System:
Graphics Card: EVGA GeForce RTX 2080 Ti FTW3 Ultra Hybrid Gaming
NVIDIA Driver: 430.64
Motherboard: ASUS ROG Rampage VI Extreme Omega (latest 0602 BIOS)
OS: Windows 10 64-bit version 1809

Problem:
There's an issue with the display ports on my graphics card. Shutting down the computer causes the next boot not to turn the monitors back on when they're connected via Display Port. The monitors will eventually turn back on if Windows is loaded (by blindly using the keyboard at the BIOS/boot manager screens). If the monitor connection is changed from Display Port to HDMI then the problem goes away but HDMI is an inferior interface. Restarts don't have the problem, only shutdowns.

  • I've tried updating the motherboard BIOS
  • I've tried clearing the motherboard CMOS
  • I've tried disabling CSM and FastBoot in the motherboard BIOS (with Secure Boot enabled), suggested by this thread [Link removed]
  • I've tried the NVIDIA Graphics Firmware Update Tool for DisplayPort 1.3 and 1.4 Displays [Link removed] application but it gives the error "This update is not applicable to the graphics card in your PC." (seems it's only for older cards)
  • I've tried removing hidden monitors in the Device Manager, suggested by this thread [Link removed]

As a temporary workaround, if I connect the HDMI cable and DP cable at the same time to the same monitor and disable the HDMI monitor in the NVIDIA control panel then upon booting I can manually switch the monitor input to HDMI during the BIOS stage to see things and then switch it back to DP once that stage has finished.

How can I get the Display Ports to work properly after shutting down? I don't have another NVIDIA graphics card or DP-capable monitor available to swap out for testing.

How many screes are you using and are they all on DP or mix matched?

I don't know if it matters but the suggested DisplayPort cable are verion 1.4(a).
I use version 1.3 with no problems (1 monitor, AOC Agon 35", 3440x1440)

The monitors are ASUS ROG SWIFT PG279Q. I don't know the firmware version and it doesn't seem possible to update its firmware without sending it in. The Display Port cables are the ones that came with the monitors from ASUS, I'm not sure if they're certified but probably considering they come with a very high end monitor.

I think this might be a RTX series problem or displayport by itself (handshake?).
I've had the Aorus Xtreme 2080Ti and with my LG 34GK950F it did the same, black screen until Windows logon screen.

Oddly enough my MSI Lightning doesn't have this issue.

If you have just one connected does it turn off? Since it’s happening in Windows I am wondering if it’s the display setting switching inputs causing an issue.

What does the Monitor look like in Device manager ?   "Generic pnp monitor"

Did you install the Asus driver ?

Is the Monitor set to the DP input OR is it set to Auto ?

Have you tested with the Monitor set to 60 Hz ?

Strange. I know there was a microcode update for other cards for DP. One of the known issues was a black screen, no bios splash and booting to windows. It would be strange if the RTX cards have that issue. I have a 1080 ti FTW3 and it had this issue until I ran the update. It’s been fine since. I also have the 34GK950f. I’ll be curious to see when my kingpin 2080ti is delivered and installed

I just tried with only one monitor connected and it does still turn off.

Here's a screenshot of the NVIDIA CP, the screen that blacks out is set as Primary.

The issue occurred when it was Generic pnp monitor but I have since installed the ASUS PG279Q driver and the issue persists. The monitor is set specifically to DP, there's isn't an auto option. 60Hz gives the same result.

Just wanted to add that I own this same monitor.. had recieved a new one back from RMA a month ago or more now.. I had a evga 2080ti ftw3 ultra and tested out the new monitor and it worked fine and expected.

MB is a Asus z390 Extreme XI.

Though I cant guarantee that i tried booting with it as the only monitor. Prob just hooked it up while already booted up as a secondary screen. :/

Has been boxed up for resale every since.

You sure it's posting after the reboots?  Sounds like a computer memory issue (RAM).

Missed the part where you said it eventually shows.  Try disabling Fast Boot?  Wondering if it's turned on.  Might be going through everything without checking other components.

Yes, it always happens on shutdowns and never on reboots, it's reproducible every time. I've tried disabling Fast Boot.

Just received the KPE 2080ti yesterday and swapped from a 1080ti FTW3 and I’m not having this problem at all. I hope you find an answer soon.

Thanks. Do you think the graphics card is the cause? I'm not sure if it's the graphics card, motherboard, monitor, firmware/software, or some combination of any of these.

Re: Display Port doesn't work until after OS loads 2019/05/26 10:23:34 (permalink)
As an update, I've created a service ticket and EVGA support has had me try a few things but the display ports still don't turn on (until after an OS is loaded) if the computer was shutdown instead of restarted. I tried the graphics card/DP cable/monitor in another older computer and the issue didn't occur there. I also tried a different PSU.

It seems like it may be an incompatibility between this graphics card and motherboard. I created a thread on the ASUS ROG forums but wasn't able to get any responses after 6 days. Is there anything I can do to try to fix this?

Don't know if this has been mentioned.  In Windows go to the Power Options Control Panel.
From the Action Center its System>Power & Sleep>Additional Power Settings.

When that menu opens up, select the "Choose what the Power Buttons do" item.
Check to see if Fast Startup is one of the items listed and if it is and it is checked unchecked by using the Change settings that are unavailable link.

Fast startup causes some drivers not to be loaded until Windows is at the desktop.

Here is a step by step with some more information:

No, I had only tried disabling the BIOS Fast Boot option, not the Windows one. I just tried it though and it didn't work. Seemed promising though.

This issue occurs with both Windows and Linux.

Also, are you power settings set up to performance?  Might want to try that if you haven't.  If all else fails, it looks like a incompatibility issue as you said with your board it looks like unless others have the same combination with no issues.

The only time I've seen this issue was with a Lenovo laptop and the use of a docking station. When the laptop was placed on the dock it wouldnt post prior to the OS if Advanced graphics (Nvidia) were enabled. When I turned the feature off (Intel HD) I could see the bios. Doesn't really help to much here but maybe there's some graphics setting in the bios that can be adjusted.

Yes, the power settings are set to high performance. I will try ASUS support but I expect they'll point me back to EVGA.

I checked the BIOS for any graphics card settings but there doesn't seem to be any. The Advanced > System Agent (SA) Configuration\Graphics Configuration section doesn't have anything that's configurable.

Yep, sounds like Asus's CS.  One of the main reasons why I stay away from them like the plague, granted they make the best looking and most featured gear.

I've contacted ASUS support and EVGA support.

ASUS says that there's an incompatibility between the motherboard BIOS and the graphics card DP output. They "strongly advise" buying a card that's listed on their Qualified Vendors List [Link removed] (which only contains a single 2080 Ti model - an ASUS one that doesn't have enough display ports).

EVGA says it's an ASUS BIOS problem and they're not sure why ASUS is suggesting using a different graphics card. They say a lot of motherboard BIOSes have this issue with Display Ports including their own.

So, it looks like a problem that I can't fix.

What a bummer and sucks that Asus won't do the proper fix but force you to only buy their own GPU brand.  Sheisty......well now it's either replace the GPU with an Asus or throw the Asus board out for another MB mfger that is known to work, which they all should quite frankly.

Thanks for the Update

Real Long shot after the response from Asus but

I'd figure your new MB is running UEFI settings in BIOS

Trying running Legacy in BIOS - this may force you to reload your OS - not an issue if you have a spare drive

Check if Windows 10 is using UEFI or Legacy BIOS

Sounds like you should hook an HDMI as well as DP up for whenever you need to do the BIOS.  Not really that bad, but it is a nuisance.
