This is a positive step, but I think it is difficult to know if something has a backdoor or not, so probably all secret agencies will ignore this and keep doing what they have been doing.

How can they ban something they don't know exists? Backdoors are not supposed to be public knowledge. Good luck enforcing that. What are they going to do, randomly accuse companies and then demand to look through their source code?

The main purpose of the legislation is to make sure that individual EU countries do not allow its security and police forces to require software backdoors.

they would never officially require it so good luck to them trying to enforce it.

Thats.... just untrue. Im not sure I understand most of these complaints, all laws cant be enforced if law enforcement does not know about a law being broken. When backdoors are found the companies get fined (or if the country is an EU member, some sort of punishment there as well).

The EU should be banning much more than this. Way to destroy a proud and beautiful history, you morons.

...Really? I don't think you understand how the EU works. In this case "companies" may be in breach when they enter a back door...But not the EU.

If someone gets CAUGHT responsible for creating backdoors or doing whatever criminal activity then he will be punished by law.

It's probably a good idea to ban them but I wonder how it would be enforced. If a hacker found a way in or if the government do you fine the company or do you want a fix? If an exploit is found after release and they patch the security hole do you fine them because if that happens they probably wouldn't be looking that hard and instead wanting hackers to find them.

You've most likely have countries like the US and China that are forcibly ensuring backdoors in both hardware and software and the EU forcibly prosecuting for it. Software and hardware developers can't win in that situation.

They make two skus(they already do this in many occasions) one for china/US, one for EU. Like how if you set French on windows XP everything is decrypted. Probably will have to establish intent, that might make the law hard to enforce. If it was an oversite, whatever, if it was sold to a government or used for data collection, then a fine.

...Yeah, you clearly have no understanding of how the EU operates. So far the EU as a governing entity has brought nothing but strife to that entire continent in so many forms I can't find the time to list a fraction of them all. If you think this topic has any merit regarding the EU's intent to protect its citizens shows how deluded the general populace has become.

+1....this is a political feel good proposal to keep the public happy. The alphabet agencies, in at least the 5 eyes countries, will not care what laws any of them enact about tech and will make sure they leave no traces to have to deal with any repercussions, as they do now. So many people are moving to encryption and vpn's etc... making it harder and harder for them to get the info they need in a timely manner. Maybe they hope this will loosen peoples security mindedness and drop there guard some to make there lives easier.
