Figured I may as well do something with some of the left over parts I have collecting dust on a shelf so I decided to repurpose my previous case in another PC for the den. Nothing really snazzy, just a few RGB fans for that extra "bling" and a Wraith Prism RGB cooler. The card is a Radeon RX 5700 flashed to an XT and power play table modded for 75% more TDP. I got this just wanting to have something to tinker with after seeing the mods and unlocks you are able to do with the vanilla RX 5700. I have it running at 2Ghz core and 15Ghz memory on the crappy stock cooler. Thinking about putting a better aftermarket cooler on it but then that would defeat the purpose of me buying the "cheaper" 5700 so I'm probably just going to roll with what I got as temps are surprisingly not too bad at about 75C edge and 90C junction on the 5700. Yes the fan is loud when it's put under load as it ramps up in VR but with headphones on I can't hear anything anyway so I don't really care Specs: Ryzen 5 2600 4Ghz ASUS ROG Strix B450i Radeon RX 5700 flashed to XT R.I.P. Gigabyte RTX 2070 16GB Team Group 3600Mhz @14-14-14-34 1T EVGA G3 750w SuperNova Oculus Rift CV1 Little rig plays everything in VR just as well as my main PC with way more firepower. Bonus is now I don't have to worry about clearing any furniture out of my office when I want to go ham in VR since there is only this PC and a couch behind me in the den. I can finally play around with a bigger room scale as I have about a 12' x 12' area to move around in now....and wow what a difference it makes for immersion. I can't believe I've been missing out on it for so long in my smaller 7' x 5' play area in the office. BRING ME HALF LIFE ALYX!!!!! R.I.P. RX 5700 Replacement RTX 2070

Nice! I saw those RX 5700's go on sale for 279 a few times... I nearly bought one. Awesome VR Set-up. I've never really messed with the VR stuff very much... I could with my area, I have 13.5' x 13' to work with.

Really nice setup for VR. Always wanted to get myself a headset but haven't. Hopefully Half Life coming to VR will bring a new generation of hardware that I might jump into.

If you’re at all interested I’d say take the leap. The Rift S is on sale now for $350. VR is really a lot of fun and the immersion of actually being “in the game” is amazing. Reaching out to aim, or having to physically reload your weapon with a new mag is awesome. The sheer power trip you get when playing a game like Asguard’s Wrath hurling lightning bolts and swinging a giant claymore is really unbeatable. Swinging a lightsaber around deflecting blaster shots or dueling Darth Vader is nothing short of mesmerizing. As for how efficient is the Rift is I’m not sure it’s that as much as it really doesn’t take that beefy of a card to run VR. My nephew is able run his Rift just fine off of his GTX 1660. Having said that however this RX 5700 when unlocked and overclocked is on par with a RTX 2070 Super so it‘s not exactly a slouch apsese Only a real life villain would sit behind such desk. :P It must weigh a ton!
Finally! Someone gets it! Lol and yes this thing is solid mahogany and weighs north of 250lbs lol. @Hoggle, what I said to Rain I repeat to you. It’s really worth it. edit Restored by Cool GTX from Filter

Well it seems heavily overclocking and voltage modding wasn't such a good idea on the crappy stock cooler of this RX 5700.....Who would have guessed? Anyway she's dead, it started crashing and misbehaving so I backed off on the clock and voltages but the damage was done. It heavily artifacts and is not stable anymore. So while I order a replacement (this time I'm gonna get one with a beefy cooler from an AIB) I tossed a RTX 2070 in there for the time being so I could continue to play Stormlands.

