Electronic Arts, one of the game publishing companies decided to release a state of the art AAA games, today revealed an update to DICE's Frostbite engine.

DICE's Frostbite engine is powering many of today's AAA titles such as Battlefield V, Anthem and Star Wars Battlefront. Today it got a big update. EA released new capabilities to render the hair of in-game characters with almost real-life realism. This is pretty impressive considering that hair is very difficult to model artificially. Being one of the most interesting topics for game developers, good hair animations are extremely important to achieving the lifelike look newer AAA titles are targeting.

It really looks good. The hair moves and bounces as expected and reacts when the head turns. A lot of games have used short hair because long hair like this is so hard to render and have look realistic.

You're right!  If they kept the original hit detection in BFV and let the high pingers whine, we'd all be fine.

Is that real-time hardware hair tracing, or "just" real-time software-utilizing-hardware hair tracing?

I thought hair physics was something that people stopped caring about in 2015.

Looks pretty realistic, but not sure I'd care while gaming.

Ok so this gave me a performance hit to say the least.  I think on average a 20-30 FPS decrease.

Also, I think I'm officially CPU bottlenecked as I can't run BFV @ 1440p 144hz in Ultra settings because I get these horrid spikes.  I've been testing different settings on and off for quite some time now and my sweet spot USED to be able to run on High Settings with RT on Low.  Now after this patch, my system can't handle it so I'm forced to game on Medium with RT Low now and here I thought my 5930K 6-core CPU would be enough with a $1000 GPU.  Boy was I wrong...

If that silly i9 over 9000 CPU or w/e had more than 16 PCIe lanes ffs, I'd be all over it but I can't and have to wait to sell my rotten kidneys for a HEDT.

I think in open world games it will be very important that we see longer hair moving naturally. It makes the world feel more real and it's small details that make a city feel alive.

Good visuals don't make a good game. Take a look at Minecraft for instance. Minecraft is the epitome of "open world" and doesn't use anything fancy to make it a great game.
