DisplayPort 2.0 monitors have been delayed until late 2021 | OC3D News (overclock3d.net)

VESA revealed its DisplayPort 2.0 standard in 2019, promising users more bandwidth than HDMI 2.1 and support for resolutions like 8K and higher refresh rates using existing lower resolutions.

Initially, DisplayPort 2.0 was expected to release sometime in late 2020, and thus far the standard has been missing from CES 2021. In a statement to The Verge, VESA has confirmed that DisplayPort 2.1's implementation into monitors had been delayed by the COVID 19 pandemic, which prevented vital engineer meetups which allow multiple companies to work together to sort out any interoperability issues that their products possess. “In 2020 VESA had no PlugTests, which has slowed the deployment of DisplayPort 2.0,” confirmed VESA, confirming that they are "now planning our next PlugTest for this Spring in Taiwan, so we expect to get this process rolling again.”

DisplayPort 2.1 is now expected to appear in products later this year, though it will likely take longer for the standard to become more widely available. VESA needs to get graphics cards, monitors and other screen types to support DisplayPort 2.1, which will be a long process.

DisplayPort 2.0 will support a maximum bandwidth of 80Gbps and be usable through an updated DisplayPort connector and USB Type-C connectors (through the USB4 standard). Both USB4 and DisplayPort 2.0 are based on Intel's Thunderbolt 3 standard, giving both standards similar characteristics.

Below are some of the specifications of DisplayPort 2.0

Single-display resolutions:
  • - One 16K (15360 x 8460) display @ 60Hz and 30 bpp 4:4:4 HDR (with DSC)
  • - One 10K (10240 x 4320) display @ 60Hz and 24 bpp 4:4:4 (no compression)

Dual-display resolutions:
  • - Two 8K (7680 x 4320) displays @ 120Hz and 30 bpp 4:4:4 HDR (with DSC)
  • - Two 4K (3840 x 2160) displays @ 144Hz and 24 bpp 4:4:4 (no compression)

Triple-display resolutions:
  • - Three 10K (10240 x 4320) displays @ 60Hz and 30 bpp 4:4:4 HDR (with DSC)
  • - Three 4K (3840 x 2160) displays @ 90Hz and 30 bpp 4:4:4 HDR (no compression)

I am very fearful what prices will be for these new DP 2.0/2.1 monitors

Well that explains it, I was wondering where the DP 2.0 monitors were at.

The incumbent on my desk is a 4K panel and moving to 8K will be a tad expensive.

Hate to see how hard it will be to read an 8K panel vs the 4K i have now

Honestly Im okay with any delays display port gets. 99% of issues I have ever had with displays which weren't straight up in-compatible physical adapters were from using displayport. Any standard regarding displayport need all the time any and every engineer wants to weed out it's issues.

I still have nightmares of trying to run 4k early on where you would go through 4-5 displayport cables until you found one that wouldn't have the display buzzing or flicking to black screen every few seconds. How early on, even the best displayport cables that were over 3 foot long were a complete bag of cats as to whether it would work or not.

And 90% of the advice out there at the time...try a different cable. Lol.

I can only imagine the issues we will see at 16k with displayport.

Until more 8K monitors come to market there is not much pressure to change

Port specs are outpacing content to put on screen. Not going to see 16K 60hz 4:4:4 content on Netflix anytime this decade.

It also really depends on the industry you are in as to how much 8K will matter. Very little content exists that is 8K right now and while the 3900 can run some games at 8K it's not a great big list. Also the jump from 4K at a faster frame rate is better then 8K for gaming. If you did like 3D rendering for a movie that was going to be in theaters or are making a huge art piece for display of course an 8K monitor would be important but right now few people really have that kind of need for 8K monitors. That said by 2030 we probably will all be using 8K monitors with some people talking about how they are sticking with 4K to get the highest refresh possible. Some might even holdout on 1440p.

This is a good thing, the ports should always be more capable than the content.

Couldn't agree more! If the port is operating on the very edge of it's capabilities then it won't take much to push it out of tolerances. These forums are a good example, they have had no shortage of people with borderline working monitor cables that occasionally cause problems. A 4K resolution at a 120hz is the literal edge of the 1.4 specification. Now add HDR and increase it to 144hz and your only hope is DP 2.0 or higher.
