Hi,

I have just bought a new EVGA 1000 GQ 1000w Gold PSU for my gaming PC

I had a 850 previously, but need more power

I have conected all up but no power? LED comes on motherboard

I am struggling which lead I use to connect the 12v - I am sure this is the issue?

From the 12v from the mainboard what socket do i insert in

PERIF1, SATA1,2,3 or 4, VGA1,2,3,4 or CPU

I have tried all but still no power

Please help

The motherboard is a asus msq h87m pro

Regards
Lee

Your old power supply wasn't acting like this?

EDIT!!! Scratch all Below. Since this post was previously in the X299 section i assumed it was an Evga board.

***MAKE SURE YOU USE THE CABLES MARKED "EPS12V 4+4-Pin cable" to the CPU 12v EPS connectors on the motherboard. The X299 motherboard has two EPS CPU connectors and the 1000GQ power supply has two sets of EPS 12V 4+4 Pin cables so plug in the second  "EPS12V 4+4-Pin cable" also.  The 4+4 connector side of cable goes to motherboard and the opposite side which will be the solid 8 pin side goes to power supply. DO NOT USE THE CABLE MARKED PCIe  6+2 pin cable or you will cause damage to the motherboard. Remember PCIe cables are used for video card and PCIe slot power.  ***See below for more info.

This is from pg.18 off the Evga 299 Dark manual:

    7. Dual 8-pin EPS Connector The +12V EPS is dual dedicated power input for the CPU (See Page 49 for more specifics to the connector itself, and associated wiring/pinouts). Carefully choose the correct power cable by consulting with the installation manual for your power supply. This connector is designed only to work with an EPS or CPU cable. System builders may make the mistake of plugging in a PCIe 8-pin or 6+2-pin connector, which will prevent the board from POSTing and possibly short or damage the board. Although the cables appear similar, they are wired differently and attaching a PCIe cable to an EPS connector may cause damage to the motherboard. Alternatively, if no power cable is connected or detected, the system will not POST and will hang at POST code “C.” For optimal performance with Intel® Core™ X-series i9 Skylake-X processors, BOTH connectors must be plugged in with CPU power cables.

This is from pg.5 of the Evga 1000GQ manual:

    Q. Does it matter which end of the cable I plug into the power supply?
A: Yes, the connections going to the power supply will not have “break downs” like the EPS (CPU) has 4+4 on one
side and full 8-Pin on the other. Check each cable as it is labeled appropriately to match the power supply side,
and connect only the same ‘‘matching” cable directly to the power supply as referenced on each connector.

    Ok lets try again, lol.

If your talking about the CPU EATX12v 8 pin labeled as #2 on page 1-7 of the Asus H87M-PRO manual then IT GOES TO THE CPU 1 or CPU 2 on the power supply AND USE THE EPS12v 4+4 8 pin cable. ***See below for more info..  Also keep in mind that the Asus term "EATX12v" 8 pin connector is the same as the Evga's "EPS12v" 8 pin connector and your particular motherboard only has one EATX 12v 8 pin.

Got this from Evga 1000GQ manual Step 5 of page 4:

    5. Connect the 4+4-Pin EPS12V cable to the motherboard. (Optional) – If you plan on extreme overclocking and your motherboard supports additional 8-Pin or 4-Pin CPU power connectors, connect the second 4+4-Pin EPS12V cable. This is only needed for heavy overclocking or for Dual CPU motherboards.

Got this from Evga 1000GQ manual page 5:

    Q. Does it matter which end of the cable I plug into the power supply? A: Yes, the connections going to the power supply will not have “break downs” like the EPS (CPU) has 4+4 on one side and full 8-Pin on the other. Check each cable as it is labeled appropriately to match the power supply side, and connect only the same ‘‘matching” cable directly to the power supply as referenced on each connector.

Personal note: Therefore the EPS12v 4+4 cable side goes to the motherboard and the SOLID EPS12v 8 pin side of the cable goes to the power supply labeled as CPU 1 or you can use CPU 2.
DO NOT USE THE "PCIe" 6+2 8 pin cables for the CPU or damage to the motherboard may occur. The PCIe 6+2 are for powering video cards.

Got this on page 1-24 of the Asus H87M-PRO manual:

    • Do not forget to connect the 4-pin/8-pin EATX 12V power plug. Otherwise, the system will not boot.
