Yes you read that title of this thread right. Well according to the World Health Organization, it wants to declare a "Gaming Disorder" as a real mental condition.  Well at least earlier this year, a group of 28 scholars wrote a scathing open letter criticizing WHO's proposal, citing a lack of scientific support.

This reminds me of the documentary I watched below for video game addiction in China.

The systematic labeling of everything as a disorder is just a part of the overarching intent to table flip society on it's head. Personal responsibility is no longer yours, when it can be diagnosed away. That diagnosis can be used in a legal manner to justify any number of idiotic premises. Progressive academics do not like the society they live in and are picking at the seams to unravel everything in an effort to re-imagine the world in their own screwed up dystopian image. If they're not happy, you're not allowed to be happy either.

Tell me about it, my main and only game is still BF4.
Yes I buy the latest titles but they never hold my interest.
The sad part is BF4 is still all kinds of messed up.

Then before you know it, you are flagged for a mental disorder and if you have a firearm hobby it's arbitrarily taken away because you like playing minesweeper too much.

I totally agree on the lack of personal responsibility anymore.

I lump it all into "computer disorder" or "electricity bill overdose/spare time deficiency"

I do wonder what it means by a disorder anyway, I mean, I know games can be addictive, and you can get hooked on them, same as a zillion other things, but what is the point of labeling it a disorder instead of an addiction?

I don't think that labeling something as a disorder means it's impossible to have even the slightest effect on the problem, nor that not having a disorder means fixing a problem is as easy as flipping a switch and the whole thing goes away.

As for responsibility, what's the difference between that and blame? to me it's more if it's first person verses if it's 2nd/3rd person, and less to do with justification. You take responsibility for yourself, you assign blame to others. If anything gets fixed however, may be another matter.

Then of course there's variant known as "Game Acquisition Syndrome", aka "GAS". This is manifest by the uncontrollable urge to continue to buy new games.

Scientists have now derived a precise mathematical to determine the proper number of computer games to own. It is equal to one more than you currently have.

Its stupid that they are calling it a "gaming disorder"

Those people all have mental illnesses and if video games didnt exist they would latch onto something else. Calling it a gaming disorder makes it seem like video games are the problem, when in reality they are just the medium of expressing a symptom.

True, it's really more of an addictive personality disorder. If not games, why not gambling or binge drinking or even intensive day-trading and I'm sure people have heard of the term "shopaholic" before. I guess the key though for people with addictive personalities would be to try a combination of toning down the behaviour as well as subverting your addiction towards something that's actually more beneficial, like chasing the rush from exercise and hiking or something like that.

There is a large amount of evidence that supports the theory that videogames themselves aren't necessarily addicting. When someone plays unhealthy amounts of videogames, it indicates a dissatisfaction somewhere else in life. Videogames don't need to be limited, people's health needs to be improved.
