Looks like a capacitor. If it indeed fell off your replacement card and the replacement card fails at some point, if EVGA notices that it is missing, they will probably consider that an indication of physical damage and say that the warranty is void.

Maybe.

Anyhow hole systems acting weird. If I try to overclock my ram I don't get a picture until after a cmos reset.

Don't know what the hell is going on here!

Well it didn't fall off of the one I RMA'd!

I kept both cards separate mostly.

This is how this happened. I replaced the slot cover from a two slot to a one slot grill. Thats the aluminum plate that holds the video ports. Anyhow lost a hex nut inside the card as the waterblock uses a hex nut to fasten the card to the aluminum slot and so I shook the card a couple times to get the nut to come out and out came that capacitor.

But just played  a game on the card for an hour without issue except to say only via hdmi port as the displayport didn't sync.

Thanks

Maybe that missing capacitor has something to do with the display port circuitry. Sorry for your frustration. Good luck!

Not sure where that cap came from but so far it hasn't affected the gpu from performing perfectly fine. About that displayport issue I discovered that by changing my monitor from the MSI MPG27CQ to a DELL 27 inch displayport monitor from like 7 years ago my monitor syncing issues went away! Before the 980 Ti Kingpin more than half the time would fail to post a picture on the screen via displayport. If I was lucky it would put out a picture at the Windows login screen. So I swapped monitors using my old Dell 60hz flat panel monitor and now the displayport fires up right away. I mean no problems getting into the bios setup page at post. So it makes me think that there is some sort of a compatibility issue with the newer displayport standards. Not even sure if it was what led to the monitor dying or not but it sure was weird that this all started as soon as I got my new (open box) monitor. Fwiw the MSI monitor is working just fine on an another machine with a newer gen video card. Weird.

while swapping monitors - did you swap the cable too?
Probably not a display but a cable issue?
Sounds like strange behaviour

No using the same cable after swap. In matter of fact had a second Accell cable I bought because I thought of that though the behavior persisted.

Evga just shipped me a new 980 Ti KPE Card. Not sure if I'm going to use it anymore considering I just bought a new card last week. Not only that SLI is a dead technology it seems. Almost non of the games I own are SLI enabled. Might let go of this card. Not sure.

SLI isn't dead. I can use sli in BFV, Resident Evil 2 (remake), & Metro Exodus.

Swap those card when the replacement shows up & give an update

I'm still curious where the little resistor came from - in post #30

Re: Dead 980 Ti Kingpin - Anyone know the warranty rules if you water cool? 2019/03/17 06:19:29 (permalink)
Well I got my 'new' replacement card friday. Almost sold it on EBay but decided to keep it and try to resurrect my previous build.
So I plugged it in the second pci-e slot where the 2nd card use to be with the card in its factory condition. Didn't bother to install
the water block until I could verify what I was dealing with. Anyhow lo n behold at first boot the card held up or stalled up Windows
from loading. After a reboot was able to get into Windows but the card was MIA. Device manager could not even detect it and it
was completely missing!

So I plugged it into another machine and it 3 out 4 times the system failed to load past the initial post logo screen. Had to do a cmos
reset a few times over.  When the system did get into Windows half the time Windows would lockup at the loading wheel part the
other half of the time the card was listed as 'Basic display adapter'. So I ran DDU and was able to finally to get the card recognized
but it was a pain. Was up till 2 AM in the morning!

At least I was able to verify it was a 80.6 Asic card better than what I had before but not sure if I should keep it or send it back?

Going to try to install it in my rig one more time and see what happens.

Thanks.

If DDU got everything running right I'd just keep it.

Re: Dead 980 Ti Kingpin - Anyone know the warranty rules if you water cool? 2019/03/17 14:16:29 (permalink)
Yeah It seems to be working now. I used an gpu to test the slot to make sure my pcie slot was functional. This spare tester gpu is missing its gop uefi driver being kind of old. So the motherboard auto turned on legacy mode. I think that helped though this time used ddu to clean the drivers up. After that installed the new 980 ti in the second slot and it was recognized. I even analyzed the gop version which was 2000C vs the newer 20011 version which was patched with displayport issue fixes. So i flashed the primary rom i had onto the newer card and turned on uefi mod without issue. Interestingly enough at the the same frequency the voltage is running like 25 mv lower at 1.175 volts vs 1.20 volts on my other card but man nothing like watercooling to get low temps! Haven benchmark my primary card thats watercooled is like 30 degrees while the new card via air cooling is like 72 degrees! If only those temps really mattered in overclocking maxell!!

Was installing my 'working' 2nd 980 ti KPE when this fell off of the card from somewhere:

Card still seems like its functional. Looks like a resistor.

Should I be worried?

Thanks

Ceramic capacitor, should be tested and solder back if work or replace with other one.
But there is a chance to EVGA notice solder if inspect careful. If he made problem card should work after soldering with good capacitor.

I would agree that SLI isn't dead but it's clearly intended for more of 4K capable systems now since not even the 2070 has support for SLI. As for when upgrading a card like this I kind of wonder if being stepped up would be better then SLI though.

Well that capacitor fell off of the second card and not the one that went bad that I sent back to EVGA under RMA. Fwiw even with a missing capacitor the card is still functioning and as these cards are EOL I am not worried.

As far as SLI goes its not that its dead.. its just only supported like out of 1 of 5 titles. None of the recent games that have come out support it such as the Division 2. No support as of yet. Nor with Metro. Vulkan games don't support it either.

So only a few like Fallout 4 and Skyrim old titles support it and it makes me question why I should have even bothered get the second card going. Should have sold it.

Got a 2080 in another rig I'm playing with and its a 60-70 fps average deal with maxed out settings and 1440p  in Exodus Metro. Should have gotten a 2080ti but the cost of the card was out of control. Hoping I can overclock it a bit.

Anyhow SLI doesn't pay off that much anymore. Hopefully they'll add more sli support in future and I'll get another 2080 in a year if prices come down.

Doesn't seem worth it though.

I must have the worst luck. My replacement 980 TI went up in smoke while playing a game!
