I can get an i7-8700k and an ASUS ROG Maximus X Hero mobo for just under $550 (new of course). Does that sound worth doing? Seems like it's going to be a long time before anything better comes out of Intel. I could use the additional cores, I have photoshop and other programs that would utilize it.

It really depends on the source. The link above to Amazon is worth spending a little bit more since Amazon has a good return policy. Other places can have bad return policies.

bdary That price is a bit under what you would pay if you bought them seperatley from Amazon or Newegg. So it does sound like a decent price.
+1 ... $550 looks like a pretty good deal

Sounds like a good price. I mean it did before but sometimes the source has to be questioned. Now knowing it's Amazon it becomes easy to say it's a good deal since they take care of customers.

Maybe. I was considering upgrading my Mrs' mini-ITX desktop to an ASUS ROG Strix Z270-i with that i7-7700 (she has an i7-4790k and EVGA Z97 Stinger atm). You reminded me I have a brand new CLC280 to sell as well.

I just did a mock checkout at Microcenter in Queens. Same exact price for the mobo and cpu. CPU on sale for $299 and the mobo is $279.

I purchased btw. The 8700k definitely runs hotter than the 7700k, even without an o/c on it... however photoshop, video editing and a few others are very noticeably faster with the 6 cores. The Maximus X feels almost identical to the Maximus IX. So far so good, I'll try an o/c on it soon and see how the temperatures look. The 7700k I was able to o/c to 5GHz leaving everything on auto, which I thought was impressive. If the 8700k can do that, I'll be even more impressed, although I have a feeling the temps are going to be a concern at that o/c.

So overclocked to 5GHz no problems. CPU voltage at 1.328V which isn't too bad really, although the 7700k ran 5GHz at lower voltage than that (around 1.28V I think). RAM was on auto settings and was running at 2133MHz, but when I pushed it up to spec 3000MHz I couldn't boot, then I realized the mobo for whatever reason was keeping the RAM voltage at 1.184V.. once I set that to spec 1.35V and timings at spec 15-17-17-35 everything was fine. Ran it under load using AIDA64 stress testing - the 8700k runs hotter than the 7700k for sure, but still acceptable levels. The CPU temp readout peaked at 60C, although all the individual core readings were peaking at 69C and occasionally flicking to 70C then back to 69C. No throttling. The 7700k was running around 7-10C lower under load. GPU running at 2GHz without adding any voltage, and staying around 50C on load. The EVGA Hybrid cooler for the Titan X (Pascal) is amazing. All in all pretty good. Worth the money? ..probably not for most people, but I paid for it entirely with Amazon Prime Rewards points so it didn't cost me a cent up front, so in that case, yes, worth it since it was effectively free. ;)

The itch must be scratched... Maybe this will help; Fire Strike 24,628 (just ran it a few minutes ago) :p