I blame AMD The RX 5700 is so easily modded and tweaked it's almost as if they intended it. The card responds and scales so well with voltage and clocks it's almost criminal to not do it lol. You can have the performance of a RTX 2070 Super for $200 less if you tinker with it for a few mins Though lesson learned, I need one with a beefy cooler. I actually just grabbed this however https://www.amazon.com/XFX-1905MHz-Express-Graphics-Rx-57XT8OFF6/dp/B07WRYC3MT/ref=sr_1_15?keywords=rx+5700&qid=1575738907&sr=8-15 I was going to get a Power Color Red Dragon for $349 but for $20 more just get the full XT? No-brainer. $369 is the lowest I've seen the XT go for

It seemed like that RX 5700 burned out pretty quick. I couldn't overclock mine very much at all and my RX 5700XT Red Dragon was pretty decent on the cooling. What about a GTX 1080Ti? Looks like the Radeon VII is going for $530 brand new right now. Not sure if you play games that require a lot of VRAM usage or not, but that might be a good option if the XT you got doesn't pan out.

Well yes it did die rather an untimely death and it would probably lasted for a while longer had I not tried to lean on it a little more. I tried the 100% TDP power play mod (yes I know terrible idea lol) and pushed clocks and voltage a bit higher. I had it at 2100Mhz core and 15.5Ghz memory for a few benchmarks. You know? Just trying to see what it could do and what it could take. After the 3rd pass at fire strike ultra it started artifacting and crashed at 2150Mhz with I think 1.33v or around there on the core. I’m not mad, I did way more to it than the card was ever intended or designed to do and stupidly I was running it on the stock cooler with only 100% fan speed as my defense. Had I just left it with the 75% TDP and 2Ghz core it probably would have gone on for quite a while. But curiosity killed the cat (or in this case the card ) i couldn’t just leave well enough alone. Oh if I wanted more firepower, I have another RTX 2080 Ti I could have put in there but I dunno, I kinda liked the idea of an all AMD rig lol. I like the RX 5700 series and this is a good excuse to play with an XT model so.....

RainStryke That's a pretty good overclock. Hopefully this new XT holds up a little better. A second RTX 2080Ti, you gonna run SLI?
I tried SLI with it months ago and unsurprisingly support for it was spotty at best and often times not at all. So now the second 2080 Ti is on a shelf till I decide what I want to do with it. As for the RX 5700 XT it's out for delivery today so I'll probably have it installed tonight if I can sneak away and install it. Got some family things I gotta do tonight and tomorrow so I may not get around to it for a couple days. As for the overclock were you adjusting the voltage curve and using the power play table mods to tweak yours?

I really hope SLI makes a comeback at some point... would be nice if it wasn't dependent on the game developer to add support. On the RX 5700XT my overclocking wasn't anything advanced, I attempted to use Afterburner and moving any of the bars would cause instability. I also had it pretty much right at release where drivers were still very new... It was odd how the memory would show up on Afterburner though, it was showing the memory running at like 800MHz or something like that.

What Afterburner shows with AMD cards is the actual base clock of the memory. It has gotten a but murky over the years as I haven't kept my finger on the pulse but the "DDR" at this point is not really accurate as memory today is capable of transmitting data more than just 2 times per cycle. The GDDR5X on GTX 1080 and 1080Tis for example was really QDR in that it was able to transmit data 4 times per cycle at the top and bottom of the "tick" so to speak. GDDR6 takes it a step further and is able to transmit data 8 times per cycle at the top and bottom of the "tick". So the 875Mhz you see in Afterburner with an RX5700 is the actual base memory speed. So 875 cycles at 8 transmissions at the "top" = 7000 transmissions + 7000 transmissions at the "bottom" = 14000 transmissions per clock cycle...ie "14Ghz" Nvidia uses the same "14Ghz" memory but it shows in afterburner differently as 1/2 it's data cycles in clock speed (7000) when in reality the actual base clock of the memory is the same 875Mhz. At least I think that's right from what I remember.

I figured it was probably just the way Afterburner was displaying the clocks between the two brands. I did not know that, but it definitely makes sense. Thanks for that info!

T hose who abuse power, are nothing but scumbags! The challenge of power is how to use it and not abuse it. The abuse of power that seems to create the most unhappiness is when a person uses personal power to get ahead without regards to the welfare of others, people are obsessed with it. You can take a nice person and turn them into a slob, into an insane being, craving power, destroying anything that stands in their way. Affiliate Code: 3T15O1S07G
