unplugged the power cable of the stock fan and plugged the new one. in the SC2 the connector is accesible without having to disasemble anything. The problem is just that its not a 4 pin connector with PWM capability.

I've got no idea on the differences between our cards, but might be worth spending a couple of £$ and buying one of those adapter cables and finding out if that header is alive and working on your gpu (see teardown video above) And then if Precision or Afterburner will run a custom curve for it

It's an option. Let's see if anybody knows why the fan is not spinnig and if nobody knows, I might try this. I hope I can disassemble the whole thing without having to reapply thermal paste and the rest.

Use OC software to Test the Fan ... force it On & then with a Custom Curve to see if you can control the fan Manually ?

Thanks for the reply! As far as I can tell, there is no way manually control the radiator fan speed if it's attached to the GPU. At least that I've found.

Going by what the tear down review says, the radiator fan speed is dictated by the aio fluid temp. Not the gpu core temp.

I've not read the whole post, but won't this method achieve what you want :

No, I've tried it but unfortunately, I can't control the chassis fan with Speedfan. Also, I also've read the review analysis, I'm surprised that it says that the fan speed changes with the fluid temp. According to a thread I found some years ago in this very forum, it's variable, but barely noticeable.

I still can't paste links : hxxps://forums.evga.com/Fan-swap-1080ti-SC2-Hybrid-Is-the-radiator-fan-dynamic-m2671874.aspx

At the end, I decided, what the heck, it's not that expensive. I can't believe that EVGA decided to go with the current setup, you were absolutely right and I could use the free connector in the GPU without any problem. Now I've a Noctua PWN fan connected and being controlled by the GPU. Almost silent, and below 56 ºC instead of a turbine at 60ºC.

Thank you very much! You saved my ears and my peace of mind!

Nice to see the header did what you wanted

Really glad that worked for your card, such a simple little cable that does the job great 😎

I've got mine running quiet until the temps start to rise with load, and then increase the rad fan speed accordingly in a nice smooth fashion. At full load the fan runs about 66% holding 49C core temp. And that's mildly over clocked.

I've created a flat running speed for the cards on board fan. This keeps the memory and power temps at 50C all day long without the fan revving up and down, just running at a quiet constant speed.

Happy days 👍🏻

I thought about doing this. However as I am running push/pull fans I decided to run off a motherboard header. The reason is GPU boost 3.0 also takes the power draw of the fans into consideration. I don't mean as a specific monitoring circuit. I mean as the overall +12v power budget. You can see this in action using Afterburner or Precision. Ramp up the fans to 100% and see your idle power usage increase by 4-8%.  Anyhow, the objective is the same, junk the loud stock fan and use a quieter more efficient solution.
