So my system is quite old. I think I built it back in 2011. It is a water cooled i5 2300k running at 4.2 Ghz.
My graphics card is a 1080 SC.

My question is will I see a performance increase that will merit the cost of the upgrade if I ditched my current MB and i5 for a new MB with i7 7700k ?  I plan on water cooling it as well with one of the systems that are already assembled like Corsair or Thermaltake.

Also is the 7700k overkill and perhaps there is a better choice that might yield better bang for buck performance ?

yes, not only from the cpu but in all the other tech on newer board like m.2, usb 3.1 etc.. you might want to hold just a bit for the new 6 core and z370 next month, word is the price will be just a bit more than the current 7700k but you get two more cores.

IMHO z270 and z370 offer very little in terms of performance over z170, you might consider getting a used z170 from someone upgrading, 6700k or 6600k.

I have always built my own. Over the years I just started upgrading less so gradually fell out of the loop and did not keep up on things. Now at the point to where my head spins when I try to figure out what to get.   This is the bundle Im considering.

Interesting Bundle! Keep in mind tho that the M.2 SSD listed here is only a slower Sata III interface, not an NVMe interface. IMO if I am going M.2 it must be a NVMe interface otherwise might as well buy a 2.5" Sata SSD

As long as your popular enough, you can get away with anything.

Thanks.. I did not even notice that. I assumed immediately because of the design it was the faster option over Sata SSD. I already have SSD to go into the new system so I just need to find something similar but without the M.2 SSD.

What will the PC be used for ?

Besides age of current build, what are you unhappy about ?

Specs of your current Rig and Monitor ?

Maybe just a SSD & EVGA 1080Ti (if current MB is PCIe X16 Gen2 or better) will give you much more performance - ?

Motherboard is Gigabyte Z68. I have an EVGA 1080 SC. 16 GB Ram. One SSD for OS and basic apps. Two SSD Striped for gaming installs. 1TB WD Black for storage.  Im running three 1920x1080 displays in surround and run any game that will support it  at  5760x1080.
Its mainly gaming. What I am unhappy with, just as example, GTA V, Rise of Flight, DCS , Arma 3 at 5760 x 1080 resolution, I have to drop down settings to keep it smooth.

Cool GTX is right. At the resolution you are running your 1080 is becoming the limiting factor. A 1080ti will give you a better performance increase than a CPU upgrade.
Also, your i5-2500K is a beast overclocker and you should be able to squeeze a bit more out of it to get a bit more performance. 4.2GHz on a 2500K is a "mild" overclock.
4.4GHz should be a no brainer and 4.5-4.6GHz should be doable with the right motherboard CPU silicon. Sandy Bridge is still a great architecture and still competitive against the current generation architectures.

Good info. I was not aware the 1080 was still the limiting factor.  What about 1080 SC SLI  since I already have one 1080 SC ? Since you can 3 monitor surround with one card shouldnt I still have that option in SLI and benefit performance wise from two cards ?

Apparently I have less than no brain since OCing to 4.4 is a no brainer ;)  because I cannot get mine past 4.2 Ghz.  My overclocking skills are poor to say the least. I am limited to a couple of easy settings in the bios. Im at a complete loss on memory timings, etc..

Another reason I was considering upgrading MB and CPU is I think Im at the end of the line with upgrade options with this socket 1155 MB. I think I got lucky with this one since I read a few posts where people could not upgrade to the last two generation EVGA cards because the bios of the MB was not clicking with the newer cards.  I also figure, and I may be wrong, that if I upgrade now to 7700k that I should be good for another 5 years or so in terms of the speed of the system and ability to upgrade performance with video card upgrades.

I was considering another 1080 SC and go SLI but after reading some reviews and comparing performance it looks like it might be best to just go 1080 TI.
