Does Precision X1 need to be running to benefit from fan curves and temp throttling?

I've just installed my 3080 FTW Gaming and been testing it out while running the Precision X1 overlay to monitor temperatures and framerates. I can tell that the system is throttling the card to keep the temp at the 80C target threshold.
(This doesn't particularly surprise me: I've got a giant cpu cooler and this 3080 all crammed into an mATX case. Probably have airflow issues. Not the point of this post.)

What I'm wondering is: does P.X1 need to be running in order for the card to throttle at that temperature target? If I were to shut down P.X1, should I expect the temperature to exceed that threshold?
My concern is that I know the gpu is running hot, and I'd like it to continue to throttle if it needs to, but I'd rather not have to run P.X1 in the background for that to happen. I'm not overclocking and don't plan to, so that's a non-concern.
I just want to make sure I'm not gonna melt my system here.

In my use only setting a constant fan speed (no curve) is saved. I think this is the only setting that persists after x1 is closed.
all throttling etc is done at driver level and not impacted by px1 running.
I would set a constant speed that sounds good to you and check again for temps.

Px1 needs to be open for custom fan curves to be applied. Overclocks, temp targets, and static set fans will stay applied when px1 is closed.
