Extreme Tech:  "Ever since Ampere’s launch in September 2020, there’ve been questions about how much of the shortage was driven by semiconductors and how much was driven by cryptocurrency demand. Reports over the last 10 months have pointed to various additional causes, including low yields at Samsung, GDDR6 shortages, and ABF (Ajinomoto Build-up Film) shortages. New work from Jon Peddie Research has filled in some blanks on how much cryptocurrency has contributed.
According to JPR, component prices for GPUs have increased by as much as 70 percent. I’m perfectly willing to believe that board manufacturers have boosted their own prices to compensate for that, but the current GPU market remains ludicrously inflated. Component prices may be up 70 percent, but GPU prices have been up 2.5x – 4x.

JPR estimates that miners bought 700,000 midrange and high-end GPUs in Q1 2021, accounting for about 25 percent of the AIB market and roughly half a billion dollars in cash. None of that revenue flows to Nvidia or AMD; it’s all being captured by the channel partners. JPR notes that electricity prices in Mongolia are around 4.5 cents per kW, explaining how these farms remain profitable (and why it’s impossible to compete with them if you have to pay residential rates for electricity).

We don’t know how much of the market cryptocurrency mining ate during Q2 2021, but eating 25 percent of the available market is more than enough to cause a supply shortage. It would also explain why manufacturers haven’t been able to make up for the shortfall. Boosting production by that much isn’t just a matter of running the line a few extra hours that week, and we know there have been supply shortages throughout the industry. That’s only going to exacerbate the problem.

Hopefully, the cryptocurrency market cools off before too long and the GPU market returns to something like normal pricing. It isn’t clear yet if gamers can expect any relief in Q3 – Q4, or if we’ll have to wait until 2022."

I think we may have to wait longer than most people anticipated before the GPU situation returns to "normal."

im pretty sure nVidia went home happy counting all that cash, and then there is this stupid 3080Ti cash grab (originally they intended to sell $999, and then increased to $1199, oh ya wtg nVidia)

i hope AMD doesn't do this any time soon

Some places more than others.  In his neighborhood, maybe.   In some places it is very rare due to cost and income, location, lack of sunlight due to latitude, lack of sunlight due to weather, dense wooded areas causing shading, too much heat causing inefficiency, etcetera.  Some people simply can't afford to even spend the time or money considering it.  For other people, their life is comfortable enough that they have no problem installing solar.  I certainly wouldn't say that it is a normalized common thing in the United States.  Only normalized in areas.

You're upset that only 25% of video cards went to miners? I think that's pretty low.

The other amount I’m supposing is the regular buyers and scammers. But that percentage inflection in the supply can have a considerable effect.

You do know gamers mine too, right? If some were as smart as they think they are, their video card could pay for itself.

What i mean is the whole situation stinks of price fixing like they got caught doing with dram. If anyone thinks its not being done for every other component, then you are just fooling yourself. Ill just leave it at that.

My question is how did this 25% Get there video cards? I read something about channel Partners?, or did they also buy there from scalpers? Even a scalped video card will pay for it self in a few months.

I think the demand for GPUs was much higher this time around as folks stayed home during lockdown and built or purchased prebuilt PCs with these GPUs in them so on top of miners, scalpers and of course your gamer, the demand was astronomical this time around.

trust me even if crypto dies, shortages and scalpers would still be happening, too much request, it will take years

But, without crypto the big difference is gamers would not be paying scalper prices.
The major reason gamers pay the scalpers is so they can use the card (of course) *and* mine crypto to offset the scalper price.

25% to Miners 73% to Scalpers and 2% to actual consumers.
