Blizzard will be adding DirectX 12 support to World of Warcraft on Windows 7 thanks to a bit of effort from Microsoft. You might be wondering how that is possible? Well after seeing massive performance gains in WoW when Blizzard released their DirectX 12 update for Windows 10 in late 2018, resulted in the company wanting to bring those performance improvements to gamers still holding out on Windows 7. To facilitate this, they began talking with Microsoft who after getting a great deal of feedback from Blizzard decided to act on it. To achieve this Microsoft decided to port the user mode D3D12 runtime to Windows 7, which will unblock developers, thereby allows them to take advantage of the latest improvements that the DirectX 12 API offers while still giving full support to customers on older operating systems.

However for best performance DX12 works best with Windows 10 as that operating system is optimized for it.

I wonder what this is going to break in Windows 7. I definitely wouldn’t want to be a day one download on it.

What performance gains? Only such thing you see is in the older content. Typically the newer content has dismal FPS due to all the fancier and newer graphical crud they like to add. Not to mention the game leans more towards the CPU side than the GPU side.

I read a couple articles about this and it is great. At the very least it shows that we, the enthusiasts, were right that there is nothing stopping win 7 from utilizing it other than MS artificial wall. It shows that the people do have the power and that if we do support one another on something that we truly want that we can get even a deaf and dumb corp like MS to capitulate to our desires. Obviously win 10 adoption rate, the real numbers, are so dismal that MS would actually cave and allow something like this is pretty fascinating.

BRADDD!!! DONT extinguish the hope for the little guys. Yes, your right in your context, but I think we can all appreciate and capitalize on this win in the long run for other things. Really, with MS especially, this is a big move. Now be nice Brad... or else im getting the wet noodle!

Microsoft couldn't even tie it's own shoes right, let alone do something customers actually want. Don't see deep meaning here. This is a cash transaction between two billionaire companies.

Glad all my systems still use Windows 7 Pro x64 UK + SP1 and yes I too will; pay for the 3 years extra after Win7 support expires, win10 Pro isn't something I'd ever want to uhm use...
But to be very honest I prefer Vulkan API it's a much better developed API it also has limitless SMP support, all todays gaming systems have multiple cores some even multiple  multicore CPU's, Vulkan takes use of limitless SMP support so even if you system has 8 cores / 16 threads or even 64 cores and 128 threads each core and thread will be used in the most efficient of ways.
DX12 only goes to 8 cores/16 threads max which is useless for us Dual & Quad CPU users.

Not only with games but with professional programs as well, it's the overall picture that counts most, Vulkan always worked fine with Windows 7, Linux Apple OS and other operating systems, it's more open that way thus better, that makes DX12 far too limited and useless,as it's not multi OS & Multi platform friendly, so due to that regard I never carded for it and I never missed it.
